People having "tough" discussions in the comments is actually very healthy in my opinion. You get the feeling that most, that comment here, have at least some philosophical background. But I think some of the comments have been a little too much. Equating personal experience towards a fictional story.

Part of why I read fantasy is to imagine a nicer world where the incurable is curable. Especially since his few missing fingers have had no bearing at all in his life or combat in ages. And late bloomer does NOT mean asexual. I loved how tian awkwardly dealt with ppl crushing on him while he felt nothing, as I dealt with that exact same thing. FOR YEARS. I felt cripplingly lonely but no "urges". Until I did.

I always assumed his lack of physical contact was related to trauma, for example it was huge for him when he first held hands with Liren and when he first realized he thought of Liren as beautiful(not in the sexually attractive sense). But the narrative didn't go through fixing his trauma and therefor giving him courage to slowly become more comfortable with physical touch. Instead when his body was fixed he suddenly became hyper sexual. The only line that follows is that his lack of sexuality was something that needed to be fixed, like his missing fingers. It's sort of a letdown. Going from slowly building confidence to everything all at once. We'll see how this goes.

2026-03-13 21:17:48 +0000 UTCI love it, I love Tian being able to feel everything, having his fingers, etc. I love him feeling lust for Liren and the hilarity that accompanies it. I… don’t love that a character who was effectively asexual is “fixed” and thus suddenly has a libido. I’m sure someone is going to argue with me in the comments about this. Don’t bother, just leave another comment elsewhere. I still love the story and am happy for Tian and think Warby is a phenomenal writer, I just don’t love the message here. I’m pretty positive that’s not what Warby was going for. This is just the type of thing people don’t really think about unless it affects them directly, and I’m sure this is a change that’s been planned for a while. It’s seamless and well-written. It reminds me a bit of Primal Hunter and Zogarth choosing to write one of the few (if only? at the time) gay characters as a pedophile. He ended up changing the character so they weren’t just gay, but he was pretty mad about it. In my opinion that was *so* much worse, in large part because Zogarth couldn’t understand how harmful that type of thing is. I honestly have no problem with authors making mistakes, but being unable to recognize them and getting mad at queer people for pointing them out is pretty fucked up. Whatever, again, this is extremely benign relative to that. I wouldn’t ask for anything to be changed in this story. This isn’t meant to be a “callout” comment or to cancel anyone or what the fuck ever. But I think this is worth stating, because reading that was painful. I honestly have no plans to respond to any comments on this because I’m almost certain the reader base is going to be unable to handle this criticism and come back at me, and unless you’re Warby or you are ace yourself I have no interest in it. Edit: Also, I saw that someone else commented on this, and I would like to state preemptively that a) it was only recently stated that his lack of sex drive was related to his being cursed, and no—grandpa’s comments about hormones early on are not the same thing, and b) it literally doesn’t matter anyway, because the thing about how these story-telling decisions come across is that for those of you who it doesn’t affect it seems like a one-off “why are you making this political it’s just a character in a story” thing, and for those of us it does affect it comes off as yet another example of ace==a thing to be fixed. It’s a thing in context of a whole bunch of other things, regardless of it being a single character in a single story. Edit 2: Removed some language that implied something I really did not want to imply.

Warby is absolutely brilliant at telling a story, takes a special sort of person to be able to write so intelligently with such a depth of characters and on an incredibly regular basis. The money he's making for his age is also insane and he deserves every cent.
