Chapter Three-Hundred Twelve
Added 2024-12-03 03:17:09 +0000 UTCThe way Olander holds the protection belt reminds me of a few little facts, and a few options I have, too. Teemo nods at the budding idea and speaks up for me.
âSo, are you sending that belt off to the king, too? The Boss knows how nasty lifedrinking can be, but he doesnât know how wide-spread it is. Is it a big concern when delving elsewhere?â
Olander takes a few seconds to weigh the answer, with the others giving him time to think without their input, before he responds. âI probably should send the belt with my report. Not many dungeons make much use of it, but past a certain level, it does become a lot more common.â
âThen how about, instead of giving up your hard-won loot, you send them a sample with some notes from Honey and Thing?â
Olander blinks a few times as he processes that. âWould that be alright?â
Teemo smirks and nods. âItâs the Bossâ idea to do just that. Itâs not for free, though.â
Olanderâs look steels. âWhat do I need to do?â
âTell the Kingâs best nerds to come visit if they want a better explanation than the sample and notes. The Boss has a Lecture Hall room that he didnât think heâd ever have a reason to use, but heâs getting enough scions with big brains that he figures they might like to try their appendages at teaching.â
Olanderâs resolve is stopped in its tracks at the offer, though most of the others around smile, more used to how I tend to do things. âThatâs it? And heâd use a Lecture Hall for that? Itâs usually for training denizens or imparting knowledge to dwellers.â
Teemo nods. âHeâd be happy to share. Just make sure the nerds know their tuition costs will involve them doing a bit of delving. No free rides here.â
Olander snorts at that and nods. âI think the King might find his greatest minds fighting each other to come.â
âIâll certainly be attending,â speaks up Staiven, with Rhonda looking eager as well. Tula looks interested, too, but I donât think sheâs as eager to delve as the others just yet. She does seem to have something to say, though.
âWould followers of the Great Mother Laermali be allowed to attend, too?â
Teemo shrugs. âIf they come to learn, sure. I hope we wonât be stepping on your toes with that, Rhonda?â he asks the goblin with a wink, who is quick to shake her head.
âItâs no problem! I want to learn as much as you have to offer, too, so I canât complain about Tula or anyone else trying to get the information from you instead!â
Old Staiven smirks at his young apprentice. âMaybe youâll be able to give a guest lecture or two of your own. Youâll probably be easier to understand than most of the scions.â
Teemoâs look sours for a moment, before a few ideas of mine make him brighten back up. âIâm not looking forward to trying to translate for everyone, but Boss has a couple ideas to fix that.â
âHow?â comes the obvious reply from most gathered.
âA modification of the axe and hat that Slash uses. He says it can produce more than just notes, like Slash showed with the voice amplification he was doing for Aranya in the match.â All eyes turn to my earth elemental, who simply nods before making his exit.
âLooks like heâs gonna go tell the nerd brigade they have a new project. Honey and Thing will want to write the notes on lifedrinking and make a simple array to send off, and he and Queen can go over how they made his stuff. Iâll need to stop by later to explain what to do to make a voice without a mouth, but it hopefully wonât be too hard to explainâŠâ Teemo doesnât look too confident in that, but Aranya pats his head with a finger to help encourage him.
âSpeaking of explaining,â pipes up Olander, âHow does Rocky have so much mana to use? He puts so much behind each attack, but I donât understand how he has that much to spend like that.â
My boxer grunts with a smile, and Teemo translates. âMoldybrain here isnât called a savant for nothing. He puts out about half his mana with his first attack usually, and uses the rest to redirect the energies. With his range of affinities, he can grab most of what would usually just be considered lost, and repurpose it for his next attack.â
âSo thatâs what he didâŠâ mutters Olander as he folds his arms, thinking over pieces of the fight.
âCan you do that, Rhonda?â asks Tula.
âI⊠not yet? I know how to use fire to easily make more ice, but I havenât had a chance to practice with kinetic too much. Seeing how Rocky fought, though⊠I really want to try.â
âWe should go see Larrez and try to get a time for us all to delve again. And give him a souvenir. Heâs gonna be so sad he missed the fight, but I guess they canât just leave the manor empty. Someone had to stay behind to make sure nobody could sneak in.â
Teemo smirks at that but doesnât say anything about it, and instead changes the subject. âThen it sounds like a good time for me to head to the forest and explain things to the nerds. Congrats again on the victory, Olander. Hopefully youâll give Rocky a chance to get the belt back before too long.â
The Crown Inspector grins wide. âIâm looking forward to it! But duty calls, and I really do need to finalize my report. When can I get the notes and sample?â
Teemo shrugs. âIn a couple days, probably. Honey has pretty high standards when it comes to sharing information, and Iâm sure Thing will want to share his breakthrough. Just come check in on us when youâre done with your part,â he suggests, and Olander nods and stands.
âThen Iâll go and meet with the Lord Mayor before I get to the paperwork. With my presence being public knowledge now, I wouldnât want to snub him.â
My Voice sticks out his tongue. âBleh, politics. Welp, Iâm not gonna keep you any longer.â He dips into a shortcut as the others make small talk, nobody quite ready to fully part company just yet. I leave them to it, and redirect Teemo to the Sanctum instead of the forest. Sure, the nerds are usually there, but no way was anyone going to miss this fight! It only takes a couple nudges to get everyone else going to the Sanctum, and Iâm glad Coda has been working to continue to slowly expand it.
Though I think much more and itâll need Teemo to give it the old Tardis treatment. Or I could move shop once again. My core is way bigger than it was the last time we moved, but between everyone, Iâm sure we can figure out something if we need to. With all the space Tiny takes up, itâs not a bad idea. But with how comfortable the smaller scions look just sitting on him, I donât think anyone is too concerned.
Anyway, time for a staff meeting!
âAlright, everyone good? Then meeting started. Boss wants to try to do this more often than⊠just this one time, come to think of it. He doesnât have anything in specific in mind to bring up, but he wants to take a sec to make sure everyone is on the same page and see if anyone has any suggestions. So Iâll go first: the Sanctum is definitely getting a bit cramped, even without Tiny in here.â He smiles at my largest scion before continuing.
âSo, he was wondering about me making the space in here bigger than outside. I can do it, but I think itâd be a temporary solution. With all the stuff heâs working on, I think we should look into a real Sanctum Complex.â
A complex? I chew on the idea as my scions do the same, with Coda seeming to be the first to ask a question. âHe asks where we would put it,â translates Teemo.
Hmm. Expanding is an option, but thatâd probably bring another invader to deal with, and doesnât guarantee the space would be good for something like that. If I use space we already have⊠itâd have to be in the Forest of Four Seasons somewhere. Could the trunk of the tree handle being hollowed out enough for something like that?
Teemo relays my question, and I donât need a translation to see Coda and Poppy both look nervous about that idea. âThey say it might work, but itâd take a lot of reinforcing.â
Letâs not then. I really donât want the tree to crack in half with the first strong breeze. What about in the roots?
This time, my scions look thoughtful before answering. âItâd be difficult to get started, but should be doable. Roots naturally like to coil around big rocks and stuff for stability. Poppy says the tree will probably bore into the bedrock, but she canât know exactly what itâll do before you use the expansion to grow it.â
I nod to myself about that and consider the options. We canât really start just yet, but if Poppy can help guide the roots to encourage it to leave large voids between the roots, we should be able to plan out modularly. Hopefully the area under the forest wonât be quite so dense with tunnels and such. In fact⊠we should get the rockslides to survey the area. Iâd hate to learn the whole expansion is over a sinkhole, but Iâd hate it even more to find out only when the tree falls in.
Teemo nods at that and turns to Leo. âLeo, get the rockslides and wyrms to survey under the forest, especially where the tree will be going. If we are going to set up a complex down there, itâd be good to know thereâs nothing already sitting in the space.â
Leo wuffs in acknowledgement before Teemo continues. âCoda, draw up some preliminary designs, but nothing too detailed. We canât plan that surely until itâs grown. Poppy, can you encourage the tree to have roots that spread out, giving us room to build between them?â
She nods with her frontmost flower, and Teemo nods as well. âThen I think thatâs a good enough plan for the moment. Anyone have anything to add?â
Most of the scions indicate no, but Zorro and Goldilocks look like they want to say something. âGo ahead, you two. If you have a need, or think you see a problem, speak up.â
They share a glance before Zorro makes fox noises. Teemo waits for him to finish before smiling. âThe cost wonât be an issue. We can put in work to reduce it, and Boss still has a good wad of mana from the Maw to spend, too. Donât worry, heâs not going to starve himself.â
Zorro still looks worried, so I pat the bond with him, and with Goldilocks for good measure. Iâm glad youâre thinking about me, but you donât need to worry about this, bud. I can still feel concern through the bond, but at least not as much. Heâll just have to wait and see.
âAlright, anyone have any other business? Anything to ask for or make sure the Boss knows about?â
Thing, Honey, and Queen all vie for Teemoâs attention, and he chuckles as he listens. âTheyâre talking over each other, but all three of them are looking forward to using the Lecture Hall once you designate it. For now, one of the rooms in the manor would probably be the easiest place to put it.â
My three scholarly scions put on their best begging poses. I donât know how Honey and Queen manage to make puppy eyes with compound lenses, but they manage. Even Thing gets it on it with plucking and doodling a finger through Tinyâs fuzz like a kid sitting in the grass who wants something, but doesnât want to actually ask.
Fine. Fine! Iâll designate it! You three will have to share for now, though. I think the Sanctum will make a good lecture hall proper once we move. I spend the money and turn a room that I think was a study into a lecture hall, though it looks more like a cramped classroom right now with a handful of small desks and a chalkboard on the wall now.
The three celebrate while Teemo laughs. âNow donât forget about the notes Olander needs, too!â They all three nod before they start communicating amongst themselves, and Teemo leaves them to it.
âAlright, anything else?â

Oh Order is NOT gonna have fun time reasoning through what to do with TheDiem figuring out how to allow his other Scions to speak to non-monsters. Tho it should fly as long as he himself doesnât communicate trough them

2024-12-10 11:27:15 +0000 UTCTYFTC! I always like the scion interactions, they really are a big family. With Thediem and the scions starting to teach classes, I sense some rather large impacts and ripples across the world.

2024-12-04 00:23:38 +0000 UTCTFTC!! I love all the personality in this story. If one day plushies were to be made for this story I am not ashamed to say I would get one for each scion.

2024-12-03 18:12:20 +0000 UTCZero was simply concerned as he is new and not yet used to a dungeon that has such a high influx of mana. He thought Thediem might run out of mana working on such a big project.

2024-12-03 14:58:49 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter! The scion interactions was great! And just like in previous chapters, Olander's reactions seem to shed more light on the rest of the world and how it works outside of our own favorite weird dungeon! Good stuff!

2024-12-03 11:48:11 +0000 UTCAlso I wonder how much mana the DM got from Rockies fight considering even losing fights generates mana, given that there was a whole stadium of folks tooâŠ

2024-12-03 09:02:16 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter! Can't wait to hear Tarls perspective having heard all the full blown shenanigans the DM has done while he's away and also see Purple and Hullbreaks reaction to the fight -Edit; sorry just wanted to share how awesome it is to see how far Rocky has come, looking back at the early chapters and seeing how Rocky was just some confused zombie wearing training guards; unsure even what heâs trying to achieve. Now heâs sharp on wit and is fighting the greats. Thatâs what I love about your stories Khernal, Rocky had to earn that skill and power the long hard way and wasnât just given it, (and this is just one of the B plots!)

2024-12-03 05:34:57 +0000 UTCThank you for the meal! It was as delicious as ever. So with the fight over and Olander given something to lure in the kings favor we go back to planning it seems. I love how the Forest gets slowly to the final stages and now we get a long needed upgrade for the sanctum! I can already see the pilgrims march to the core to pray a bit. I could see a church like style for the sanctum coming up
