Enneagram Type 9

And so it begins. Hoping to drop this two weeks from today, which will be the beginning of the weekly enneapost run. If you haven't watched "fixing the enneagram" please check that out first, it sets he stage for this series. Also if you're a nine... thoughts?

Enneagram Type 9

Comments

Here's a comment from my type 9 sister: I identified myself as a 9 because I took tests and saw other resources that pointed to me being a 9. I think the video had a fairly static view of 9s though, only showing them as stubborn walls, when I feel like I exhibit the same type of behavior, but for different reasons. For me, being a 9 is all about easing tension, usually through compromise, regardless of other factors. "Keeping the peace" so to speak. This doesn't inherently refuse growth, but it makes it harder, putting it at a lower priority. This makes me seem fairly static, when in reality I'm constantly pushing for growth, there's just a lot of other barriers. This might be partially because of the fiction angle of the video, but he represents a 9's growth as accepting the ladder and climbing out of the pit. In reality, it's not that simple. There isn't really a ladder like that; either it's not complete, or it's hard to find. Another aspect that wasn't addressed is the confusion between 9s and 2s. A lot of sources emphasize that they can misidentify as each other, but the video doesn't seem to support that theory. One of the major strategies for "keeping the peace" is kindness, sacrificing your own needs for the sake of others, which is also a 2 trait of course. This might be a consequence of more social 9s, if you want to get into subtypes, but it's definitely the side that I fall on. Honestly, I have a lot of 2 qualities as well, except I'm not as self assured as most sources, including your videos, suggest.

We're missing an obvious 9 - Rambo (the first one). Rambo in the first Movie is a classic 9 coded protagonist who has sucked up the bullshit of the war and the way he was treated after the war and just wants to be left alone. But a small town dickhead Sheriff triggers his rage monster and his gut type finally unleashes ala Hulk style and things get ugly. I know I'm showing my age, but to have Stallone showing as Type 9 pathology in both Rocky and Rambo is very interesting. Adding to this... Rambo is ALSO a classic of how NOT honoring the Enneagram type RUINS the character. Later movies reimagine Rocky as more of a Type 1 pathology hell-bent on justice, but that's not what anyone who saw the original movie connected with. It's why the franchise went so badly off the rails, because of the cognitive dissonance of the titular character who was both a 9 in one movie and a 1 in the sequel.

if it's true that all 9 core urges/fears exist in every person, but one takes priority, what would make it impossible for the priorities to change with lived experiences?

Lucas Meyer

Some of your most useful work by far mate. Can't wait for the rest

Papa Mojo

I think serious trauma can add new energies and urges to the body, but whether that constitutes a new type I'm not sure

LocalScriptMan

do you think it’s possible to change from one type to another? bc i keep reading no but the more i think ab it the more i really think i did

princessofsaturn

Yeah absolutely, happy to try and help if I can!

Thayra

One you say…? Definitely the type I understand the least. I’d love to ask you some questions if you’d be up for it

LocalScriptMan

"Look Chani, I know it's our job to help this guy and everything, but I think this guy is a lost cause. He's obviously made up his mind, so why don't we just cut our losses and get out of here?"

Elsper

Also, as a 1 in a long term relationship with a 9, god this is so spot on. I feel like I have to give so many nudges for my partner to think about what they *actually* want, not just tag along with whatever I'm driving us towards! He's impeccably tolerant and patient, but that also means he'll stay in a job that is awful to him for way to long because he "doesn't mind", even though it's objectively bad for his wellbeing.

Thayra

Love love this already. I started writing something for fun recently using the enneagram as a jumping off point for my characters (thanks to your previous videos), and what's great is the more you share about your perspective on it, the more I'm like "Yep, that totally aligns with what I'm discovering." You explain things in a brilliantly succinct yet full way. You're right, it just works.

Thayra

Awesome! Looking forward to it.

LocalScriptMan

So you're going in descending order from 9 to 1?

Jonathan

I am so absolutely hyped for this series. The moment you started talking about enneagram stuff is the moment I started seeing my characters in a completely different light. Simple ‘boring’ dialogue scenes I thought nothing of before have suddenly become my absolute favorite scenes to write. I EAGERLY await each of these following videos. I really don’t think I can stress that enough.

Big Soda

This is great to hear from an IRL type nine, thank you!

LocalScriptMan

As a 9, this is the most accurate representation I've seen yet. For me, my "Getting out of the ditch" moment was going through Covid and realizing I didn't want to be stuck in the same situation forever. Part of that was going to therapy and getting medicated for anxiety, but I digress. Also, I do have that "One day I'll do this" monologue, which comes from a temporary feeling of either excitement or frustration, only for it to go away as soon as I thought it. The only times I've actually willed myself to do something is when, funnily enough, I haven't thought of doing it. To quote Shia, I "just did it." Good job as always! Looking forward to the rest of this series.
