Action Button Bokunatsu Fukubukuro: Complete

I have posted the bonus content pertaining to "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" on Action Button Channel Two. You can find many (many) hours of content of mysterious provenance over in the "Fukubukuro" playlist, and kind of a full triple-A-video-game's-worth of more focused stuff in the "Get Bonus" playlist.

How I decided which videos went in which playlist, I can barely begin to explain to you. Heck, I can barely begin to begin to explain why in the first place I selected which videos I did select from my now bursting-full treasure trove truck trunk of bonus video nonsense (if you at-gunpoint made me choose three letters to engrave into this figurative chunk, right now I'd go with "OMT" -- "One Man's Trash"). Suffice it to say I have a LOT of footage of a LOT of video games, and there's me talking on top of pretty much all of it. Setting up my microphone has now fully become a multiply-performed part of my daily work flow. I no longer fully understand the audience of my utterances as either You, My Crowd or The Mind Within Myself. Do I speak to the game? To its erstwhile makers? To future historians? I cannot say. However I *can* talk, and I *do* talk--a LOT--in all these footages I today proffer to your on-a-whimsical playlisting.

A fair portion of my workday, these days, revolves around predicting questions people will ask and then answering before they can ask them. Eleven times out of twelve they ask them anyway, though that's nobody's actual fault. I can sense the question of "How does a video qualify as 'Get Bonus' instead of 'Fukubukuro'?" I've already tried to answer this question twice in these three paragraphs. Let's face the fact that I just don't know. I entered this Bonus Feature Creation Mindset from the angle of "Fukubukuro is for unedited, raw, big, weird stuff and Get Bonus is for more composed, behind-the-scenesy stuff", though today's Video Delivery Package stretches those definitions to the point where I have to just say I don't know.

Maybe you will find this amusing: since uploading the original SIXTY HOURS of Fukubukuro Content back in April, I have received an average of three messages per two weeks from Patreon backers who have only just discovered it. None of them seem angry that it took them so long to find, though some of them do come across as a little annoyed. A few of them express outright joy that they finally eureka-stumbled onto the playlist after previously only skimming the admittedly enormous and purposely overwrought Blog Post where I philosophized on the daunting nature of a task so mundane as "let's make 'Bonus Content' that feels 'right' for my 'personality'". I enjoy that a person can be a money-paying allegiance-pledged connoisseur of Action Button Reviews without frothing for exclusive trinkets. I love that most of The Most of you (as far as I can tell, anyway) don't care one way or the other about Bonus Content. And I sincerely enjoy seeing some of you discover the bonus content anyway, completely accidentally. Now that that's out of the way, let me respond to the One Guy who has sent me a dozen emails since the day he two months ago discovered the Fukubukuro after a year backing this endeavor, and was absolutely furious that I hadn't Linked It More Times in my introductory post, or that I hadn't made one follow-up post "per week" afterward announcing to people that the playlist was Still There, so as to "bump" the idea back up into the email inboxes of nonetheless-dedicated viewers who have LIVES and Adult Responsibilities, You Know. To that guy, I gotta say: you are, in fact, the core demographic of this content. The long path you took to discovery is ninety-nine percent of this whole thing. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. Also, hey, here's 100% more stuff. There'll be more later.

I will admit to having not fully considered the audience's experience with the Fukubukuro Content Concept when I first uploaded a load of videos. However, as reactions and comments rolled in, I realized it's probably best to flop down a big brick truck of this nonsense on a Monday morning--cater to the amply existent dual-monitor-having, work-at-home computer-programmer-type people in the crowd. Well, here it is on a Friday afternoon. I promise I had it all exported and uploaded last week. YouTube Content ID possesses that most rare and dangerous of personality combinations: meticulous AND spontaneous. It flags two or three barely audible scraps of music on the first upload, so I easily fix them for the second upload--when it decides to flag three more things, et cetera. Some of these files (hint: hilariously, the most massive of them) got flagged seven times for seven different songs. We do what we can. In egregious instances I've put titles on the screen to inform you that, yes, I know the expected piece of music is missing (for example, several old games' iconic opening theme songs). For the rest of them, I leave it up to your detective skills.

At any rate, we owe the delay between the publication of "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" and this cornucopic buffet of special features to a quiet, boring avalanche of such mudane bureaucracies. I can't be the only person who frequently typos "bureaucracy" "bureaucrazy".

However, this delay perhaps worked out for the best--it gave me plenty of time to think and reflect on "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi". A full month, in fact! So I'll spoil for you right now that one of the Fukubukuro videos contains a "post-review". It's a full forty-five-minute podcast-like uncut, one-take presentation in which I do my best to sprint through a list of every thought I've had about the review since posting it. Witness me thinking without the safety net of a ctrl+backspace keyboard shortcut, or even an unadorned backspace key.

I actually happened to record that little impromptu "post-review" exactly one year to the day after the release of "Action Button Reviews Cyberpunk 2077"--one month and one day to the day of the release of "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi", so it felt like a fun time to reflect on everything I've done this year. I did my best--as I do--to stay cagey about like 95% of what I've done this past year (wouldn't want to spoil anything coming up!), though even with just some Boku No Natsuyasumi-related reflections I think it's a decent watch. Probably a better little piece of "content" than this distinctly, persistently, insistently overwritten blogpost, anyway. Since spoilers are on the menu these past two paragraphs, I'll come right out with it: you can find that "post-review" at the very beginning of the very first video in the "Fukubukuro" playlist that uses the new thumbnail format (visible in example at the top of this very post).

Speaking of the new thumbnail format--I intend to use this for all Fukubukuro uploads coming in the future. I like it. It's got Dragon Quest, it's got a single Chinese letter. It's got a shade of pink that's as close as I personally can ever allow myself to wear to Chinese Wedding Dress Red (let's not forget I did work eight years at a Target). It's a thumbnail format perfectly formulated for me personally. Maybe the only element that could change is the "action button" logo--which is, by the way, Not A Logo. That is the "debranded" logo. The real one will arrive . . . any day now. Perhaps you will see it in the next video . . .

I recorded a couple other little "vlog"-like intros to some Fukubukuro videos, though I'll spoil that I recorded them all on the same day, after not shaving for over a month. I actually recorded one take of the presentation that finally became the "post-review" with that same horrendous camera angle and facial orientation. After Fukubukuro File #00000007 got its fourth copyright claim, I figured, you know what? Let's just sit down and record a new intro. So I did. Which means that I don't get to use this pair of paragraphs, which existed in the original draft of this Patreon post:

"My hair is bad. The lighting is bad. I need to shave. I took so long setting up the camera in a way that didn't make me feel like a freak that I wound up losing my source of bountiful natural light ("the sun"). Never send yourself to do someone else's job.
Should my vanity someday intersect with my elusive leisure, I can always record a new introduction with better lighting and hair and insert it seamlessly into this little playlist with barely a person noticing. What an acting challenge that would be--try to memorize every word as it naturally occurred, perform it like a dramatic monologue. See--that's putting even more work on it."

I did not memorize every word. I just started over. And I'll admit: I don't look much better, though I do look much better. I trimmed the beard--an action that enlightened me to the truth that a beard is just an "I haven't shaved" until the exact second you decide to trim it. If it weren't "A Beard", you wouldn't have thought twice about shaving it off completely. If it weren't a beard, why do you own a razor with a "beard trimmer" setting? Et cetera. So I find myself for the first time in my life with "a beard". He died doing what he loved: something he had never done before: growing a beard: et cetera.

LET'S WRAP THIS UP?

Well, I started at noon and gave myself until two pm to say what I needed to say here. It's now eleven fifty-six and I realize I needed to say nothing more than "New Stuff!" with a couple of links. Never send yourself to do someone else's job, et cetera. And you know what? Maybe this Fukubukuro stuff SHOULD be someone else's job. Maybe Alex Jaffe can handle it from now on. I'll record em and he can post em. I mean, there's a thumbnail template and everything. Wouldn't it be fun for that playlist to just gradually keep filling up with impenetrable serial-numbered videos of mostly identical thumbnails? I saw some people in the Action Button Goblin Bunker (discord.gg/actionbutton) discussing putting together some kind of a Google spreadsheet index of what happens where in which file. That is my kind of idea. If you all get it going, maybe I'll go in there and edit it a bit. No, I won't add any information--that's for you all to do, lol--though I will format it to make sure it's maximally easy to look at. That's one of my few actual redeeming Job Skills: I'm a Spreadsheet Optometrics Guy.

Well, as soon as I post this update--heck. I wanted to post this at two pm, though I now realize I have to put all the videos in the correct order in the appropriate playlists and de-private them, so it's going to miss that mark by a couple minutes.

ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS BOKU NO NATSUYASUMI WILL SOON BE BEHIND US

Uh. As soon as I post this, I will officially be done with "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi". I make a big deal out of talking about the exact second I am done with "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" in my post-review, though I realized the moment I began typing all this that I actually only NOW will be free of that video. I've said in previous posts here that I am working on the next six videos all at the same time. Some of you--and loudly!--doubted that. Though I hope that evident in the structure of the Boku no Natsuyasumi video you've gotten a hint of the scope of my work here. I was pleased to see some viewers going back and to the Cyberpunk 2077 video and commenting about ultra-specific foreshadowings to the Boku no Natsuyasumi video. I've no delusions of grandeur that I'm doing something great or powerful or important. If you want to think that, go right ahead! I'll choose to instead know that I am doing whatever I am doing meticulously, and that I can take satisfaction from knowing that so far only exactly six of the six hundred thousand viewers of "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" noticed the easter eggs that point deepest into the future of Action Button Reviews. That's the kind of percentage I like. I can also take satisfaction from saying that as of this moment, I am only working on the next *five* videos at the same time.

ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS BOKU NO NATSUYASUMI IS NOW BEHIND US

So, let's just call it right now: "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" is over. I don't even need to click "post" to know that. It's over now. I'm moving on to the next project--which I was already working way too much on until three AM. Well, I've now moved it up off the back burner and onto "Full Production". I feel the need to remind you that, as the Boku no Natsuyasumi video hopefully proves, my back burner *is* quite hot. And lordy, that front burner kills.

LET'S INTRODUCE THE CONTESTANTS

So maybe this is a good moment to comment on staffing.

Here at Action Button, my job title is "director". I define that title as "does a lot of everything". This contrasts with the title I give everyone else: "producer". I define "producer" as "does a little bit of everything". My Patreon is quite successful, though it does not afford me an HR department, an IT department, a marketing department, et cetera. I needed to frugally select my party of heroes. In carving out a verifiably Distinctive Style, these videos have for better or worse accumulated the baggage of logistical complexity. On-ramping any given person into this one-person enterprise always posed a drastic hurdle, so I had to choose my "producers" with care.

As a "producer", my longtime coworker and Action Button Cofounder Michael "Truck Heck" Kerwin--not nearly exhausted ENOUGH from his daily duties crafting the loudest video trucks possible--will assist in editing Action Button Reviews from this point on. Though Kerwin's job title at Action Button has usually been "programmer", I do not hesitate to say he's as much a "Game Designer" as I have ever been. When you, as I have, burn your way all the way out of triple-A studios and decide to eternally quest forth with a skeleton crew, you need good skeletons. I could have never "directed" any video games at all without a programmer who was also a game designer. So that's Kerwin. His job here at the Video Department of Action Button Entertainment will see him editing the videos. That's the part I genuinely *like* to do, myself, though there comes a time in a man's life where he's gotta say: let's let someone else do the fun part. That is also why I bought a Dyson vacuum cleaner today, after debating it for a couple years. *I* like vacuuming, though I don't think our current vacuum is as much fun for Mimsy as it could be. Et cetera. Uh. I see a similar mechanism at play with bringing in Kerwin. He is the Dyson vacuum of editing Action Button Reviews. If I had to give Kerwin a secondary, Shadow Job Title, it'd be "The Designer".

As a "producer", Christa Lee, owner of SoundRetro.co, game music composer, and video game console modification specialist, will similarly assist in editing videos. I figure, if she can replace the DVD drive in a Nintendo Wii, name more than six CDi games, *and* compose the entire soundtrack for one of the best (not-actually-Japanese) Japanese Role Playing Games of recent years, she can probably do this stupid thing I do all day better than I can. Christa helped invaluably with the Boku no Natsuyasumi review--capturing a LOT of clips of video games that I was too lazy to play myself. By now, readers of these posts and viewers of the Fukubukuro who have watched "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi" have a pretty good idea of just how many games I played to gather materials for those montages of "PlayStation Masterpieces", or "Too-Japanese" games. With today's Fukubukuro you'll get another large piece of that montage puzzle. Though quietly and burning-brightly behind the boisterosity of the Fukubukuro are the many toiling hours of un-commentaried, ultra-specific footage I begged of Christa Lee. As a person daily entrenched in up-to-the-elbowsedly engaging with the most persnickety aspects of what Star Trek would consider Ancient Technology, Christa Lee finds little unexpectable in the task of capturing well-played reference-quality video footage of pretty much any video game I personally can possibly think of (and I can think of a LOT). She'll be appearing on some streams--I may even give her The Keys to the Action Button Twitch channel at some point in the future--and she'll even be recording some Fukubukuros, in addition to--as implied in that job title of "producer"--a little bit of everything else that I myself do over here. Follow her on Twitter, where she bravely tweets good stuff during this dark era wherein I, for example, clutch everything greedily for myself. If I had to give Christa Lee a shadow job title beneath that purposely nebulous title of producer, I'd call her "The Connoisseur".

Lastly and probably not leastly (the "probably" is the most I can commit here, in an attempt at absolute fairness), we have Alex Jaffe. If you have followed my work for more than six minutes and one second, you probably know Alex Jaffe. He hosts a podcast I am often on, which I designed and everything.

As a "producer", Alex Jaffe will--well. He will have the extreme bad luck of having known me for more than ten years, and also the worse luck of living less than a half an hour's walk from me here in this nightmarish Too-Hot-For-Dark-Souls doubly named city of New York, New York. Alex Jaffe, in addition to editing videos and doing a little bit of everything like everyone else here does, will be assigned the most meticulous and terrible of tasks. Keeping spreadsheets, archiving livestreams, posting Fukubukuros, maintaining ongoing individual Premiere projects and logs of Every Single Video Game I Play With No Exceptions Ever Because I Am *LOOKING* For Something God Darn It And I Won't Know What It Is Until I've Found It, Jaffe. As a frequent list-maker and question-thinker-upper, as an unstoppable knower of DC Comics-related facts and figures, names and numbers, Alex Jaffe lands uniquely suited to conquer the granular demands of the typical Action Button Review development process. (By the way: it no longer feels pretentious at all, for me personally, to refer to these videos as "developed".) I've said before--and I'll say again--that the "magic", as it were, of an Action Button Review "happens in the log"--in that phase wherein I put my eyeballs on raw footage of the game under review, note patterns, pull out excerpts, craft tentative montages, and polish particular narrations. More eyeballs on more logs--if the logic follows--means more magic. So let's get Jaffe in there. If I had to give Jaffe a shadow job title underneath that title of "producer", it would be "The Collector".

In summary, I've chosen three people who I feel each better embody a little part of myself that I always wanted to refine and never found the time. The Designer, The Connoisseur, and The Collector. That's the triforce of "me". With these three powerful people cooperating seamlessly, I believe we can better make videos that represent the kinds of videos I want to make as "me". Which is a hypnotic roundabout way of saying I want to make videos With Other People and I feel the need to flowerily explain to you, the Fan Of "Me", why these people are Basically Me, Actually. I mean no arrogance in this: we're all of us basically each other, Jerry. Let's drill down on that. Let me just try to be funny about it for a couple paragraphs.

If you'd like to know how well this team works at making a finished, complete, beautiful video--well, so would I. So let me go ahead and post this real quick so I can find out as soon as possible. Look for this New Action Button in the next video! If we can post it before the end of the year, that'd feel amazing. Though I dare not make any estimates or promises aside from: we got good stuff coming.

ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS THE FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE: COMING SOON

Much as I prefer to keep my bonus content nebulous, un-advertised, and as mysterious as possible, I want to once again proclaim my plans to produce a "Director's Commentary" re-watch video for Action Button Reviews The Final Fantasy VII Remake. I have not watched that video since posting it, and I drastically look forward to watching it again for the purpose of this bonus feature. In my previous post I asked you to send me any questions you have about that particular review--I have received many, though please keep them coming. Hello At Action Button Dot Com, subject line "FFVIIR Q&A". Exact timestamps for the review are greatly appreciated. I talk a little bit more about this in the "post-review" for "action button reviews boku no natsuyasumi", which you can see as the first video using the new thumbnail format in the "Fukubukuro" playlist on Action Button Channel Two. Don't confuse the Fukubukuro playlist with the "Get Bonus" playlist, even though I can absolutely, bodily understand the confusion. Do you like how I reposted that link all the way here at the end of the post? I did that on purpose.

OH! I ALSO UPDATED THE STREAM ARCHIVE PLAYLIST!

Ah, heck, now the Fukubukuro and Get Bonus playlist links aren't in the last paragraph anymore. Someone's gonna miss them . . . You know. I've committed myself to never, ever advertising the existence of Action Button bonus features. If I did, though, I'd be able to say stuff like "I released Over One Hundred Hours Of Bonus Features So Far This Year . . . And There's More Where That Came From!!" I commit myself to not advertising This Thing enough, much less at all. Though if you wanted to tell your friends--sort of urban-legendarily--that I Released Over One Hundred Hours Of Bonus Features So Far This Year And Didn't Advertise It Anywhere . . . And There's More Coming! . . . you could go ahead and do that. I wouldn't stop you.

Well. That's all I got. Thank You.

lord. wait. what is this. lmao when i choose to bulk-update a bunch of videos to "unlisted" does a literal guy at youtube have to go into that clunky interface one by one and click the "visibility" dropdown? lol why is this taking like ten minutes

ah wait it's done. ok bye

UNLG: Ungrateful Nagging Loser Guy

lol

DandyProphet

Don't think I will, Mr. Pesty Wizard. I said it before: I think Tim Rogers makes good content, but he's also a con artist and people should know.

unlg

we get it, man. I genuinely don't understand why you are still paying to come here and cry tho. move on

Pesty Wizard

How the hell does Tim not have insurance on his five figure equipment he travels with??? Also the irony of a man asking for money while driving a rental Cadillac

TJ B

After Tim got robbed, he stated on his twitch stream: "I don't want to ask people for money, but if anybody wants to help set up something... I need a new camera, and I don't really have a whole lot of money cos I spend the money making this videos". What? A lowball estimate for Patreon contributions for the current video is sitting at 500k USD. Now the video needs extra money to be completed? Isn't 500k a pretty good sum of money to make a video game review? Doesn't the next monthly contribution (around 20k USD) kick in in about 5 days?

unlg

Just for people who don't watch the streams, Tim was the victim of a robbery. He had a laptop, a camera and a few other things stolen. This was just as he was about to shoot the last bit of the next videos. He described the situation as going to be causing a significant delay. He was also asking for more money to pay for a new camera, and there may be a post coming soon. Not gonna lie, that really sucks for Tim and I have empathy for a really crappy situation.

James

have you seen his videos? That sort of snarky comment/faux outrage followed by a awkward explanation is totally his style of humor. Personnally I think the guy is a perfectionist workaholic and has gotten himself into a negative feedback loop where he's obsessively trying to make it perfect, and because it's taken so long, he feels weird about it not coming out, so now he really feels like he has to make it "perfect". That said, I am just as annoyed that he hasn't released any new content since Boku. I lowered my donation to, like, $0.30 as kind of an protest. It probably costs patreon/tim more than $0.30 to process that $0.30, so either way, it's an obnoxiously low amount.

Don't know that I want to give Tim too much more money honestly--not that I regret giving him the money I have (I consider it a tax I'm paying for his old Canabalt review rewiring the neurons of my brain), but I mean, if he's actually working 80 hour work weeks to get the LA Noire video done and he still isn't any closer as far as anyone knows, then I kind of feel like I'm paying him to self harm, you know? I don't really want to support that kind of work "ethic" cause ultimately I feel like it's too harmful to the people who do it. Obviously if he's been lying this whole time and doesn't have any video in any progress at all, that's bad too--I do not believe that's the case though. Ideally, in this scenario you'd hope he's lying about the 80 hour work weeks but has been pounding away at a new video at a normal pace. But we don't know, we don't know. :(

Eri Henry Drury

Really enjoyed the demo. Will be getting the full game soon.

Blame Tim Rogers for the negative comments here. The reddit and discord are moderated like a North Korean news channel. Same when he streams. Never seen a creator shit on his followers so blatantly while some of them defend him. Stockholm syndrome.

Zach M

Ok lmao

unlg

Your evidence of guilt-tripping is that he lists his patreon on his YouTube profile (the most sensible place to put it) and that he USED to advertise it on his Twitter (a place he hasn't consistently posted on since before the bokunatsu review)? Get a hobby man. The wait would go a lot quicker for you if you did something with your time lmao

Connor Colledge

He does guilt trip followers. He's been doing it for years. And he has advertised his Patreon many times. It's the first link under his YouTube profile. He used to advertise it prominently on Twitter. He's making a lot of money already and doesn't need to do it as much probably. He just needs for you all to keep thinking he works all day every day on 8 videos at the time and you'll see something very soon. Whether you want to see it or not doesn't matter.

unlg

Yeah I commented in the past, if you’re disgruntled or dissatisfied with the output, just cancel your subscription and move on with your life?! The character assassination and “deep” analysis of Tim here is truly crazy. Saying he needs a boss and that he’s guilt tripping people which is just straight up not true lol but yeah he’s totally controlling us…

SteveBallins

It's very funny to me how these people seem to keep insisting that Tim is pressuring people to donate, despite the fact that the only time I think he ever brings up the Patreon in his reviews is in the post-review hang out sessions. That's 6 times since he's started on here lol. It's possible he mentioned it earlier in the FF7R review, my memory ain't too good, either way I'm not feeling too pressured!

Connor Colledge

People can make their own decisions regarding what they want to do with their money, including donating to Action Button. As a fan, I've never felt like donating to Tim was necessary. The fact he keeps the old blurb there about his hopes for the future should tell you nothing here is promised. But despite that, I personally just wanted to start supporting him anyway. And this is more than a year after Boku no Natsuyasumi with no new videos in sight, mind you. I like the videos and I don't like crunch culture. If that isn't worth it to anyone else, so be it.

DandyProphet

It's such a weird behavior. Tim wants to control everything his followers say. Probably fearing this character he is playing is far from bulletproof.

unlg

I posted about this on r/actionbutton and was permabanned. They also deleted a thread where others were criticizing him

TJ B

At this point, there's no other way. I think this may actually help him in the long run . Maybe one day he will decide to be honest and not guilt-trip his supporters.

unlg

Reporting him to Patreon may actually be a good way to get some sort of firm status update. For how organized he says he is, Tim clearly is not someone who excels with self determined deadlines and probably needs a boss/editor figure above him to help manage. His use of Twitter and questions from fans were probably good motivators to get season 1 done so he flounders by ignoring everyone and having discord moderators try to silence criticism for him.

TJ B

On the about section it reads: "I made six of them in 2020 and 2021. I'd like to make seven more between 2022 and 2023." I have reported the creator under "something in their Patreon profile or rewards > the creator is not being honest > they aren't creating anymore". I like Tim's content, but at this point he is just mocking and disrespecting the same people who are not only paying for the videos, but who are literally paying his rent. According to him, all he does is work on these videos, right?

unlg

KoF 2000 is a good game

Zach M

probably somewhere earlier in the replies to this post. about a year ago i recall something stating he was locked out of it somehow which is why he hasn't posted any updates since

TJ B

Where did he say he can't access his Patreon?

unlg

Tim proves yet again that he is an insecure narcissist surrounded by yes men. Why even bother having a chat and reading it if you can't stand honest criticism? Hell, not even criticism but people asking about the length of his work. Probably the same reason why he lied and said he's locked out of this Patreon which is his sole source of income. It's become quite clear that he needs a boss and boundaries not set on his own in order to produce works for others. Clearly he doesn't see his financial supporters as worthy. Cue his undyingly local fans who are incapable of questioning the man's process calling this a "hater post" or trolling it because they haven't started to see that Tim has basically been conning people his entire adult life into believing he's someone he's not and passing it off as true. For example, don't put a "resume" in half your videos that you're a CPA when there's no legal record of you ever holding a license either under your alias or real name.

TJ B

Not searching for peace. But thanks and you go right ahead.

unlg

Well good luck with that. I hope you find the peace you’re looking for and I’ll continue enjoying the reviews and bonus content that’s out there.

SteveBallins

Thanks, but no. I think he's a con artist and people should know.

unlg

Instead of coming in here and complaining constantly what if you just stopped caring and directed your energy into something else?

SteveBallins

For people saying Tim gives updates about the videos on twitch. Here's from his latest Twitch stream (1:24:57) "I usually don't talk about production here. I think the most stressful part of filming one of my videos, the most stressful part of filming one of my videos is making sure my hair looks the same, as it did during a previous filming session." He reads a user's comment "wasn't your last video like a year..." and reacts by saying: "Lord! I'm going to delete your comment. You do not understand how stuff works. Like, come on, come on man, come on! That's almost, what you just said, what you just said, got darn like... one more comment like that yous banned for life, no offence" and follows it with "I know you were joking, it's good content to blast people". Lovely guy. So, he basically won't post on Patreon at all. Your post will get deleted if you ask about the next release or delays on reddit. And he'll banned you from twitch if you comment on when was the last video published.

There's something to it for sure. Another telling sign, is how his fan base reacts to any form of criticism. He has manipulated his audience and played the victim for so long, that even a question about an update will be taken as an offense. Good that more people can see through it.

Someone in a reddit post I saw had some interesting analysis of Tim that gave me pause. Could Tim actually be lying about almost every personal detail about himself because he's just an insecure, self-obsessed and controlling manipulator who uses his writing talent to exploit people's trust? https://www.reddit.com/r/ActionButton/comments/1deal5l/comment/l8htw9y/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

1. This ^ is a bit too much. I get being a fan and adopting humor/vernacular/style by osmosis, but lordy. 2. Love the long form content, but I'm not really a "Twitch guy". I think I've patreon'd roughly ~$60 since the Boku video dropped. That being said, I think I'm going to pause my paid donations until I see further signs of life. I think I've "done my part" in funding the next project at the very least.

Trent Blackburn

HELLO. Very recent Action Button and Insert Credit fan. I watch Action Button Live on twitch every Friday and have watched all Action Button Reviews videos multiple times. I bought a refurbished Steelcase Leap on ebay after watching Action Button Reviews Cyberpunk 2077. One day, I'll also buy a Buzz Rickson's William Gibson Black L-2B Bomber Jacket because of that same video. That's a cool jacket. Listen, I trust Tim Rogers. He makes videos that I like. Interestingly, I drew a picture of Tim Rogers after seeing his face in the Thumbnail for the Boku No Natsuyasumi video before I knew who he was, what Action Button was, or what Boku No Natsuyasumi was. I just happened to be drawing whatever I was looking at that day. It wasn't until weeks later that I actually watched an Action Button Reviews video. Who knew the face of a stranger I drew by chance one day belonged to someone I now trust simply because of the Action Button videos he made? I also make videos on YouTube. My videos are, admittedly, not even close to the scope, genre, or quality of Action Button Reviews. But, Action Button Reviews are hugely inspirational to me. I hope I can make videos and art in the future that make others laugh the way Action Button Reviews make me laugh. And, make others feel something even close to the way Action Button Reviews Boku No Natsuyasumi makes me feel. I've never paid for a patreon before, but I figured I'd spend three bucks at least this once. After all, I've consumed more combined hours of Action Button entertainment than I spend playing most of the individual, full-price video games I've purchased. If you're reading this, whoever you may be, I want you to know that this is actually really funny for me to be commenting something so personal on this years-old patreon post. It's VERY not like me to share anything even slightly personal online. I don't know Tim Rogers, nor any of you patreon backers, and likely never will. But you(whoever may be reading this) now know a little bit more about me than most of my subscribers on YouTube. That's funny. Why, now, did I decide to get personal? Idk bro lol. Thought I'd go against the grain I guess. Already outside of my comfort zone spending money on patreon so why not go a bit further? Whatevs. I think I'll stay subscribed until I've given Action Button an amount of money at least the equivalent of a AAA video game's price. Also I'll buy Truck Heck when it comes out. That's what Action Button has earned from gaining my trust. Okay bye.

Jake Wartooth

anyone here play video games?

Zach M

He said the same thing about releasing multiple videos after the cyberpunk review. Never happened.

unlg

^ Truly can't tell if this is a joke or not.

Ok321letsjam

He's not deceiving though. He said multiple times that he's working on both season 2 and 3. He's not taking 2 years to make 1 video, he's making a lot of them at once, plus a huge amount of bonus content. It will all make sense once the videos start coming up. The only time he rests is to stream once a week. Sometimes he even sleeps, though we can't be certain of that.

Bruno Duarte

He did lie. Do you think that stating "I'd like to make seven more between 2022 and 2023.", making just 1 (and we are in mid 2024) without changing the text is just a miscalculation? Or hinting that he would release something at the end of 2022, and two years later there's still not even an update? That's not lying, that's?... a miscalculation? Or how he said he was working on multiple videos to be released after his cyberpunk review, only to release just one and then disappear for two years? Only to use the same tactic again "I'm working on 6 videos at the same time" yara yara. He could be honest and say he will take around two years per video - but he chooses to deceive his supporters.

unlg

The problem with this is that he didn’t lie. The type of videos that Tim produces requires an insane amount of hours, perhaps an unhealthy amount of hours. Let him cook bro.

Matt Pond

"I made six of them in 2020 and 2021. I'd like to make seven more between 2022 and 2023." It's not like people complain about videos taking time, it's about things like Tim stating clearly in the first paragraph of the about section on Patreon that he plans to make 7 videos and ends up making just 1. Isn't it fair to ask why would he lie about this? I don't bite the "bad estimation" thing, sorry. He's been doing that for years and still overestimates his output x7 - clearly not a rookie mistake at this stage.

unlg

Is someone else curious as to why a video that Tim said could be released by the end of 2022 has taken 16 more months to finalize? Was it just a bad estimation? Can an estimation be THAT bad, realistically speaking? I know videos take time, but 18 months and over 200k to make?

unlg

Tim really feels like he has an attitude problem in recent episodes of The Insert Credit Show. I don’t know if he’s burnt out or what but there’s be frequent times he’s said he doesn’t care about a question or outright said something brought up it’s stupid. It’s beyond his friendly derision of Brandon. He just seems over discussing the content in general. He seems really unhappy lately and it’s off putting

TJ B

Just lowered my monthly contribution to Tim and increased my contribution to Insert Credit by the same amount. Insert Credit is the only podcast that guarantees it will not give your money to Tim Rogers, and I appreciate that.

Death_Strandicoot

me when the 6 hour videos take time

Cam Lordi

Forget about taking a long time to create content... does anybody think it's alright to lie to your supporters? Something Tim has been doing for a really long time. Is there a point where people start to realize he created a cult of personality little by little? Just to get to a place where he doesn't need to update you all, or even tell you the truth, or pretend to care anymore? I'd take the time to go through all his previous updates, and show you how he's been lying over and over. But the damage is already done. We went from "hey Tim, take your time with the videos!" to "I'll gladly pay Tim $3/month to not have to work for Kotaku, if we get videos out of it, great! if not? that's fine too". Tim has suggested for people working on content creation, to "count your hours", in order to understand how long a particular job takes. Knowing this himself, he has said things like "in a little over a month", which ended up being 9 months. He said on Oct 2022 that after adding people to his team, uploading the next videos "before the end of the year" would be great. That was end of the year 2022. He also wants you to believe that he works on multiple videos at the same time (he used this tactic before). It's a perfect excuse, the supporters think they are getting a few videos at once... and yet that never happens. He also wants you to believe he works six days per week, 10 hours per day, on these videos, with a team! And he hasn't been able to produce a single video in (checks calendar)... yeah.

unlg

It's not just about taking his time, he has lied over and over. About having a few videos in the pipeline, about being almost done, about how he works "all day every day on these videos". Plus, ridiculing his supporters whenever he's asked about giving an update.

unlg

Cult of personality at its finest. Tim did a great job here.

unlg

The cult of personality has been crafted by Tim little by little. He knew what he was doing, and now he is reaping the rewards.

unlg

What a coincidence, he also stopped posting on twitter, even if he is liking tweets on a daily basis. Tim is a con artist, it has been said multiple times in different places. Try for example to comment anything like this on the reddit page. It'll get deleted instantly. The moderation is basically "talk about anything you want except how Tim takes money from supporters, lies and delivers nothing".

unlg

He has no problem accessing the money though.

Nicholas Hans

i prefer glib supreme

Zach M

The derision is the turning point for me. And the way he keeps openly stating that his persona is fake and “no one knows anything about the real me” or whatever. We need more sincerity in this world, not glib superiority.

Sam Perazzo

I hope my 3 bucks a month are going towards Truck Heck's development, cause that was what I was REALLY interested in (and I can think of a couple possible reasons why that might be taking a while lol)

Eri Henry Drury

That's not entirely true. Tim wouldn't be able to make his video reviews without the support of this Patreon. While each individual would be able to view the next video if they stopped contributing, if we all collectively ceased our contributions, there would be no next video. It would just be nice to have any idea of when that next video may be.

Death_Strandicoot

I'm done, mate. I've contributed for about three years, and I have to say, you more seem to hold your supporters in contempt rather than appreciation. I've watched the streams occasionally (I'm in the UK so only ever the recordings) and most of the time fan questions and statements are met with derision. I've kept this going almost as a wee bet: a few quid a month wagered against whether or not Tim will deign to bother posting. It's not even worth that now.

jdhathrisen

But you're not paying for the longform content. It's free. You're optionally donating to support Tim because you want to... At best, the only thing that you can actively be said to be paying for are the text posts on here. I do like those a lot, so I would actually appreciate occasional updates on here, but that's neither here nor there in terms of the video reviews.

TJ B

Others have said that Tim said he somehow can no longer access this Patreon, which begs the question of why since this is such a significant source of income.

TJ B

unedited weekly streams are a heck of a lot different from long form content. it's an entirely different product than what people pay for

TJ B

Patreon is, by definition, an optional thing: support if you want, don't if you don't. That being said: do people here watch/attend the streams? You know he streams on Twitch every Friday, right? I'm confused why that doesn't count as content...

Zack Brown

I try to be patient and understanding and kind, I really do, but this is absurd. Guy has been taking in at least 12k a month for 16 months without even a single word of an update. 200k USD. (Well, 192, minus whatever patreon's cut is. It's an estimate.) And he hasn't even bothered to take 10 minutes to write out the simplest possible update on here. It feels like a scam, and I for one am going to see what I can do to get some money back from patreon.

Rhaethyn

I only joined this patreon to see how annoyed other people are about having joined this patreon.

All g. Enjoy the videos when they come out! Thor is good, but theyre no tim. The dude hasnt has a day off in a year - not to romantasize crunch culture - but thats exciting. I don't doubt that he's working, but almost 18 months with no update (unless you deepdive through twitch streams) while receiving a few hundred grand is not good enough. He's on Instagram, if he can't get on this platform then stick something on there. If we're his patrons, I reckon we're fair enough to enquire "how's that product that we're paying you to make coming along?"

Ian

One of these days Action Button Dot Net will release a video? Who cares! I'm watching FF7 remake video now again for the fourth time and pretending he says "Rebirth" everytime he says "Remake". And buddy (Tim's voice), let me tell you, something, at all, would not be better than anything he (or I, Tim Rogers) probably COULD make in the future. In fact, anything he makes would only serve to deminish what he could possibly, hence forth (Tim's voice), be made again!

And again... there's nothing wrong with the time he takes to work on the videos. However there's a big difference in a tweet or message about the status of a project that is easy to find and watching a weekly live stream or subscribing to discord to maybe hear a brief mention of something. To deride those who would like a brief mention of some sort of update as to not be big enough fans to devote time out of their day to overhear him mention something is foolish. Also I don't believe Tim would tell people who just want an update to kill themselves, that doesn't seem like him, but I don't know what to say if Tim's ideal fan worthy of updates is one who has the kind of time to watch streams and chat in discord all the time as most people don't have the ability to be that committed. Being a patreon supporter I think says enough. I don't feel I should have to develop a parasocial relationship with Tim in order to get news.

TJ B

yeah a couple random things he's mentioned is that with his last two videos, they took around 24 months each, & that he's about 95% done with the upcoming one. understand why people are unhappy with lack of updates here, but it's different than a lot of people out there that just straight up disappear from web presence, never to be heard from again.

Andrew Noyes

i think tim is neat

Double Sunday

Finally tuned into one of Tim's Friday streams, and he said something that I think speaks to the frustration many Patreon supporters are expressing in these comments (and why that feeling's not likely to go away). Tim spoke of how he's made an effort to curate an online audience that engages with media and conversation on the internet in the same way he does, and that's why he does the weekly streams and maintains the Discord server; that's where his interests lie. Considering the year plus of silence on here, I take this to mean that writing Patreon updates does not fall into the realm of those interests, and folks getting upset and cancelling pledges is just a means separating the wheat from the chaff. He's got enough support from the people who like the space as-is to not make any accommodations otherwise. Can't say I'm pleased with that mentality, but at $1/mo, can't say I'm at my limit, either. Anyhow, he then said that anyone wanting a progress update should charter a plane and do a "Martha's Vineyard style 9/11", or something to that effect.

Stephen Mlinarcik

Eyy Tim, I like your stuff, but also I think you are a dumdum for not giving any updates for this long in any way, it’s not like you don’t have other platforms even if Patreon locked you out! I’ll pay when you give me content, bye for now

the dichotomy between me providing helpful info that people were looking for in a community i'm happy to be a part of with fans of the same Venn Diagram topics & then using the word "whinging," should trigger some tongue-in-cheek-levity alarms, amigo ~ 🤍

Andrew Noyes

Asking for a status update isn’t “whinging.” It it’s just looking for an update. It isn’t complaining, nor an accusation of taking money from others. It’s just asking for an update. Most people aren’t watching streams every Friday or on his discord. On Reddit someone said he acknowledged a comment someone sent him the other day, so it seems he has access again. It would just be nice to have some level of acknowledgment, I honestly don’t understand how anyone can constitute simple questions as whining or entitled

Curious now that its been 9 months of patronage with zero new videos how you are feeling?

Prettz

wow he heard you and obliged... a year before you even made the comment!

Prettz

hit that year mark months ago.. still radio silence

Prettz

Twitch streams, potentially one of the worst ways he could keep people updated. Are you still buying that he cant access this account?

Prettz

2 points. "It's not my or tims fault you don't like the medium he keeps in touch on lmao" it is 100% Tim's fault because this is a platform for such updates, it literally costs NOTHING to keep people updated outside of the occasional snarky comment in a random stream. and "It's cool we get to support tim to help him make these cool videos." what videos would those be? the ones from over a year ago?

Prettz

"thinking about spending his money, inaccurately labeled by his haters as other people's money". It was all "eat the rich" and calling all people with money scumbags... till he made a massive bag of cash from people then disappeared with it. Those "haters" are/where all fans who think his open contempt of his own audience is just a super strange move. I LOVE the mans content, but its ridiculous how much people throw themselves at defending somebody who clearly hates them. I am aware that this message is hyperbolic but coming back here every 3+ months to see nothing is incredibly frustrating. "just leave then" thats not the point, the point is that he should be treating his audience with more respect, ironically those defending him the most are the ones he should be treating better. It would take NOTHING to be more open about things, other than being snarky when he does his streams

Prettz

No you are right to be annoyed. People are so quick to jump at his defense, and sure you can always just stop supporting, but at the same time he puts ZERO effort into talking to his paying audience. People just scream that you should watch his streams for updates but that's a massive cop out. Some people don't like streams, why should people watch hours of his streaming to MAYBE get updates? This is literally a platform to communicate with your audience.

Prettz

"Whinging" man it's pretty sad that you have to wade through random streams to get updates as appose to... y'know the place that's designed for them

Prettz

For people still wondering/worrying, just watch his twitch stream the second week of december 2023 starting around minute 30 &... he updates. For anyone who is looking for an update from the twitch videos, last week, Tim spoke for a few mins on the small details mattering, including people speaking accurately about timings and length of things happening in his videos. So please remember, don't inaccurately depict how long something might have taken, or the length of something. There was also an extended monologue on electrolytes and hydration and how he was not giving health advice, he also responded to someone asking about the videos by saying "we don't do that here" during the q and a. Any actual/explicit information about an upcoming video isn't actually in his twitch content, perhaps it might be in the discord. He taught us about the word gauche and said he was thinking about spending his money, inaccurately labeled by his haters as other people's money, on a thread ripper, He also played Zelda

James

I trust his process, but it would quell some curious people if fans who do watch his streams and do discord and stuff if status update could be provided for others

TJ B

last thing he said was in his [maybe boku] video saying that to everyone asking, he's not abandoned patreon and if nothing else, would let everyone know if he does. he's still active on instagram so he's alive & well. i know there are expectations about creators but that seems to not be his bag, take it or leave it.

Andrew Noyes

I, too, would love if someone linked to any video of Tim discussing what's going on. I've been supporting Tim for over a year now and I must admit I am getting a little disappointed that nothing has been uploaded recently. Tim makes great content, and I do trust that he has been hard at work on the rest of action button season 2 (and I assume season 3), but it would sure be nice to see something come out sometime soon, even if it's just on youtube and not patreon.

Slim Mecha Smile

As someone who has literally no interest in watching twitch streams or discord, can someone please link which streams of his discuss 1) his lack of access to patreon/it being restored and 2) anything about progress on what he's working on. I'm also not gonna tell anyone how to do their job, but it'd be nice if a patron would update this thread with a link whenever Tim discusses new info reverent to us who are patiently waiting

you guys are boring with this. Almost no one is complaining about waiting, they are complaining about silence. It's pretty standard on patreon to give people at least occaisional updates -- it lets people know when to or not to get their hopes up, reassures them that you are receiving the money they are paying, and prevents weird speculation in patreon comment sections. It's a common sense good idea, and Tim knows this cuz he used to do it. You guys treating this like it is some loyalty test and I am a bad fan because I can't sift through 70 hours of streams and dischord posts to find the tiny nuggets where he apparently mentions what's going on here are being weird sychophants. There's no reason he couldn't update us on what is happening, and he should do it.

Grrrbah

People wait 3 years for their favorite marvel character to fart on-screen but can't wait half that time for a truly unique piece of media that will affect how they think/feel/interpret classic games. Sad!

Rick Rosen

We act like it's coal mine work, you act like donating isn't entirely optional. There's nothing else like Action Button Reviews on Youtube. For me, that's worth a couple bucks a month and a little patience. If that's not worth it to you, feel free to think so quietly. No one here needs you to tell us what to do with our money :D

Connor Colledge

@ Ok321letsjam You got a really weird hobby dude. For me it’s pretty simple, don’t want to be a part of the patreon? Then just don’t. I used to work as a video editor for a marketing company and yes while it’s not “working in a coal mine” the type of work he does is by NO means even close to easy. I think what Tim is doing is entirely unique not just because of his commitment to production standards, but also his attention to being as encompassing as possible within the context of both media subtext and his own personal history. His voice and style is truly something special, and it’s his type of work that I wish there was more of in general which is why I will gladly fund his work. I get a lot of joy watching the streams and I find the amount I contribute via patreon pretty minimal compared to what I get out of his content. If you don’t feel similarly that’s fine, you have nothing restricting you from withholding your support. But what I really don’t get is what compels someone to make it a hobby to spread negativity on a patreon.

Wolfgang

Its just my hobby now to post here. Why do you think he's working on new content? Cause he says he is? Seems like dude says a lot of things that aren't on the level. He said in his last post that the next vid was coming before the end of 2022! He says he can't log in to his patreon (though conveniently for him he can still get his payouts!) Point is I am not sure his word is worth much at this point. I don't think most peoples issue is even whether he's working on new stuff or not, it's the lack of updates or communication. Would be one thing if it was like a few weeks or a month but over a YEAR! Also lol @ "I hope he gets to rest" he (and a lot of you all) act like making these videos is akin to working in a coal mine. I'm not saying it's not work, it most definitely is but be serious most people get up and commute and thanklessly wage slave 40+ hours a week. Homeboy gets to fund his passion on his schedule. It's a luxury.

Ok321letsjam

I don't understand people that act like Tim isn't working on new content. Of course he is. Have you seen any of his videos? If anything, I hope he gets to rest. I appreciate learning on how to be patient for content that I know I will enjoy and will rewatch plenty of times.

Bruno Duarte

I am sorry but this drives me insane. In what world is someone making 15+k a month and not able to sign in to their patreon but still able to withdraw the money? I haven't heard or seen a credible explanation of how this could be possible. Surely he'd be able to reach out to Patreon to resolve the issue! Not signing in to or updating his patreon is 100% a choice he is making.

Ok321letsjam

he mentioned in a stream he was no longer whitelisted from parteon. but yeah he'll update on twitch when videos are incoming.

Zach M

1 year of silence on this patreon today🎉🎉🎉🎉 Tim’s been locked out if this patreon for months now, he still works on multiple videos every day, he will not give any indication on when the next video is ready until it’s about a week away from dropping, he streams every Friday on twitch, and he got another dog!

Judge Somersault

Tim has such tremendous contempt for his audience and it's sad/funny to watch the people who simp for him the hardest just absolutely bear hug his disdain for them. Classic narcissist behavior that you shit the hardest on the people that love you the most. And yup, people can pay or not pay him but if they do pay him and they want to voice their displeasure with what they're paying for, that is absolutely their right as much as it's Tim's to do whatever he feels like. If an employer was paying him they'd have performance expectations. This idea that he takes people's money but has 0 accountability is so bizarre. Also FWIW I tuned in to his stream and asked point blank (and politely) in the chat if he was gonna update his Patreon. He absolutely saw the comment and completely ignored it so for the people being like "just watch his stream" like GTFO. He also said if you paypal him 100 bucks he'll write your tinder bio. Homie talks a big game but he's a stone cold capitalist.

Ok321letsjam

Hey, I was on your side for a whole year. Deserve is a strong word, but if I was in his shoes, Id think the people supporting me deserve something. This silence for a year straight is 2023 political narc agenda. Seriously, if he said one word, even if it was negative, he'd buy 100s of us months of patience. At the very least, you should admit, the silence is rude. And people dont deserve rudeness

Zapp Matches

Everyone can choose to pay or not all on their own. At no point do you have a right to anything from this person. You do not "deserve" info, as nobody here owes you a single thing. Quality work takes time, and we have repeatedly seen that Tim takes the time required to produce the quality that he desires. You are supporting an artist, not purchasing a product.

darklordjames

I think "deserve" is a bit presumptuous, but I think he IS asking a lot for some people. (a lot being remaining backers with a complete lack of any updates) I think we all have our breaking point. I'm not at mine yet but I don't fault anyone who's pulled out due to a lack of updates/communication.

Patrick Eslinger

does anyone actually think that we dont deserve some kind of info? im here because i like to support creators i enjoy, but this is becoming more dirty as the weeks of silence continue

I feel like most of the "haters" aren't begrudgeing him the time, they are complaining about the lack of any communication. It's not even clear he can access these donations!! It is not hating to ask after a year of zero updates what the heck's going on. If I am just gifting money to patreon that Tim can't even get to, i do not want to do that, and Tim shouldn't let me. If he can access those funds, than it isn't unreasonable to want him to drop an update here. If he is for some unholy reason only able to stick those updates in the middle of a five hour twitch stream entitled only "just chatting," I don't think its crazy to want him to tell me WHICH stream such an update is buried in. I love Tim's work, I want more of it, I am ok with it taking the time he needs, but if he wants me to pay him every month, I need to know (at the VERY LEAST) that this money is still something he can access.

Grrrbah

Meaning he doesn't think about it? He spent like over an hour talking about his bomber jackets, t shirts, and indiana jones pants. He most definitely thinks hard about what he wears.

Ok321letsjam

I think his style is impetuous imo

Fastplant64

Hey buddy, just wanted to drop a comment here as an anonymous weirdo on the internet amongst your many other anonymous weirdo fans, to cut through these haters and say: You rule. You're making timeless art that truly matters. Art takes time and passion. Sometimes (often) it takes a very long time. I am certain you know this. Keep doing what you're doing, make sure you are taking care of your health, and we will still be here whenever your next work is ready.

Michael Ward

"bad style", what? lol

Zach M

Ok321letsjam

Hey action button, I just got really busy with some stuff recently so I was hoping you wouldn't mind holding off on posting any new videos until 2024? I should have some free time to set aside and watch then! thanks!

Bon Glover

we deserve something. but we cant forget that its 2023. and you know how 2023 feels about telling anybody anything of value

Zapp Matches

hit me bro

Mu Fayez

Honestly I just hope he's out there being healthy and living his best life.

Ryan E. Geiger

yeah buddy

Steve Beach

Yeah two years with one video with basically no explanation is pretty dropkick. I've read a lot of his stuff so he deserves a couple bucks but having issues without communicating that in a timely manner to who's funding you is not something you can defend. If he was funded in any other way he'd be on his arse a long time ago. XD

DJ Chodegasm

Lol I mean it's ok that it's "fair enough" by you. My main point was that I think the idea that he "can't" update his patreon is absurd and doesn't sound believable. My secondary point was that as time has gone on I have become less a fan of Tim because the more self centered his work is, the less effective it has become for specifically me. Obviously many feel differently. It's funny tho to watch the people who mimic his vernacular and bend over backwards to defend him get bent out of shape at the most mild of criticisms.

Ok321letsjam

He's gone out of his way to give you just that exact reassurance at the start of his 4 or 5 most recent twitch streams. It's all there if you want it. Its okay to disagree, but i think its fair to just say; he is working on the videos, is thankful for our support, & won't/cant use social media. That's all totally fair enough by me.

Jordan Cummins

Oh lol no he still gets the money to make the videos we love. It's just some oddballs here complaining he doesn't update on patreon or tweet his progress or whatever. I've never understood the criticism. He's working on the vids, he's getting the funds needed. All is well :) No need to cancel unless you want to, bud.

Jordan Cummins

You mean me? I'm just helping buddy. It's not my or tims fault you don't like the medium he keeps in touch on lmao. It's cool we get to support tim to help him make these cool videos. If people wanna see what he has to say, or see what he is up to regularly, we have his twitch streams to enjoy. I just point out the Twitch as occasionally people seem to not realise that. People seriously say stuff like "Is tim dead!?!". So idk man. Some people might be genuinely worried so I just like to let them know alls good and tims a-working. It's fine

Jordan Cummins

judging by some of the psychos complaining up the joint, not enough.

Jordan Cummins

Hell yeah j new the queen

Nathan Grim

all day

Zach M

does anyone here smoke weed

golok

to be fair, as much as I ike hearing Tim im simply not a huge fan of the fukubukuro stuff. He implies that ie becomes special after a while, but the format of playing a game for a little bit, sorta talking about it doesn't do it for me. but he also told people not to reveal whatever secrets may or may not lie at the end of them so I feel like im missing out, but also I dont want to take that journey lol

camcam9999

As always, this whole project does start to feel a little fishy after a certain point. The content produced is so clutch and so good but also the communication is so stilted and weird. Now we're down to "Patreon error you need to watch the streams to know about"? Come on, man. I have been around serial exaggerators before and I think Tim has, uh, let's call them... editorial ideas of narrative. Is it possible he's working on 6 simultaneous videos? Sure. Is that likely? Maybe not. Is that necessary? Certainly not. We're gonna hit a year with nothing new except theoretically optional bonus content.

Andrew Rynning

Does he not have access to this? Should I not be paying anymore?

Daniel Fischler

i don't mind things you listed. i don't even recognize them as issues or problems. the last thing is weird though because i do appreciate the interpersonal anecdotes rather than the sterile, generic by-the-numbers video essays. but oh well

Zach M

I don't think Tim "owes" anyone anything. People can decide whether or not to contribute to him. He certainly didn't promise anything and look, if you can make a bunch of money to do or not do things the way you want, hats off to you! It's tough out there. My issues are a few 1) It seems like he's ALWAYS got some problem that's delaying him or messing him up. A while back it was Adobe premier if I remember correctly but it's always one thing or the other and after a while you just get the sense that there will always be something like this with this guy. 2) and this is my big beef: I have come to think that Tim is actually pretty contemptuous of his audience. My impression is that he thinks he's a lot smarter than most people (maybe he is) and he's kind of a jerk about it! The rollout of the cyberpunk video was where this really calcified for me. For a while I thought maybe it was funny that he was trying to build drama around it or even just do something different. But after some reflection I think he just thought it was funny to mess with people who genuinely wanted to hear what he had to say and I think that's jerky. It's the same with not posting updates and coming up with unbelievable stories like he "can't get access" to his patreon. He doesn't "owe" anyone anything but that doesn't mean it's not a lame move to act the way he is. 3) Last point really just a minor gripe but whatever video it was where he spent an hour talking about his bomber jacket was another inflection point for me. I think Tim has really interesting ideas about video games, but he does seem to reflexively bring everything back to himself and then spend a lot of time dwelling there. That's fine I guess if I was interested in his self examinations but for me its the worst part of his work and I've really gone from being a big fan to finding it unbearable. Anyway all to say I am probably ending my subscription now but I think y'all are being way to generous to someone who isn't showing it back.

Ok321letsjam

you keep posting about this, but most of us don't watch twitch streams so its a kind of terrible way to keep people updated

Prettz

If he can't get into patreon, why doesn't he tweet that? Like the guy up thread is saying, its not unreasonable to expect a little transparency from someone you've given money to for a year with no return. I want to believe ( and mostly do believe) more vids are coming, but we're at a point where its not unreasonable to be worried that we are just throwing money down a hole. I don't need much reassurance, but I do need SOME.

Grrrbah

Yeah.. I dunno. He seems to ALWAYS have some issue that is outside of his control right? Like he's well known enough that if he wanted to get access to his Patreon back he could. Does he still get the payouts from them monthly? That just doesn't make sense. Agree with some of the comments here and absolutely any individual can decide to give him money or not but the idea that he can't get in to his Patreon at all is ridiculous.

Ok321letsjam

I had no idea he has a twitch stream (I'm a father of 4 and a teacher, so my time is rather limited!). I appreciate the info.

Daniel Shaw-Cosman

He's working on the entire 3rd season of reviews as we speak. You've seen his videos, you know they take time. Watch any of his past three twitch streams and he fully explains whats going on. Idk where people are getting this "he hasnt given updates" thing. He just doesnt tweet and cant get onto patreon. Give him money or not, but the guy works hard enough without needing to post updates every month

Jordan Cummins

yes

Zach M

For a year?!

Fizzay

are you familiar with his twitch streams? he mentioned that because of some error beyond his control he can't access his patreon profile at the moment.

Zach M

A little more transparency would go a LONG way, my dude.

Fizzay

The greatest video game reviewer of all time who doesn't review video games anymore. I've rewatched/relistened to his videos half a dozen times and love every second, every time. But without a single peep since October 2022? I'd love to continue to give you my money, dude, but you're making it tough!

Daniel Shaw-Cosman

Theyre conceptually connected

Jordan Cummins

It's nice to be able to support him doing things at his own pace & from what I know about him he probably is busting his ass right now. I respect his work a lot and won't stop supporting him anytime soon, but it would be nice to get more updates from him or any updates.

Conzi

why would he do that? why not make one at a time so you actually have things to release?

Prettz

nah. but the whole point of having a patreon seems to be allowing himself to be free of undue pressure. Dude is known for working himself to the bone back in the day. I think we can trust he's using the time effectively. So much shitty stuff is made thanks to crunching or hitting deadlines. idk. Personally, i'm happy he can create on his own schedule cause of us. Rad you found the streams though and i adoreee insert credit podcast!! (plus obviously play videoball even though tim no longer owns it. its great.)

Jordan Cummins

The next seven are getting worked on all at once

Brandon Gorin

I didn't know about the podcast or twitch streams! That's cool. Any updates on the next review?

Conzi

Lets Mosey sort of changed me as a person. And then the Cyberpunk review sort of changed me again. But I also need more to be giving money. I think Tim is a genius — and that's a word I don't use lightly. Joanna Newsom, Nobuo Uematsu, a handful of others — there's very few people I'd use that word for. I think TIm also has some shade of inner demon. Performance anxiety or lack of humility or fear of vulnerability or something. Whatever it is, its beyond my paygrade, but there could be some effort to openness here that would keep me around. But its not here. And that's okay. Tim, buddy, you changed my life and my artistic understanding. And also, I gotta go. <3

Howl Hughes

Surely youre not finished with the Funkuburu yet? Theres so much. Everyone should remember theres his insert credit podcast and his weekly twitch stream. Idk imo theres a fair amount of content

Jordan Cummins

Gosh darn if I don't feel like a chump paying $10 a month when it's been a year without content, but I love his work and will continue to support it. Another dry year though and I'm gonna begin to think about getting mad.

Conzi

He does a weekly twitch stream lmao, he's been here the whole time

Jordan Cummins

Alright y’all… it’s been real ✌🏾

SankofaNYC

He's not, or the AI they use for the Insert Credit Podcast is really well-made.

I flew to Portland recently on short notice, with a layover in LAX. They ratted me over to this weird little annex, you know the one--you take a bus to it--it's about the size of, say, Lansing's entire airport--ground floor only--big signs on the doors reading "STERILE AREA," which really got me thinking I had the wrong place, maybe some kind of bio lab, some kind of virus containment facility. Surreal. I noticed I was going to have to walk a long sort of theme-park-ride ramp up to the plane. No restaurants, no kitschy shops in the whole place, none of the stuff I usually gawk at in airports. Just one set of restrooms at the far end and this little hole-in-the-wall by the entrance with some truly terrible sandwiches and Eleven Dollar Twelve Ounce Blue Moons. Well, I had one, because I wasn't going to be in the air again for another couple of hours--a sandwich, I mean--well, a beer, too, a Corona. And the experience was deeply unsatisfying. Really the worst bit of airport I've ever seen. The flight to Portland was worth it, though--California is just as beautiful from the air as it is otherwise. I guess now I've had the Big Sur two ways. I relished the little bit of time back in my home state, too, if only on principle, and it reminded me of your next review, which I'm sure I will enjoy whenever it's ready.

I subbed hoping for thrashing one day for my beloved nostalgia bomb, NES/SNES Mega Man. But it's okay if you don't because no one could make a forgery of what you do, so this subscription is for YOU :) BUDDY

You’ve occasionally expressed an anxiety , regarding the merit of the media you produce. If I could glean the nature of this preoccupation, I imagine it’s something about earnestness’s potential to collapse into maudlin, self obsession. Or worse, that in your attempts to mitigate such displays of sentimentality, you’ve stripped the media of anything true, or worthwhile. This era of winking, ironic self-awareness, media with something genuine to express has become vanishingly rare. But, I swear with all the weight the word of a stranger can muster, these video game reviews have managed to communicate facets of American childhood and adolescence that are deeply moving. And as my own comment threatens to tip into unforgivable sentimentality, I just wanted to say you’re doing an excellent job. I can’t wait to see more.

Alex Stevenson

I love Action Button, so I feel that $240 over the span of half a decade is a steal. If Sir Tim charged by the hour to watch his videos, I'd probably have already spent that much anyway. ❤️

Colquitt

you've just added several months worth of book reading to the LA Noire video creation

Prettz

Well the next one is LA Noire. Apparently Earthbound is the end of this season ... if its the same length as last season it means you could expect it to be around 2027 or so ($240 worth of your patronage from now depending what time of the year he posts it)

Prettz

It's gonna be years lol

George Efta

Hi. I'm new. I love your videos very much and look forward to making plans on some future Saturday to watch an entire new saga on release. I heard a rumor that a deep dive review of Earthbound was in the works and felt that 5 dollars a month until this presumably glorious and beautiful work of journalism was available was a worthy gesture of support for said glorious and beautiful work of journalism.

If for some reason you've been thinking about Los Angeles lately, you may have already heard of or read City of Quartz by Mike Davis. Just in case you haven't, it may be a nice read, at some point. It provides some excellent critical lenses for looking at the area, and is an exhilarating read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Quartz https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/culture-monster-blog/story/2011-06-30/reading-l-a-mike-davis-city-of-quartz-and-southern-californias-spatial-apartheid

Can't wait to work my through these videos over the next few months/years. I'm still holding out hope for that Boku no Natsuyasumi wallpaper pack too!

I started watching your Wild Arms video and was inspired to go watch the original Wild Arms intro. Due to the sitz im leben in which I first encountered that game, and the distance I now feel from that version of myself, I cried into my hands for some time, despite every note of every instrument having remained uncomfortably familiar to me and available on-demand for the past twenty-five years. You're right. Memory isn't enough. It's... not enough.

there's a thing they happens in twitch chat when a video game moment is coming down to a particular wire - perhaps a fighting game comeback kid is about to gain their nickname, an old RTS stalwart is on the verge of a return to glory, or a team of moba gods is continuing down a seldom travelled trail of excellence... When this kind of moment strikes you'll spot a blooming of emoji wrapped messages like this in chat: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ TAKE MY ENERGY ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ I love that sentiment, and though some yet-discovered feature of energy conservation does allow for the transfer of the same via inter-human orchestrations, it still is a stretch to really believe that a mimetic 'taking' of energy via an online memetic message, likely not even typed, but simply copy and pasted is worth anything. That and 50USD will get you an NES game in 1989. It still means something to me. This emoji fellow reaching out as to gesticulate their very support is not quite the Mercerism of a 'big name' tumbling through Jump King and asking chat to pray for them, but so much more than a simple "this is cool, bro". Action Button makes me want to do stuff, and I found that this kind of tangential participation is quite possible by applying some of the lessons and carrying them forward in my own work, and play. Real results of this practice have made me favor a cheer-leading approach to the Action Button universe which I happily say does give, at least me, some real satisfaction. Unlike, for example, trying to keep up with the discord or whatnot which is a challenge perhaps better suited to the young and free-timed. But here's a perfect opportunity for me to raise a banner and wave it a bit. To the newly defined squad, with their Phantom Thievian nicknames, I feel motivated to say: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ TAKE MY ENERGY ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

George 'Kid' Oldman

Hey, I didn't know about the Fukubukuro playlist. Neat! Between Stream archives, Get Bonus, and the rewatchability of the Offical Stuff, there is so much content. Appreciate all you do, sir. I've never seen anyone do more for their Patrons. You're awesome.

Sounds like three fantastic people to help make these videos. Thanks for all you do Tim, as well as Christa, Alex, and Michael!
