Look at the thang. They’re so blinged out lol. The WEALTH!!!
So like, this scene. It was drawn while listening to All For Us by Labyrinth. That song’s got me frfr. Ok so my thoughts while drawing this.
I was thinking about how Assorra was probably so uninterested in things to do with Segun, and how that would have come off to him. Prior to this, it wasn’t that Assorra was uninterested. If anything, she was always paying very particular attention to the things that he would do, and he would feel that terrible feeling like he was constantly being watched and scrutinized. Now she was so frightfully distant. And it bothered him to no end. He’s bothered when he’s being watched, and bothered when he’s not being watched. For him, it would begin to get confusing and frustrating.
So Segun the proud, decorated and admirable prince begins to struggle with what to make of this situation. After getting over his desire to accuse Assorra of doing shady things (remember that there was a point where Assorra was also going through her own things and she even once ran away from him when he “recognized” the old Assorra’s return) he finally came to terms with the fact that he clearly didn’t really know his fiancée. He just knew what he had wanted to know about her.
At this time, she was also beginning to pull away from him as a whole. She barely engaged in the typical societal things that engaged people would do. She would skip parties in which she would have to attend with him. If she did attend, she wouldn’t even arrive with him. If she did, she wouldn’t even take his hand. If she did, she wouldn’t stick by him for long. It was so confusing for him, because despite everything, Assorra was always constantly conscious of public perception. But her she was, raising a huge middle finger to that.
The first thing Segun did to remedy this (because it was messing everything up socially AND he was genuinely just confused by what was happening) was to attempt to repair their deteriorating public image. The typical stuff, sending flowers and famous jewels and dresses and whatever. These are all things he had never done for her before. When he got no replies on wether she liked or even received the gifts (typical norm is when you receive a gift you give one back or you write to let the gift-giver know that you have received the gift), he went to deliver the gifts personally. And when he did, Assorra wasn’t even... moved. She received the gift, and then calmly asked him his opinion on dissolving their engagement.
Ok now this really made ya boi panic. He was incredibly shook. He tried to ask what was happening and why it was happening and how to stop it, and the only thing he could think to ask was “why are you doing this?” He was wondering why everything was falling apart and it wasn’t even his fault (and its true he technically didn’t really do anything other than be distant, which isn’t really grounds to break an engagement), and Assorra simply said to him, “well, there’s really no point in continuing an engagement when later down the line you’ll annul it anyway.”
Segun didn’t understand what that meant, but to Assorra, she had finally realized that either way, they would not end up together. Segun would fall in love with Ayana and their love would be passionate and pure. It was best to remove herself even way before that happened. It made sense to her, especially because she knew in her head that Segun would welcome this. So she would not lie and say that it was not a surprise when he refused vehemently. And when he, from that point onwards, would make the effort to appear as a proper fiancé should. It was so strange, to see Segun do what he was supposed to do from the beginning. Even though he was awkward with it, he was trying.
But it kinda didn’t matter to Assorra. Even though he was trying so hard now, she knew that once Ayana came, it would end. And she told him that in vague terms. That he would fall in love with someone else and end everything anyway. This bothered Segun to no end. Again, he has no idea what she’s talking abut, but the way she was so.... SURE of it made him feel even worse that when she would scrutinize him. It felt like she now knew him so well that she didnt even need to look at him to know what he would do next.
And so, feeling this incredible feeling of helplessness and futility, he did the only thing he could think of. And thus began Segun’s rebellion.
