Enneagram 1 draft

Two has been annoying, so here's One for now... How's everybody doing? I'm in the process of moving out to Los Angeles, so work has suffered. But I will finish this series yo. Mark my marks.

Enneagram 1 draft

Comments

I debated making this comment cause this video is beyond out, but having this conversation with my best friend, eh I thought it might be helpful for some people in this community so I'm going to post it here. I love all the videos in this series, but... there is that gap in the intuitive understanding of 1s here that might be muddying the waters with the 8 or even the head types. So why is the 1 so self-righteous and angry? How is that adaptive? I think you rightly point out it is because the principles aren't the point, but you get the reasoning backwards. The rules are formed *because* the child is adapting to their unjust environment. While nature is half the explanation, I think understanding the nurture will help some people with the intuition part. The 8's passion is lust, a passion similar to the 7, but primarily focused on dominating their environment to feel safe but also physically fulfilled (food, sleep, sex) yada yada needs. As you said, they had to fight to fill those needs. The 9's passion is sloth, hence why they are numb to their environment and don't "rock the boat" in the case that their needs might stop being met. They've learned to minimize their internal desires and own needs to pretend they are fulfilled. The specific situation the 1 faces is the passion of wrath or the most emotional anger of the anger in the gut triad. Their environment was unjust and punished them for attempting to get their needs met and existing within a highly structured or hierarchical environment where rules are emphasized will often lead someone to develop perfectionist tendencies about following rules to be correct, even if it is not the unjust rules of their childhood, but their own set of rules they then developed to make peace with the injustice they see or to ensure they will be 'the pick me' to use some social terminology here. This doesn't have to be morally coded, but of the gut types, 1s are most likely to already use existing social or legal structures to meet their needs rather than fight it directly or accept the nature of the structure like the 8 and the 9. TLDR; the 8 overexpresses their gut impulses, the 9 is almost completely disconnected from their gut impulses, and the 1 is constantly in conflict with their gut impulses, and usually see their anger as an imperfection and fundamentally contradicts their own principles unknowingly. So I would say their rules are not a dam with specific holes, but more like a levee that works in tropical weather, but will not be useful in a tundra. The rules are fixed early on with only minor changes later, although the ego justification might not be, and really it depends on the environment to how the 1 will respond to perceived injustice. This pattern appears to continue in the other triads, and is especially obvious in the heart center, which is why I believe it makes sense to apply here.

It’s got major problems but I still enjoyed it :)

Olivia Andersen

Yeah she’s pretty one-ish, but the enneagram is not something that perfectly applies to any character

LocalScriptMan

Are Caitlyn from Arcane is 1? Like yeah, her stong morals and justice feelings, but she didn't denied her belief in the end. Yes, she was chilling with Mel's mum, however then she returns to her belief. Does it makes her arc tragedy or regression? I don't think so, its kina happy ending for her

TheSamAins

Yo, thanks for commenting and yeah I definitely have a little one in me then. 😅 Silco has a lot of one energy. If I trityped him, I’d go with 146

LocalScriptMan

Yeah I’d agree, he’s got a lot of three but a lot of one too (still haven’t seen season 2 though 😳)

LocalScriptMan

In arcane at first it seemed like both Viktor and Jayce were 3s but by the end I thought Jayce seemed to be a 1: ruining and destroying things by trying to do good or to do the right thing. Seemed very 1 coated to me

Olivia Andersen

Just came back to provide an example. I think Silco from Arcane might be a 1, and he's not a morally righteous guy at all. He has beliefs, and he can't stand that Vander doesn't see the truth like he does. You might paint him as a 6, but I don't think so... Thanks for turning me onto this stuff. It's fun.

KadinSketch

I subbed to just to get your thoughts on 1's after binging your other videos. I'm new to this, but I'm pretty sure I'm a 1. And I'm glad it's in your Tri-type, because I was thinking "bro I'm pretty sure you're a 1" the whole time, too. I think this video focuses too much on righteous belief and morals, but a 1 can build a system of rules for themselves in any arena. Using myself as an example. I'm learning to make comics. Without even trying, I'm building up maxims on "how to actually make comics" and judging those that can't see the truth like me. I'd say my positive arc in life has been figuring out I have something I can learn from anyone, and learning to accept different schools of thought without feeling the need to argue for my own. Cause you're right. I'm a hater. I can tell you what's wrong with just about everything. The opening to this video is perfect. Keep that in. 👌

KadinSketch

I find type 1's to parallel 5's. If you had them both stuck in a heated argument to convince the other.5’s would think: “I’m uncomfortable with not knowing how this person thinks” while 1’s think “I’m uncomfortable with how this person acts.” An underlying difference between them for me is: 5’s like to show their work while 1’s just write the answer. If 5’s precedent isn’t working they either workshop until it does or understand it’s better not to worry about it. If 1’s precedent isn’t working they either ignore the flaw or reflect on it and change. The cracks in the brain vs the cracks in the dam of intuitions, both of their respective ‘healthy’ moments is to stop patching the cracks and letting things seep through, which ironically is by doing what the other type shouldn’t do. Futile to reason with a gut 1, Futile to get a fear 5 to stop reasoning

Randy

It just depends on how you would consider it as a conscious effort. 1s cant control it, but they can be aware of it. Acting outside of it at all is the difficult thing that leads to their growth.

bea

Long comment blah blah. I think I'm a 1, so I'll try to explain what I experience. I've thought it through a bit differently from my previous comment. Lmk if it seems like another type. I experience it kinda like a filter that automatically stops impulses from reaching me. Like I am very aware that something is missing, but my body only tells me to do thing I *should* do. It also sometimes feels like impulses are slowed down instead of stopped, but impulses stop being impulses if they are not immediately acted on. It feels like a way of intellectualizing all of my behavior, but I still base what I end up doing on what feels right and wrong. So this feels like a conscious effort. I have ideas about the 1 impulse restriction presenting differently. I'm thinking about it along an axis of growth, although I don't know if they are actually connected in this way. 1. Fully Ingrained. The 1 sees their code as their authentic way of being. They feel like it works well and they have no reason to believe otherwise. 2. Partial Awareness. The 1 feels that they restrict themselves. They feel impulses that they cannot act on. They think something is wrong with them. 3. Full Awareness. The 1 understand that they have internalized beliefs that they restrict impulses to align with. They feel when this restriction happens, and can often understand themselves well enough to know the impulses that they repress. 4. Self-Actualization. How they beat the fixation. The 1 actively acts on their impulses, bypassing the restriction. Also the restriction of 1s is just how they use their core belief to control their OWN behavior. They are known to apply it to other people too, and I think this happens because they usually (most of the time initially) believe that their core belief is a universal fact of life that applies to everyone. They slowly grow to accept that it is actually just an internalized belief about their own life, and that they can, in fact, oppose their belief (their main point of growth). I think some good 1 examples are Carmy and Syd from The Bear, but I also have a theory that Ekko is one too. (No spoilers) Ekko is literally the perfect person because he has principles that work (he protects others by avoiding any immoral decision, always doing whats right), but his character arc is about accepting the gap in his principles. All his character moments revolve around him realizing that his strict morality doesn't account for love.

bea

Yeah “an attempt to stop it” is good, I guess part of my question comes down to how conscious that attempt is

LocalScriptMan

I hear and understand that; I actually completely agree with it! I think where I’m getting caught up in it is that anger, while it’s a whole-ass emotion, is almost never something experienced in a vacuum, especially when it comes to complex storytelling. I think Jack Nicholson is a wonderful example of someone who uses anger as a healthier mosaic for storytelling (I think there’s a yt vid talking about it somewhere?). But to the point: anger feels like something that manifests for the gut types and then how they chose to respond to it determines their fixation. But there seems to be something (some kind of emotional response) that pre-determines why the anger is there in the first place and that we can run the risk of making the anger only 3 dimensional through the context it’s presented in. Maybe this is getting too heady, but it jumped out at me as I watched it. Wdyt?

Joseph Green

I feel like the dam analogy kinda misrepresents type 1 principles. The principles aren't there to allow anger to selectively escape, they are there as an attempt to stop it. I think of anger more like a hose with an inconsistent water pressure. Sometimes its a strong burst, sometimes nothing comes out. All a type 1 does is put a foot on it. Now, from the outside, you might see a very small constant stream, which comes across as frustration and passive aggressiveness. But on the inside, the pressure is extremely high. They think they need to be perfect, but they can never reach an unattainable goal. Imperfection becomes self hatred as the anger builds inside. The core belief is not inherently about other people, but something like "I need to be ___" can easily become "everyone needs to be ___" when they happen to hide the feeling of constantly being pissed off.

bea

I've been thinking about Chuck as the poster child for tragic 1 characters since the start of this series, the way his repressed rage manifests as a physical response to electricity, the way he uses the law to justify his petty hatred toward his brother, he's as 1 as it gets. The electricity disease is especially perfect in how it dramatizes the way 1s can project their anger onto specific, innocuous things as a means of covering up what they're really mad about.

Cart Mart

The way I see it, anger is the main source of tension for gut types, but it's mixed up with all impulse and intuition, anything that constitutes a base instinct. All the gut types operate primarily from that instinctual level, but they each have a different relationship with it. The 1's "righteous anger" is a coping mechanism designed to justify and/or control all of their impulses, which they don't know how to accept as purely irrational (usually because "being good" and "following the rules" was how they got their needs met growing up and expressing their instincts was punished or frowned upon). They're in conflict with their body in general. So on the least healthy end of the spectrum, you can get a character like Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame, who convinces himself Esmerelda must be a witch because he's physically attracted to her and he can't think of another way to justify it.

Cart Mart

Morality just seems like a head thing, but it is intuitive. ("Moral intuitions") In reality, a moral condemnation is a disgust reaction. The disgust is visceral. Therefore, Gut! https://www.psicothema.com/pdf/4103.pdf Ned Stark is disgusted by Jaime Lannister. Not because of something he thought through, but because of a visceral reaction at what he, at a glance, identifies as the lowest of the low. For the same reason Jaime does not get through to him in that same S1 scene. As you pointed out in 8 and 9: Reasoning with a gut type can be futile.

Johannes

It’s interesting to hear you speak about 1 as having a righteous sense of anger; from what I’ve heard you share about 8 and 9, I thought that the through line of the gut type would have been a sharper adherence to impulse and intuition and having anger as a secondary characteristic rather than anger being at the core itself. Wdyt? Is there a fundamental thing that you think I’m missing either in the video or enneagram as a whole?

Joseph Green

As far as the show is concerned, she is what I would call a poorly written character. As in she suddenly shifted towards this “for the good of the realm” thinking without any particular reason for her suddenly increase in empathy. But they could have done a one thing with her. In F&B she’s definitely very gut type, but I’d say closer to 8 or 9. Angry, indulgent, etc.

LocalScriptMan

Is Rhaenyra Targaryen a 1? Someone so certain of their own right that anyone going against them is inherently bad?

Marina Wilson

Time to continue blasting this series on repeat until I dissolve :D thank you Lucas scripty man!

Garrett Brady

Oof yeah I have found that they’re allergic to fakeness

LocalScriptMan

I'm writing a novel that uses a courtroom deposition as a framing device. One of the first things you learn is that the subject of that deposition is lying about some of her testimony, and then you go back in time to the start of her Big Case and find out she's a dogmatic Type 1 who is allergic to lying and cutting corners.

Pete L

Haha you should write this dynamic into something

LocalScriptMan

My best friend of six years is a One and I'm a Four and it is genuinely hilarious the way we've had to adapt to accommodate each other. I'm big on lying due to extraneous contexts and she's DEVOTED to truth, but since we care so much for each other, I've made sure not to include her in ANY lies I tell, knowing it would make her uncomfortable, and she's made an exception to her rules for me, so that now she's essentially of the opinion 'lying is wrong except for when you do it, its funny and endearing when you do it bc i trust you are justified in your intentions'. Mutual character growth lol!

LocalScriptMan

This is so exciting! I've been looking forward to the conclusion of the body types. Also, I am a new member could I get a link to the discord?

Emma Alford

Yeah idk enough about your story but that feels unique and cool

LocalScriptMan

Ahh it's here! My type one brain was thinking "Oh but sometimes it's not about explicit rules, someone could actually think being 'right' is about NOT thinking in black and white and obsessing about moral greys! I'm not rigid!" So the fact that my gut got defensive and picky like that probably means you hit the nail on the head, lol. After I shushed my ego, yeah this checks out. Great work as always. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Thayra

Wow! Big deal moving to LA! I wish you luck!

Winter

Yay! I'm so happy to get your thoughts on 1's as I'm writing a story that I believe is a 1 story. However, I have a question around arcs. In the story I'm writing the protagonist "gets their hands dirty" as you say really at the beginning of the story and the rest of the story is a fight to prove if it was worth it or not as they battle the rule setters to create a positive change where ups and downs happen blah blah blah. By the end of this tale it turns out it WAS worth it to get their hands dirty as that has inspired other to do the same but I'm just wondering from your perspective, am I doing arcs wrong? like shouldn't the "get the hands dirty" part be at the beginning of ACT 3 no the beginning of the story? I apologize if I'm asking this in the wrong space, but thank you for reading if you do! Big fan, thanks for all the great videos, I've leant a lot from them :) good luck on the move!!

Justin Lafreniere

Im treating it like Silksong. Letting it cook is worth the wait.

Straps-of-skin

The video was just too disorganized but I’m hoping to fix it up tomorrow!

LocalScriptMan

Yeah he’s definitely going in the B-roll for this one!

LocalScriptMan

loved it :] i’m so interested in how 2 is going

aciinonyx

Thinking of the 1’s morality as more of a gut driven impulse makes a lot more sense actually. I used to wonder why they felt so “head typeish” to me.

Straps-of-skin

Great draft! I’ve been looking forward to this one! I’m curious as I did my own research on type 1 fixations. Would Chuck McGill have a type 1 fixation? From what I can tell he fits the details and characteristics

TheskinnyOne 1

Im even more excited for the 2 video now, one of my fav enneagram types to write.
