Seeking Your Input!

One constant since we started Know Your Enemy over five years ago has been the thoughtfulness and intelligence of you, our listeners. That should be clear if you read the comments on here, but it's even more evident in the many notes we receive personally from listeners that you don't get to see—whether they're offering sincere criticism, generous praise, recommending a book, suggesting future topics to take up, or asking us questions. We mean it when we mention during episodes or interviews how much we appreciate you, feel accountable to you, and learn from you.

As we've discussed our plans for KYE during this election year, we thought these next months would be ones when being able to "talk" to each other about what's happening and hash things out might be especially helpful. Initially, we thought Zoom calls would be the way to do this, but it's clear at this point that everyone is Zoom'd out. So what alternatives should we consider? One option we're thinking about is Discord, but we're open to other ideas. Please make suggestions in the comments below!

The Environment!! Soil, eco-fascism, etc. In my small town, the right just put agroforestry into the city charter. The dark money morphine siphoning formed nurse who lost her license now paid operative started her politics with PETA. Peter Staudermaier is good on this, but it's rich.

his eyes just tell him lies

I’d be so pumped for a KYE Discord!

Jeff

As always love the podcast, sorry I've been so behind listening to the episodes but I am catching up!

Kevin Spicer

Or a special video episode where we can get a glimpse at one of these rooftop nerd parties matt talks about!

Kevin Spicer

That would be amazing!

Kevin Spicer

Carrier pigeons with secret KYE wax letter stamp just like the old days!

Kevin Spicer

I don't know, maybe you guys could just talk about ultra obscure conservatives with names like Midge. I feel like that vein hasn't been thoroughly mined yet.

Joshua Toon

I like the idea very much. I participate in a chat group Lucid hosted by Prof Ruth Ben Ghiat and over all, it’s well worth it.

edward ripple

KYE US Tiur. Sam and Matt should hold in-person meet ups.

heater dunbat

Discord sounds like a good plan to me. Unrelatedly, I have a few suggestions for possible episodes. 1) MacIntyre, and more broadly the role that discussion about virtue, ethics, etc has both on the right and for our politics more broadly 2) Technology and the role it plays in right-wing thought, both in the Peter Thiel-esque Silicon Valley type and in the more technology-skeptical parts of the right

Zachary Roussie

I like the discord idea

Derek Baker

I’m less about the how and more about a few whats: an ability to share book recommendations (maybe even reading curricula on various topics) with other listeners, location-specific meetup info (shoutout to other DC fans), and more regular interact-with-the-hosts options for longstanding supporters. We want this to be a community!

Adam Sarvana

Discord sounds good!

Ryan Beauchamp

Agree on this tangent. It comes up occasionally but would really appreciate more chat through the relationships between the direct economic interests of industries/capitalists who fund RW movements, and the points where the superstructural elements of these movements taking on their own life past simple astroturfing or just evolving, complicates that relationship. Also e.g.'s of funders successfully/unsuccessfully trying to guide these movements/course correct them back onto the path of their interests

Toby

Two thoughts: I’d support a Discord experiment - especially because it could attract a different audience (e.g., younger, global, etc…) Don’t let perfect be the enemy of progress. Try something. Change it if it doesn’t work. We’ll still be here and give you loads of patience/grace regardless of medium because you create valuable content and community. Bonus: Like the tour idea. Also, I always thought I’d like to try a Zoom some month (if that’s still a subscription option).

Matthew Mitchell

Not clear. My memories of Discord — the name ought to be a warning— vague, but you’re suggesting a mass of supporters cram into one chat? Seems not exactly like Aristotle in his grove. Not that Zoom is any more conducive to lofty conversation, mind you.

Kent Miller

I came to KYE for the polite and smart view of politics. The hosts treat each other gently and respectfully and also treat our shared enemies as often principled and maybe deluded but never just dismissing them as simple clowns. I find Discord feeds long and boring with appointments needed and chaotic reactions from the chorus flying by. I like thoughtfully prepared and edited pods touched by Jesse that don't waste my time. I would like analysis and a smart take on what's happening but most of the daily action is temporary and should be dismissed as such. I'm interested in solutions and actions and some ideas on what we need to do after we know our enemy. I'd be happy if you would bring some authors on to talk about our more immediate enemy; the neo-liberal side of the party and how we got to where we are - tied with Trump. There is a whole new bigger enemy that is much harder to dislodge and they are running the DNC. I don't think you need hot takes on-line, the magic is in the thoughtfulness and the non-toxic approach you use with your subjects, each other, and the listener.

I would love if if you folks could add a couple of different types of features - perhaps a book club series (going through a book a few chapters at a time, similar to what 99PI is doing with the Power Broker), and maybe some extra, short episodes responding to breaking news through the election.

Garrett Amini

Selfishly want y’all to hold a closed forum on bluesky (rationalization : it might nudge some ppl of Xitter!) Tangentially: would love to hear a epi on theories of the material/economic foundations of RW power and influence. A nice balance to the rich intellectual and institutional histories you so effectively & engagingly surface. Thx!

Thomas Frazel

Definitely pro-discord - in several for other patreon endeavors and find they work quite well!

Porchrates

Do we now know our enemy well enough to recognize that it is "popular front" time? What does that mean? How does one promote it?

Thomas Holz

I like the idea of a Discord. I've never used it so I cannot speak to the technical specifics at all, just think it would be fun to have a big group chat with my fellow KYE-heads

Peter Carlen

Would love to hear about your book recommendations of someone getting started with learning about this space.

Adham Bishr

I’d love reading groups, meet ups, moderated zoom gatherings with you two or guests. I find discord a bit chaotic. Also think that a quarterly dinner or annual gathering would be worth considering. Happy to help think through those if it would help. Thanks for building such an interesting community.

Gregory Thompson

I’d be interested the Matrix option - but don’t have the know-how to make it happen. Thanks for offering!

JimJim5122

Maybe not the thought that you are looking for: Discord is great, but I think a classic forum would be nice too - mainly because a Discord isn't the best record of conversation. It is great for hanging out but it just makes conversation disorganized IMO. A forum encourages organized conversations around posts and replies and such. You can however mimic this in Discord (see https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/6208479917079-Forum-Channels-FAQ) and get the best of both worlds, but I think this only applies to certain types servers. I suppose this also depends on what you mean by talk - since you mention zoom, maybe you mean something more loose and conversational? Perhaps simple audio hangouts on discord is what you are looking for.

Theo

Discord is good. Maybe also check out Zulip, which is designed more to accomodate both real-time and not-real-time discussion.

John Huerta

Hey KYE team! I’d personally vote for discord. Based on the following link, one can protect their identity as long as they use an alt email for signup (and a VPN if they want to hide their IP too) https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/discord/. Some perks: it’s the easiest to set up and manage for the features you get and, as others have noted, it’s standard fair for organizing fan groups. You can always decide later on to do a YouTube Live or Zoom session, either of which can be easily coordinated and announced on discord too. As much as I love Signal (my colleagues and I are currently using it to help organize our workplace) it lacks the ability to have deep threaded conversations and channels. Whatever platform you choose I’ll happily volunteer to help out! If privacy is a bigger concern I can also help set up a Matrix server.

Ryan Stecher

I'd also be open to joining a Discord community. My main concern about Discord on my end – which is apart from the work of keeping a server moderated and all that – is that while it might be useful for interacting with you two, I can easily see the server not taking off because it doesn't reach a critical mass of people engaging with it. It's one thing for there to be a server, another for an active community to gather in it, particularly for general socialization. (I'm particularly thinking of the Discord server for The Dig, which is just about dead, in spite of recent attempts to revive it.)

Yulia

What about more specifically-targeted or thematic mailbag episodes?

Sean Scanlon

Clearly it should be done as a 3 act musical with you two depicting the story of the national review.

Ryeman

Discord works. It is some work though. I would recommend setting up quite a few channels to begin with.

Cleveland Leffler

I’m in favor of Discord, but I have to admit that I have no knowledge about any of the privacy or security considerations. I use it & would participate in a KYE group. The only contribution I can add, which I haven’t seen already, is that I have been a part of Discords which get extremely busy & it can become difficult to hold meaningful conversations. (Full disclosure: it’s a Discord about the Philadelphia Phillies & I think like 500 people are in it, FWIW).

Benjamin Vanston

Just figured out discord so would be interested in joining another server. However, want to upvote those who have asked for a matrix server for privacy reasons!

Samuel McCann

Some channel suggestions: Rank punditry: Current events stuff Dank punditry: The space for memes Gay Vatican Study: For books, book clubs, and other book stuff for book nerds Politics: Only pet pictures (like the Stillfleet discord) Some video/voice channels are great for things like book clubs, game nights, or other chats

Ian Derk

I also want a discord, but I *really* want that gossipy episode about the gay Vatican

Ian Derk

What happened to the monthly virtual meetings for JBS-level members? Are those still transpiring? If so, is there a schedule and/or link?

Benjamin Hippen

Discord!

Meg Young

My untutored eye tells me that there are demographic implications in choice of platforms — I have done WhatsApp and Slack (and not particularly fond of my expert in Slack), but not Discord. People may be Zoomed out, but I also suspect it may have the widest reach in terms of familiarity and experience with it. I was in a Google group that some found clunky, but it allowed for wider participation than other platforms such as Discord, when all was said and done.

Leo Casey

And we periodically do voice chat book discussions on there so it doesn’t eliminate the possibility of live audio options and engagement

Molly Grisham

I dig the Discord idea. I’m on one for the Magnificast and it is quite nice

Molly Grisham

A crosscountry tour

SPS

😆

lizzy jones

Just more frequent AMA style episodes

Tyler Paziuk

This response really deserves to be recognized. I had a good laugh at it.

Todd Bewley

Seeing as I’m nowhere near NYC… I would love a discord to pester Matt and Sam with music recs.

Andrew Sehmann

KYE meet up or reading group.

Spencer

How about a KYE cruise or like a Bravocon for KYE

Jenny Gunn

A one shot right wing drive time radioesq call in show.

R.J Pennypacker

I'm a big fan of Signal, have never used Discord but could try it I suppose. Being hopelessly olde school, I would be interested in a KYE reading group, with discussion on a Signal chat. I've read a fair number of the books referred to in show notes (notably several by Garry Wills) and would enjoy asynchronous discussion.

Jerry Callen

Discord is nice for listeners to shoot the breeze, but if y’all are wanting something more akin to streaming and synchronous engagement, I second Seth’s YouTube live recommendation.

Vincent

No Truth Social option??

Chase

Never been on a discord server but gladly would for KYE, love this idea

Reggie Debris

Is it just a platform you're looking for? I'm perfectly fine with Zoom, but heck, a YouTube live session would probably be the most user-friendly option.

Seth Crownover

I actually wouldn't hate zoom hang outs, but I'm lucky enough to mostly not have to use zoom for my professional life. A discord server would also be cool, but I understand the security / privacy concerns voiced above. I also second the comment about missing the good ol days of message boards and forums.

Chris Sardo

I would strongly prefer to meet at the Alcoves every Tuesday and Thursday, during lunchtime.

Where there’s a Wills there’s a Way

Another podcast I listen to uses something called Discourse, which is more like a BBS than Discord’s chat room style.

Jon

Discord is great but has privacy drawbacks and would require a moderator or extreme permission handling. Slack is okay, but has some security concerns. Ultimately, it's how much work and effort the podcast and our brilliant hosts want to have. Personally I'm old and miss the days of forums on the internet. Not the 4chan reddit stuff but those old fashioned postings.

Deseret Suydam

Most folks seem to use discord for this. Personally, I'm not a fan of discord for security and privacy reasons and most groups I'm part of have migrated to signal or matrix. Of course if KYE wanted a more authentic Conservative option, it could always have a Telegram channel.

Steve

I would actually love a Zoom event! But am open to discord as well. Anything that gets us talking is a win for me

Benjamin Jackson

If you had a discord that would actually get me to use it ...

Patricio Boyer

Ditto to discord! It’s a great way of fostering community among listenership, which I think would be really unique considering the ideological range in KYE heads. It’s also a great pitch to draw in new Patreon members.

Benjamin Pletcher

I'm in a ton of discords already, seems like everyone has one, but if that were a platform for live interactive events I'd definitely get good use out of it for that

John Ford

I think a discord would be an excellent idea.

William Fedullo

I think Discord is a brilliant idea, both of my kids use it extensively and I need an excuse to learn. In the gaming world it is, as you know, I'm very effective means of creating or maybe a better word is simulating a community.

mark o'hare

I'll chime in with the discord chorus

chris j

…so I think you'd need to ask what sort of feedback you want (audio? real-time dialogue? mailbag?) and go from there. Discords are popular, but in my experience they take a great deal of work and a team of volunteers to manage, just like a subreddit. My first thoughts are: 1) Zoom isn't *terrible* for interviews, but it's not great for huge calls. 2) Another mailbag would be *great*, but it's even better with a way for the community to vote on priority questions (subreddit really shines here) 3) You might even go fairly low-tech and just set up an email feedback line? 4) Maybe soliciting voicememos or unlisted YouTube videos might work for asynchronous video chat? 5) Finally, if you wanted to, you could do an old-fashioned radio-style call in show, but you'd probably need to schedule guests, and either Zoom or POTS might work.

Scott Molony

Drop the discord link! Also would be a fan of gatherings. I’d host dinner for any fans (or hosts) in Chicago!

dyke madigan

Discord or similar is great for both synchronous (live-chatting a debate or similar) and asynchronous (checking in on posts in slower channels every couple of days) contact, and you can always spin video or in-person events off from the group chat.

Mags Colvett

I'm not really opposed to a Zoom event, but I understand if enough is enough on those. Discord seems like it could be useful, then we could have a few different threads such as book talk, election discussion specifically, and maybe a resource area to put articles or content related to particular episodes.

Shane Burley

Discord is great. Do it.

Jason Albert

Would love a Discord!

Hannah

I'd join a kye discord in a heartbeat.

Andrew Rashoff

For data privacy and a slew of other reasons, I would prefer other options besides Discord. In terms of similar applications along those lines, I much prefer Slack. HOWEVER: one of the things that I like about the podcast is the audio format - so I would be in favor of some way of maintaining that aspect - but I don’t have much experience with how to do that…

JimJim5122

Huge fan of discord idea

John Mondragon

I'm so down for the discord.

CB

Yes to Discord, and yes to in-person! Long-term, perhaps we can start down the path of creating the kind of social network (in the pre-Facebook sense) that the Right seems to have down to a dismal science.

Steven Brown

I would be down for a discord. I also love a good matrix server...

Jonathan Knapp

Discord would be perfect

Chris Adams

Discord would be best, yeah.

Chance Phillips

A KYE discord would be amazing.

Jeff

A KYE discord would be great.

Clayton Flesher

I’d be all over a discord

Sam Rubinstein

I would love a KYE discord

Josiah Sutton of the Fruitless Podcast

Previously you mentioned in person gatherings for select patrons, is that something you would consider?
