denken is so funny because denken literally means "thinking" in dutch

I like how the Denken vs Frieren fight went. We need to take into consideration that Denken was basing his chances to win on the mana he felt from Frieren. He thought he had about as much mana as her or close to it. BUT he knew she was more experienced and knowledgeable than him. So Denken’s plan wasn’t to fight head on, something he wasn’t confident about winning, but instead to turn the battle into one of attrition. And Denken’s ways of doing that in this episode were actually perfect. The only problem is that Frieren actually had much more mana. Here’s what Denken did after testing the water with basic offensive magic for a bit, and why he used those specific spells: 1- He created a tornado on the spot Frieren was because she was flying and that like Frieren said a bunch of episodes ago, humanity(elves included) have yet to master the fly spell. This had THREE goals: A) To make it harder for Frieren to focus on combat while trying to keep control of herself when flying. B) To block Frieren’s vision. C) Alongside goal A, to make it impossible for Frieren to be able to fly out of the tornado due to the strong winds keeping her inside. Meaning, this was the main set-up for the fire tornado that came next, so that she is forced to be in it. 2- Now that Frieren’s vision is blocked and that she is distracted, turn the tornado into a flaming one. This had one major goal. Denken didn’t even expect that Frieren wouldn’t be able to defend, so he didn’t use this for damage. THE goal was to force Frieren to use the very mana expensive modern defensive magic to protect herself from the flames coming from all sides. In other words, to make her waste a TON of mana, because the tornado is heavily implied to have lasted a while. In anime episode time, it lasted around 45 seconds, and lasted through an entire short discussion between the two exam proctors. I personally believe that the way the change in pov was done implies that it lasted longer than that, probably at least a minute. But even if not 1 minute, 45 seconds of full sphere magic barrier would have been enough to drain a HUGE percentage of the mana of a mage with the amount of mana that Frieren shows to others when she suppresses her mana. THIS is why Denken looked very surprised when he saw that the full sphere barrier was still up when the fire tornado disappeared. 3- Denken did a Fern and shot spears of light like a machine gun, while making them hit Frieren’s full sphere barrier from all sides continuously. This had two goals. A) To maintain the pressure and mainly to force Frieren to continue wasting her mana. So same strategy as the fire tornado, with the intent to make Frieren waste the little mana she should (in his mind) have left after the tornado. B) To make sure that Frieren stays on the defensive. As it is exceedingly difficult to use both full sphere defensive magic and to attack at the same time. For this, Denken thought that he was applying enough pressure that she wouldn’t be able to focus on offense, instead having to focus on maintaining the full sphere magic defense until she runs out of mana or no longer has enough mana to cover the full sphere. At which point she would need to only block the points of impacts and would be even less able to focus on offense. Denken was obviously wrong, but it is still really cool to see how well thought-out his strategy was. It only didn’t work because of Frieren suppressing her mana, since his evaluation of her mana is what he based his strategy on.
