Aha, it is time to discuss our good sir Nicholas’ messy messy family life!!! Tldr, he has a mother and a father. His father cheated on his mother with this woman, and his mother couldn’t take it anymore and left. His father brought this woman into his house, and this woman made it clear that it is her children (Nicky’s half-siblings) that would succeed his father. Nicholas—being a more timid person— had no idea how to beat his father’s mistress in her schemes and thus moved to a coastal party town to waste away in misery.
