I asked my mother…

Oh boy I was thinking about this while making my snacks!!! The complicated relationship that Asta has with their mother!

Let’s get into it!!!

So first off… Asta’s mother doesn’t really seem to see Asta as her kid. Asta has likened their living situation to having an indifferent roommate. She doesn’t care what it is they do as long as it doesn’t cause too much trouble. Ever since Asta could remember they understood that their mother wasn’t going to do the things they’d seen other mothers do. She wasn’t gonna hug them and soothe them if they were upset. Not gonna come to parent-teacher meetings (there’s a reason for this), not gonna take them to parks to play on the weekends or go to movies. Their mother was not someone who was going to be like that.

But Asta doesn’t hate their mother. Just as their mother doesn’t hate Asta. Asta is grateful that she somehow managed to put a roof above their head and food on the table. They’re grateful that she seemed to even keep them since they can tell that she had them very young (they do not ask about who their father is, what their mother does for a living or who she was before she had them) but Asta also feels that once they’re old enough to survive on their own, they should leave their mother. They should leave her to live her life in peace.

The relationship they have is so strange. They rarely see each other since she works at night and is normally gone when Asta gets back from school, and she comes back after Asta leaves for school in the morning. Their conversations are very surface lever. Very “how was your day?” “Good. You?” “It was good.” And that’s just how it is. But of course, Asta THINKS that they’re alright with that, but no. No they aren’t. They just learned to deal with it.

I asked my mother… I asked my mother…
