06/04/2020- The Appointment of the Archmage

After the war with Seth’s Kingdom, Adelaide suffered extensive and serious injuries. Out of all the soldiers, her recovery was worryingly slow. Because of this, it took a very long time for her to travel back to the capital from the border.⁣

However, there was a humongous surprise waiting for her in the capital city. Her and her unit were welcomed back with pride and joy, and the welcoming feast that was held in the Royal Palace was truly splendid. She attended this not because she particularly wanted to, but had received orders from her Supreme Commander the Crown Prince of the Constantinian Kingdom (Laine. Remember him?)⁣

At the banquet, she simply spent her time sampling the exquisite foods that were prepared. Once it was permissible to leave, she would be the first one outside the door. But she couldn’t help but notice a pair of eyes on her. It was a pair she very much didn’t want to even glance in her direction. And yet they sat squarely on her. Prince Laine was staring at her with a complicated look on his face.⁣

Adelaide silently wished he was struck blind or something of the sort. Hopefully painfully.⁣

The King rose his hand, and the busting hall fell silent. “Today we celebrate our soldiers who fought bravely and fiercely to protect the great Kingdom of Constantinia. Their valor and dedication to the prosperity of the fatherland will be appropriately rewarded.” And there was a resounding cheer. In this banquet, Adelaide knew that Lichthart—the mercenary she had forcefully clung to to ensure her advancement— was to be gifted with a noble title and an office as General of the war council. She, as his assistant, would probably be rewarded handsomely too. It was what she had been waiting for for a long time.⁣

Lichthart was called forth, received his award and a round of applause and cheers, and he returned to his position. His face—which was normally very neutral and calm— looked a bit flustered. Of course he would be. And that was her signal to leave. However, before she could make it halfway through the door, the king spoke again.⁣

“And now, the Royal Family wishes to honor a soldier that performed exceptionally well in the face of terror. This soldier displayed such incredible skill and dedication to protecting the integrity of our great Kingdom, even the God of War found himself overwhelmed by their righteous and dutiful determination!”

Adelaide froze as she whipped round to stare slack-jawed at the King. All around her, the crowd buzzed with curiosity and surprise. No. No no no.

“The only reward befitting of such exceptionalism is the revered seat of the Archmage Supremus—the supreme leader of all Mages in the Kingdom of Constantinia who is directly under the command of the Royal Family. And now, I am pleased to welcome the 32nd Archmage Supremus of our glorious kingdom of Constantinia. Adelaide Harina Winslow, step forth!!”
