How to Succeed as a Creative I Think

Been agonizing over these ideas for a while, but I'm probably going to put out a video this week.

How to Succeed as a Creative I Think

great video! btw is there a working discord link anywhere maybe?

monsterpatika

the blender donut series guy is god

LocalScriptMan

Do you just reflexively demystify anything you see as needlessly complex? And do you know anyone who gives bomb-ass Blender tutorials?

Stuart Stone

This entire video is essentially what I've been doing for the last 2 months. Being useful pays off.

Elijah K. Ashburn

Unconventional, efficient, and tactically advanced as usual

As someone who would rather chew my own arm off than succeed as a creative, I appreciate the hell out of this. I wish I'd heard a realistic take like this 18 years ago before I wasted time and money on art school just to end up with a career I hated. It's great information for people who want to succeed, but equally useful for people who don't want that kind of relationship with their art and don't know it yet. Every time a well-intentioned friend tells me to put my stuff out there to "get noticed" I want to run screaming into the woods. It's liberating to waste all the resources I want making my art rad as fuck just for the satisfaction of learning to do a thing well, even if I never feel like sharing it with anyone.

very insightful and surprisingly positive in its pragmatism!! great job

Yeah I definitely have an extremely limited social battery haha. Thank you 🙏

I said it on YT and I'm gonna say it here, too: Thank you for this one. It's so, so, sooo stupid important, and so basic, yet hardly anyone seems to be aware of it. A big chunk of this advice also goes for other industries (illustration, writing novels) so I will come back to watch this whenever I need a refresher. (Also, to join the chitchat: I'm 34 and learning so much from you about writing. And by the way, it's super refreshing to learn that you're also more of an introvert (if I got that right) and that likeability only gets you so far. Made me feel so much better.)

Tristan (Cinnastray)

Extremely important, and a great lesson! I'm looking to secure myself copywriting/service work when I get out of University at the end of this year, and I'm trying to build up skills that I can use to market myself as a service (video editing/production, voiceover, etc). Here's hoping I can put myself on that road of serving very soon!

Thank you so much 🫡

LocalScriptMan

Nah certainly not. Someone could also just know you and like you and want to throw some cash at you. But if you don’t have any existing work it’s one of the only ways to show value

LocalScriptMan

I absolutely want to second that last part you said. I’m personally only 21, but I’ve taken plenty of writing courses that have all been either very slow, or amounted to nothing in terms of actual learning. I mean it from my soul when I say I am CONSTANTLY recommending the YT channel to other creatives in my social circles. I’ve learned more in a 10 minute video from Lucas more than I’ve learned in at least three college level creative writing courses. This video as well has opened my eyes in a profound way just now. There’s a million things here that I haven’t even thought of, and now, suddenly, I feel like there’s a chance for me to get somewhere if I can actually manage to apply these things. TL;DR: Lucas, you mad dog.

Big Soda

Great mind opener. But is doing free work for people the only way to get into the industry if you don't have any connections?

Mr. Quackers

👏👏 incredibly well said

Good God damn Lucas this is a reality check of humbling proportions. First, for context, I am a 50 year old (6'4" - yes now I feel short) multi-creative who poured myself into hard science and coding for years and lived in the business world but am beginning to transition to novels. Also I have a Type 4 fixation (for those keeping up with the enneagram series]. The reality of how crowded the market is for creatives is at the highest levels is so disheartening for many. But this video should be a GOOD NEWS for creatives. If you love what you do there is demand for it in places you aren't thinking about. And if you are willing to be part of a team of creative people rather than have others always bring your work to life, there is demand. Listen to the words. Podcaster, Youtubers, Directors all want and need creative voices. Bit I will add what Lucas didn't say explicitly that they want help with crafting THEIR vision, not yours. Be humble. Learn every day. I have learned more from Lucas at age 50 than I did from my profs in my 20s (late bloomer]
