Brockton Bay's Marvelous Mage - URGENT- (Poll)
Added 2024-04-16 16:55:15 +0000 UTCSPOILER WARNINGS! Read the first chapter of Marvelous Mage before participating or reading ahead!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello everyone! Welcome to the first Poll for Marvelous Mage! A quick warning: This poll will only remain open for 24 hours, and I will be using it to write the second chapter!
As you have discovered, BBMM has a magic-centric version of Inspired Inventor. The main character has five charges every two weeks that I will select. He will also receive a sixth purchase that you guys will be voting for! The rules are as follows:
With every recharge, I will create a Poll with a couple of options.
These options will not be from any topics that the MC has purchased, is considering purchasing, or will be considering purchasing any time soon. (Him deciding to put his own points in later does not remove the option)
If the winning topic is breaking new ground, it counts as two levels.
Any other winning topic always purchases a new level, whether it would cost the MC two charges or a hundred.
Every time I start a new Poll, I will be carrying the winner and the second place choice over. (Unless the previous winner completed the topic)
I will occasionally run polls like "All second places," "All winners" or even "All third places."
I also might just reuse things I think are good ideas.
Feel free to recommend ideas for future polls in the comments, but keep in mind these topics will be intentionally out there. "Time Magic" or "Fire Magic" won't make the cut.
(This Poll is closed)
I'm keeping is a general magic system, but using examples from media will help him focus on the concept he wants. It won't necessarily work like it did in the source material, however.
2024-04-17 18:15:16 +0000 UTCAre you planning on taking spells and magic system from other series like DnD, Harry Potter, and the Dresden Files?
2024-04-17 18:12:54 +0000 UTCTransfiguration harry potter style. Good out of combat utility and crowd control in combat. Make his homeless situation livable my repairing and changing the building he is in too. Conjured animals land weapons, lot of uses
2024-04-17 11:09:18 +0000 UTCthe only difference between divine magics and fiendish/warlock magics is who's on the other end of the phone call. Never a good path to go down tbh.
2024-04-17 02:51:00 +0000 UTCAlright how about this. Magic Magic. As in Magic that only functions based on the concept of Magic. Like Metamagic or magic affecting magic. Edit: For simple examples of low level stuff. 1- Taking a much weaker form of a magic you know and adding that weaker form to another to create something different. 2- Being able to use methods that might improve one form of magic to also improve another. 3- shunting the costs of one form of magic to be paid by another form in whatever way that makes sense. High level stuff would be like. 1- Creating chains of magical effects from different types of magic with the allowance of commands like computer code. 2- Limited uses of vastly improving the scale or power of a magic for a time. 3- Reverse casting, taking a real world thing or event and transforming it into a spell under one of your applicable magics, therefore removing the thing/event from reality temporarily.
2024-04-17 02:35:33 +0000 UTCRunic magic might be a fun option for later polls, going from scratching symbols into rocks to carving them into the very bones of reality at the high end. BioAlchemy or fleshcraft might also be fun to play with, though it might be a bit too mainstream for what I think you’re going for? Another facet of classic performance magic that doesn’t get used very often would be Dance magic as a casting method. Anima Magics can be interesting and out there, from partial possession to calling up ancestor spirits. Plus there is always the many many many types of divine magics floating around the omniverse.
2024-04-16 19:44:29 +0000 UTCthis is something i would like to see in a poll, a lot of chapters later. i know thus is not an option right now
2024-04-16 19:12:45 +0000 UTCso, i think blue magic would be really good,once he is a little established. being able to copy parts of a demonstrated parahuman power as a spell, would mean a lot of saved charges down the road. he wont be able to learn everything, but a single limited spell per studied parahuman sounds ok i think. Its a bit meta, but more something to do later.
2024-04-16 19:11:38 +0000 UTCmusical magic cause the tropes a magical bard gets up to in Brockton Bay would be funny
2024-04-16 17:35:54 +0000 UTCI recommend Golem Mancy, a handy branch of magic that can be used for many different things from farming to standing guard and beyond and that can be used no matter what he decides to do whether that's being a villain or hero or even a rouge and since you can make golems out of almost anything he would be able to get started and stay hidden in the beginning
2024-04-16 17:28:05 +0000 UTCWould recommend making healing better as well to get to the level of regeneration of limbs
