Gaio ch 16

Aiko moved cautiously through the damp cave, her staff ready. The air reeked of earth and rot. Ahead, Kento led the way, his mace gleaming in Akane's dim light.

A worm burst from the ground, its body writhing. Kento charged, mace raised high.

"Strength, empower our ally," Aiko chanted. A faint glow surrounded Kento, his muscles swelling.

Kento's mace smashed the worm's head. Ichor splattered the cave floor.

Akane's flames engulfed another worm, its flesh sizzling.

Aiko watched for threats, her healing magic ready to mend any wounds.

Two more worms surged from the walls. Kento roared, his enhanced swing sending one worm flying.

Akane's fire revealed more worms. "They keep coming!" she yelled, frustrated.

"Kento, left!" Aiko warned. His mace crushed the worm with a sickening crunch.

Sweat beaded on Aiko's brow. The draining magic couldn't make her falter - her friends needed her.

Akane's fire scorched another worm. "How many more?" she panted.

Kento grunted, crushing a worm. "Doesn't matter. We'll kill them all."

Aiko could feel Kento's strength starting to wane. She raised her staff once more, channeling more of her energy into the boosting spell. "Hang in there," she said, her voice soft but resolute. "We can do this."

The battle raged on around them, a symphony of cracking carapaces, sizzling flesh, and the occasional grunt of exertion from her friends. Aiko remained vigilant, her healing magic at the ready, cycling through her support spells as needed.

As they pushed deeper into the dark cave, Aiko couldn't shake a nagging feeling of unease. Something about this mission felt off, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. She shook her head, forcing herself to stay focused on the task at hand. There would be time to dwell on her doubts later. For now, they had those Earth Worms to defeat.

...

Aiko grimaced as she leaned heavily on her staff, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The last of the Earth Worms lay motionless at her feet, its segmented body twitching in its death throes. She looked around at her companions, seeing the exhausted but triumphant expressions on their faces.

Kento wiped the blood from his mace, his muscles still bulging from Aiko's enhancement spell. Akane extinguished the flames dancing at her fingertips, her robes singed and torn in places. The cave reeked of burned flesh and the acrid stench of the worms' innards.

"Good work, everyone," Aiko said, her voice hoarse from casting spells. She felt drained, her mana reserves depleted from the constant use of her support magic. But a small smile played on her lips. They had overcome the challenge together.

Footsteps echoed through the cavern, and Aiko turned to see Shinji emerge from the shadows. His bow was slung across his back, and he moved with the fluid grace of a seasoned scout. He approached Kento, a grin spreading across his face.

"The job's done," Shinji announced, clapping Kento on the shoulder. "Those worms won't be bothering anyone anymore."

Aiko's brow furrowed as she scanned the group. Something was off. Her heart rate quickened as she realized what was wrong. "Where's Riku?" she asked, her voice tinged with worry. "Wasn't he with you, Shinji?"

Shinji's grin faltered for a moment, but before he could respond, Aiko felt a sudden rush of air behind her. She started to turn, her instincts screaming danger, but she was too slow.

Aiko's world spun as a massive force slammed into her back, driving the air from her lungs. She cried out in pain as her body crumpled to the ground, her staff flying from her grasp. Dazed and gasping for breath, Aiko struggled to make sense of what had happened.

Looking up, her vision blurry, she saw Kento looming over her, his mace still raised from the strike. "K-Kento?" she managed to choke out, confusion and betrayal warring in her mind. "What are you doing?"

Kento's face, once friendly and determined, now wore a mask of cold indifference. "Sorry, Aiko," he said, his voice devoid of remorse. "It's nothing personal. Just business."

Aiko's mind reeled. This couldn't be happening. They were a team, had fought and relied on each other. And now... Her thoughts turned to Riku, and she feared the worst.

She tried to push herself up, to reach for her staff, but the pain lanced through her body. Kento had struck her with enhanced strength – her own spell used against her. The irony was not lost on Aiko as she fought to remain conscious.

"Why?" she gasped, her eyes darting between Kento, Shinji, and Akane. "We're supposed to be a team."

Akane stepped forward, her once kind face now twisted with disdain. "Oh, you poor, naive girl," she sneered. "Did you really think this was about teamwork? About being heroes?"

Shinji chuckled, the sound sending chills down Aiko's spine. "It's like Kento said. It's just business. And unfortunately for you, you're bad for business."

Aiko's mind raced, trying to piece together what was happening. Had this entire mission been a setup? And Riku... where was he? What had they done to him? Fear gripped her heart as she imagined the worst.

"Where's Riku?" she demanded, her voice stronger now despite the pain. "What have you done with him?"

Shinji's grin widened, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "Don't worry about your little friend. He's... indisposed at the moment. But don't worry, you'll be joining him soon enough."

Aiko's heart sank. Riku was in danger, and she was powerless to help him. She had trusted these people, fought alongside them, and now they had turned on her. The betrayal stung worse than her physical injuries.

Aiko's heart sank as Akane's true colors were revealed. She had never imagined the mage harbored such venom towards her. The air crackled with tension, and Aiko could feel the malice radiating from Akane.

"You know, I never liked you," Akane hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "Always acting so perfect, so kind. It makes me sick."

Aiko's eyes widened in shock. This was a side of Akane she had never seen before. "Akane, what are you talking about?" she stammered, trying to make sense of the sudden hostility.

The blow came swiftly, striking Aiko across the face and sending her reeling. The force of the strike stung her cheek, and she stumbled back, her mind racing to understand what was happening.

"You think you're so special, don't you?" Akane snarled, advancing on Aiko. "You always get the center of attention just because you're younger! I'm sick of it!"

Aiko raised her hands defensively, trying to ward off the blows as Akane continued to strike her. Each hit sent waves of pain coursing through her body, but she was too stunned to react properly. She couldn't believe that Akane, someone she had trusted, was attacking her like this.

"Akane, please," Aiko pleaded, her voice trembling. "We're supposed to be a team. Why are you doing this?"

Akane's harsh, bitter laughter echoed through the cave. "Team? You think I care about that? I only do this to see people like you fall beneath my feet!"

Aiko's vision swam as Akane's blows continued to rain down on her. She could feel her strength waning, her body growing weaker with each hit. She had to do something, had to find a way to fight back. But the shock and pain were overwhelming, making it hard to think clearly.

As Akane raised her hand for another strike, Aiko summoned what little strength she had left. She couldn't let this continue, couldn't let Akane's jealousy consume her. She had to fight back, had to protect herself. But as she tried to raise her arms, a wave of dizziness washed over her, and she felt herself falling, her world spinning out of control.

Aiko felt the pain throbbing through her body, a stark reminder of Akane's brutal assault. As her vision swam, she forced herself to stay conscious, determined to understand why this was happening. With great effort, she croaked out a single word: "Why?"

Kento's eyes met hers, and for a fleeting moment, Aiko thought she saw a glimmer of remorse. But it vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by an unwavering determination. "You want to know why, Aiko?" Kento's low, steady voice filled the dim cave. "I suppose I owe you that much. Consider it a last bit of mercy."

He crouched beside her, his massive frame blocking out the meager light. Aiko could smell the sweat and blood on him, a jarring contrast to the camaraderie they had once shared. "This hollow," Kento continued, gesturing around them, "it's not just any ordinary E-rank. There's an artifact here, something powerful. Something that could change everything for me."

Aiko's brow furrowed in confusion. "An artifact? But why... why betray us for it?"

Kento's face hardened, his voice tinged with bitterness. "You don't understand what it's like, do you? To be stuck as an E-rank hunter for years, watching others surpass you, knowing you're capable of so much more. This artifact is my chance, Aiko. My chance to finally break free from mediocrity."

He stood, pacing back and forth as he spoke. "I made a plan. Gather a team of hunters, bring them into the hollow, and... well, feed them to it. The hollow grows stronger, the artifact reveals itself, and I claim my prize. It's nothing personal, really. Just business."

Aiko felt sick to her stomach. The callous way Kento spoke of sacrificing them, of betraying their trust, was almost too much to bear. "But we're a team," she protested weakly. "We fought together, trusted each other. How could you throw that away?"

Kento's harsh, bitter laugh echoed through the cave. "Team? Trust? Those are luxuries I can't afford anymore. Not when I'm so close to achieving my goals."

He knelt down again, his face inches from Aiko's. "I've been patient, Aiko. I've played by the rules, done everything right. And where has it gotten me? Nowhere. I'm still stuck in the same place, watching others climb the ranks while I'm left behind. This artifact is my ticket out of this hell. And if I have to sacrifice a few naive hunters to get it, so be it."

Aiko's mind raced with the implications of Kento's words. How long had he been planning this betrayal? How many other innocent hunters had fallen victim to his ruthless ambitions?

"And Riku?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and disbelief. "What have you done with him?"

Kento's expression darkened, his features hardening with a cold indifference. "Shinji took care of him. Don't worry, you'll be joining him soon enough. It's a shame, really. You both had potential. But in this world, potential isn't enough. You need to be willing to do whatever it takes to succeed."

Aiko felt tears stinging her eyes, a flood of emotions – pain, fear, and overwhelming betrayal – threatening to overwhelm her. She had trusted these people, fought alongside them, and now they were going to sacrifice her for their own twisted gains.

"You won't get away with this," she said, mustering what little defiance she could in her weakened state. "Someone will find out. You'll be caught."

Kento's lips curled into a cold, mirthless smile. "By the time anyone realizes what's happened, it'll be too late. We'll be long gone, and this hollow will have claimed another set of victims. It's tragic, really. A routine mission gone wrong. These things happen all the time in our line of work."

He stood up, turning to Akane and Shinji. "Alright, let's finish this. We've wasted enough time already."

As Kento moved away, Aiko's mind raced. She had to find a way out of this, had to warn someone – anyone – of the treachery unfolding around her. But her body felt heavy, her strength sapped by Akane's assault and the weight of the betrayal she had just endured. She thought of Riku, her heart aching with the hope that he had somehow managed to escape Shinji's clutches.

Aiko lay on the cold, damp ground, her body aching from the beating she had endured. Fear gripped her as she realized this might be her final moments. Kento loomed over her, his face a mask of cold determination. Shinji and Akane flanked him, their eyes glinting with malice in the dim light.

As Kento raised his mace for what would surely be a fatal blow, a sound echoed through the cavern. Footsteps. Slow, deliberate, and growing louder with each passing second.

Aiko's breath caught in her throat. Could it be? A spark of hope ignited in her chest, though she dared not let it grow too bright. She turned her head, wincing at the pain that shot through her neck, and looked toward the source of the sound.

From the shadows emerged a figure that made Aiko's eyes widen in disbelief. It was a person clad in armor, unlike anything she had ever seen before. The design was sleek yet powerful, reminiscent of an insect's exoskeleton. But what truly caught her attention were the eyes - two fierce, glowing red orbs that pierced through the darkness.

The armored figure moved slowly, deliberately, each step echoing ominously through the cavern. Aiko could feel the tension in the air thicken as Kento, Shinji, and Akane turned to face this unexpected intruder.

"What the hell?" Shinji muttered, his hand instinctively reaching for his bow.

Kento's grip on his mace tightened, his knuckles white beneath the grime and blood. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice betraying a hint of uncertainty.

The armored figure said nothing, continuing its slow advance. Those red eyes seemed to burn with an intensity that made even Akane take a step back.

Aiko felt a mix of fear and hope as she watched the scene unfold. Who was this mysterious person? And would he be enough to stop Kento and the others?

As the armored figure drew closer, the red glow from its eyes illuminated the cave, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Aiko could see her would-be killers tense, ready for a fight. But against this unknown entity, she wondered if they stood a chance.

The footsteps stopped. The armored figure stood mere meters away from the group, its presence commanding and intimidating. For a moment, silence reigned in the cavern, broken only by the sound of dripping water and Aiko's ragged breathing.
