Map Dimensions

Most of my maps are roughly 35x19.68 squares, because I had to cut the edge squares a bit to make the map fit into standard Full HD and 4K resolutions for TVs. It comes out to roughly 1" per square on a 40" TV. I call this the "standard" resolution. There's a couple exceptions here and there, but I mention their size when I post them.

For newer maps, I’ve been going with approximately 37 × 21 squares, which still keeps things very close to the same scale but tends to line up a little better with 43" TVs (which seem to be more common these days).

Square size is 55x55px (HD) or 110x110px (4K).

Here you can find map grid settings and dimensions for:

You can grab some of my free maps for tests: [4k] Hammerhead Cargo Train

1. Owlbear Rodeo

Simply set columns to 35 when you import the map:

You can also adjust the map on the scene by double-clicking on the map and choosing the "align image" option in the drop down menu that will appear:

2. Foundry

I already started foundry walls as .json files. To use them, first create an empty scene, then import the JSON file into it, then select the map file from your computer. For a visual guide, check out this video: https://youtu.be/M6fqjjlbXqY

I plan to add walls to older maps as well, but for now, you can use this .json file containing basic grid settings.

Here you can see the main settings that will work for both 4k and FullHD standard dimensions:

The important parts here are:

Grid Size - 110

Scene Dimensions - 3840 x 2160

Offset Background - Horizontal -7 and Vertical -19

3. Roll20

Roll20 doesn’t natively support animated maps, but you can enable this feature by using the VTT Enhancement Suite:

1) Install the VTT Enhancement Suite for your browser:

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/roll20-enhancement-suite/

Chrome\Userscript: https://justas-d.github.io/roll20-enhancement-suite/chrome.html

2) Ensure all your players install this addon as well, or they won't see the maps.

3) Upload a video you want to use in Roll20 to one of these platforms:

4) Go to Roll20 and paste the link into the Animated Background Setup -> Media URL (the orange film icon at the top of the Roll20 map area) Don't forget to check "Enabled" checkbox and click OK.

5) To align my maps with the Roll20 grid: Go to the "My Pages" tab, open Page Settings, and set the dimensions to 2450px in Width and 1378px in Height. The grid cells will automatically adjust to 35x19.68.

Done! You're breathtaking!

4. Tabletop Simulator

The method for using animated maps in Roll20 also applies to Tabletop Simulator. Simply use the direct URL as a card face on a custom card!

If you notice a mistake here or if you have already found out the parameters for other VTTs, it would be great if you could share them here for others to use!

Comments

Thank you for this.

Stephen Thompson

You mean VTT Enhancement Suite? Oh no :( I don't know if there's another option, please let me know if you find out!

Cybermaps

Hey so VTTS is gone now is there another work around or no?

Pillow Chan

Can confirm, it should be 55 for HD maps, the ones you have above are for 4K.

Charlie Eberspacher

I suppose so. Let me know how it works out!

Cybermaps

n00b question: Should we change the above Foundry settings to 1920 Width and 1080 Height; Grid Size: 55 for HD maps?

Richard J Russell

Thank you SO MUCH for this clarification! It helps me so much!

Pietu Ruuttunen

Thank you for the details!
