Some Thoughts on Coming of Age Stories

Hey, so I think change is not between two neutral opinions. One opinion is “healthier” depending on the character. A pacifist character needs to learn to stand up for themself. A warlike character needs to chill out. But to accomplish this you just need to custom build a plot that facilitates it. The plot is not desirable for its own sake, it is designed to make those arcs happen. The plot bends over backwards for the characters. Obviously the finished plot will LOOK natural, but really it was a tailored situation. Maybe you’ll need to seperate the characters and put them in completely different situations in order to have them learn their lessons

Really insightful video, as always. One thing I'd like to know more about is your approach to supporting character arcs, as you talked about with Boy. That is, how do you manage two or more characters changing their perspectives around a similar themes but from different starting points and in different directions? I'm struggling to write a main and supporting character who each have opposing views on the theme but since different experiences will affect them differently (if at all), I find it difficult to allow each of them to be changed by the narrative in a natural and earned way. Thanks for your advice and keep it up.

This would explain a lot about why I don’t understand my secondary MC in my story. He starts out as innocent and had a negative arc that turns positive in the end but I struggled to understand who he was until I watch this! Thank you for your insight Lucas this helped me a TON!
