I … made a shy boy! Meet Connie (short for Constantine, a name that he feels is far too grand for him)
Connie is … painfully shy and awkward and doesn’t fit in with his village. There are a lot of reasons why he doesn’t fit in. A whole host of reasons.
For one, he is an orphan. Because he didn’t have parents, kids would bully and make fun of him, cutting down his confidence.
Second, he is very… gender-neutral. Now, I try to make my fantasy worlds ignorant to the many ways that people can become marginalized. I don’t want racism in my work, don’t want homophobia. But I DO want to explore gender and the way people present/look like. And how the world reacts to that. Connie is very ambiguous-looking but Connie is a he. In a village that has gender roles for the sake of “practicality”, he is hovering.
Third—and probably the most important part— he seems to have stopped aging 💀 I know that the way he looks and acts is very much giving soft and kiddish. But he isn’t. He isn’t!! He stopped aging at 20!! And that was almost 10 years ago!! Connie is 29 and unable to look 29 or even claim to be 29 cos he doesn’t have the same experiences. Most of his peers were long married with kids, working to provide for the family. He works too. In fact, he has a very very good job. He carves designs on furniture and painting frames for nobles and his work is so intricate and pretty so he gets good money. But at 29, he feels like he’s really missed out so much. On everything.
Anyway he meets Goldwyn when Goldie came to help with the relief efforts of his tiny town that was flooded following a series of peculiar events.
