Frieren - Ep. 8/9/10 Reaction! | My Favourite Episodes Yet!

We get three bangers fights happening at once, Frieren and Flamme backstory, more lore regarding demon hierarchies, and the incredible (COLD) ending to Frieren Vs. Aura.

I had to re-record these episodes because of my harddrive dying in December – but don't let that deter you from how great these episodes are, and how much I still loved them the second time around!

Comments

I just now edited the comment above (due to finding out that I misremembered the color thing, but the rest of what I said in that comment is still true).

Lastly, a fun little detail in episode 8 in Japanese that isn't possible to translate in English: When Frieren kills Draht, and says ''That's one down.'' In the Japanese language, you use counters added to numbers that change depending on what is counted. Normally, when counting people, for saying one (about a person) it would be ''hitori''. And that is what Frieren uses when counting people. But for demons, for one demon, she said ''ippiki''. This is the counter for when counting animals. (side note: Goblin Slayer in the Goblin Slayer anime also uses the counter for animals as he counts every goblin kill.)

Secondly: Another thing interesting about demons is them not being as much a species, but instead a collective of monster races/species that evolved to be capable of human speech. This leads to demons having very different appearances. About these demons not looking monstrous, it's because of how some monster evolve to be demons. Like Frieren said, Flamme defined Demons as any monster capable of human speech. These monsters aren't all fully humanoid in appearance. While Aura, her 3 demon subordinates and the demon kid in the flashback look human-like safe for the horns, the other 3 demons we've seen before were either vaguely humanoid or more beast-like. For examples: - Qual in episode 3 looked mostly humanoid, but was also distinctly not human looking. - The quadrupedal giant monster with giant horns that Eisen(the dwarf) was trembling in front of when alongside the hero party in a small flashback in episode 6 was also most likely a demon. - The giant baphomet-looking demon with many giant snake tails seen in the flashback in the first half of episode 7 was somewhat humanoid looking, and distinctly not human looking. Another important example of a monster similar to a demon yet isn't a demon is the Einsam, the monster from episode 5 who creates phantom illusions from the memories of humans nearby. The only reason Einsam monsters aren't classified as demons is that they aren't capable of human speech and haven't reach the point in their evolution where they become individuals (Einsam monster tend to all be pretty much the same).

This comment chain is about stuff from episodes 7 to 10. Rather than about your commentary or stuff specifically from these episodes, these comments are about an analysis I made concerning demons and how they are portrayed in the series up to this point: Firstly: Something important to note is that, even though the demon kid (in the flashback of ep7) said she just wanted to "live in peace," her definition of "living in peace" is different from that of humans. Eating humans is an instinctual preference of demons. Killing those who annoy you in any way is a natural instinct of demons. Those things are part of what "living in peace" means to demons like that demon kid. Also, the demon kid not understanding humans doesn't mean that she could've gotten along with them if she understood. It only means that she would've been better at manipulating humans and would've continued killing in much smarter ways as she got older (maybe by staging things for it to look like the work of beasts or other monsters).

I also find it cool that humans have no idea that Frieren is known as The Slayer by demonkind. She didn't just kill the most demons in history. She did that in the span of ONLY 10 YEARS!

About the ultra/mega Zoltrack. The demon killing version is actually visually different from the human killing one. The human killing Zoltrack created by Qual and later integrated into humanity's magic system as ordinary offensive magic is black colored with a thin white outline. (edit: I misremembered, the only black colored version is the one that Qual used, aka Zoltrack as is without modifications by humans.) This is the one that kid Fern used in the show to try and hit the rock before being taught by Frieren. (edit: The zoltrack used by human as ''ordinary offensive magic'' looks the same as the one used by Frieren and Fern (including the scene where Fern used it as a kid. ) The demon killing Zoltrack created by Frieren is white colored with a thin black outline. When Fern cast the spell that finally hit the rock, we didn't get to see the spell itself, but the illumination of the casting was white (something that wasn't there for the human killing version). (edit: So this means that the white colored version is just the result of humanity adapting it to their system in a way for any human mage to be able to use it, and that after that Frieren modified it further while keeping the same appearance. If anything, that only makes the deception vs demons better. ) Frieren taught Fern this version she created, one she didn't share with the rest of humanity, and never told Fern the difference. Fern just thought that she was being taught how to better use ''ordinary offensive magic''. The reason Frieren didn't teach her demon killing version to humanity is because if she did, demons would have learned of it and found ways to defend against it. Same principle as the hiding of the real mana capacity. It is only as viable as it if kept secret. Like Lugner said, demons overcame Zoltrack half a century ago. What he means is that after humanity made Zoltrack into one of their own spells, they started using it against demons in mass. Demons thus had to further develop their means of magic defense and resistance. (As they are made of mana, it is implied that they can use magic to manipulate their body's magic defenses and resistances, but not on the fly.) This demon killing version basically bypasses all the defenses the demons made against Zoltrack just like how Qual's original Zoltrack bypassed the magic defenses of humans back in the days. It is a beautiful middle finger to demons that only realize it as they get hit, and since Frieren normally leaves no survivors, the secret doesn't get out. And the human witnesses don't understand the difference between the two Zoltrack versions, so they think that it's just Frieren (and Fern) being powerful (breaking through the demons' defenses by force) instead of it being the doing of the spell itself.

Overall, while the group won relatively easily in the end, things could've been disastrous had a few details been different. For example, while Drat wasn't able to do anything against Frieren, he would have easily killed both Fern and Stark. Similarly, Stark would have died to Lugner had they fought more. Him being a blood mage is the only reason he survived his first confrontation with Frieren in the past, because he can relatively easily survive fatal injuries so long as his heart and brain remain. In other words, he is the worst enemies of warriors, for the injuries he receive are nigh scratches to him, and they only increase the amount of blood he can dish out at once, as well as creating new attack angles for his blood.

a treat on not even flat frieren friday! (here he goes reacting to reactions) Yo also been playing metaphor haha, also frieren dub is so whack as someone who grew up with a germanic language. yet again, we align in our enjoyment of demons serving fire emblem ass mfers. Fire emblem tis peak. Linie is so art inspooo and ludner is such a castlevania ds midgame boss. Frieren like that dnd player who has played for years joining a campaign full of noobies and being like 'I trust yallscan kill these lvl 2 bandits' Them humans gentrified my zoltraak? Love the parallel between frieren the slayer and fern floating, she's just like her mom The animations in the fight are so chefskiss, we love fern's soviet rush tactics, quantity has a quality of it's own. They are real german words. linie's 'erfassen' is like capture or in dutch 'vastleggen' and ludner's 'Balterie' according to the sub sounds like 'bluterei' which is like bloody or the dutch 'bloederig' but originally I heard it as 'batterij' which is a dutch word for battery which I associated with a artillery battery bombarding. I mentioned it earlier in this text but it's so funny as a germanic speaker, like 'stark' itself is german for strong lol Flamme is like 'flame' kinda like the flame of knowledge Also I think it's not just that demon's wouldn't imagine someone lying about their mana but also just that demons pure narcissistic confidence is a trait of every demon.
