Character Vlog: Drew Softly Rants About Salt & Pepper Shakers
Added 2023-03-13 15:01:01 +0000 UTCI got a little salty about this.
Comments
When I was very young my grandparents lived with us and I remember the 3 shakers on the table - salt, pepper and paprika (he was Hungarian). It took me a bit to realize only having 2 was normal.

2025-03-02 04:08:25 +0000 UTCI think a lot of of restaurant food is over salted to start with, but I’ll say bring the shakers back because it’s convenient. I do want black pepper shakers on the tables because I like that flavor and most chef’s use spicier chili peppers for flavor. I want black pepper and Parmesan Regiano on my pasta.

2023-04-24 04:33:50 +0000 UTCMy grandfather used more and more salt as he got older he said he couldn’t taste the food flavors until he had salt. He would bring his own salt and pepper with him when he went out. It was a weird little travel kit thing from when he was a businessman in the 60s.

2023-04-24 00:31:07 +0000 UTCI don't get why salt would be a problem. The food maintains it's base flavor, it's just dialed up when salt is added. Whereas pepper actually alters the taste. Personally, I S & P the heck outta my food and if I had prior knowledge that a restaurant didn't have it on the table, I'd bring my own. Ain't nobody gonna tell me how to enjoy my food. I paid for it.

2023-04-16 23:58:56 +0000 UTCMy spouse is one of those “Put A-1 on every steak” people. Eeww, yuk! A-1 is an insult to the chef!

2023-04-15 05:32:27 +0000 UTCI drown my food in salt. Everyone has different preferences and tastebuds.

2023-04-14 02:09:28 +0000 UTCWhen chefs get too much power... Totally get this as it's extra work to bring condiments in an already hugly demanding job. I've seen customers dump salt all over their food without trying it and even request ketchup for fillet steaks! They're paying and not everyone have the same tastes. Bring back the salt n pepper!

2023-03-28 07:34:47 +0000 UTCI’m with you on that whole thing, so I worked at this one restaurant where we had like 10 total for like 30 tables. Just in case people asked. But, it was the whole chef thing.

2023-03-17 04:10:21 +0000 UTCIn general I dislike the extra clutter at the table and it seems like a good deal of extra set up for the staff. And, well, sometimes the condiments, shakers, etc don't seem super clean... I watch other diners fiddle with it all and think, eewwww. Maybe a compromise of having shakers, hot sauce, etc in the back, ready to come out at request? I appreciate cooks, but it is the customers meal after all.

2023-03-15 00:51:04 +0000 UTCSome of the biggest complaints we get on Yelp and Google reviews are that the food is unseasoned. First off, the owners are very health conscious and realize some folks can't have salt. Secondly, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE SHAKERS ON THE TABLE ARE FOR?!🤣😂🫣

2023-03-14 02:11:43 +0000 UTCOk; but if we are bringing them back, then let’s get the single use grinders. I always hated having to fill up salt and pepper shakers at the end of a shift. The salt at the bottom was probably ten years old lol!

2023-03-13 17:13:04 +0000 UTCWorked in a bistro where the chef would not prepare a hamburger past medium rare. Chef felt personally offended if you didnt want a hamburger cooked her way. Place lasted 2 years.

2023-03-13 16:10:37 +0000 UTCThere was a fancy coffee place near me, owner won top barista in the world, traveled world judging coffees. He sold $21 rare coffees, 6oz. He would not put out sweeteners, dairy to fix your drink how you liked it. Baristas took like, a bar spoon of Splenda and gave a glare. I didn’t like this. Let me enjoy my stuff the way I want.

2023-03-13 16:08:13 +0000 UTC"defend your chefs honor"… I love that! What do you think about restaurant guests bringing their own salt and pepper??🤣🤣🤣

2023-03-13 15:56:41 +0000 UTCI had this battle with Smokey Bones..yeah a BBQ joint. No salt or pepper. Lots of sauce, but no salt or pepper...ugh...

2023-03-13 15:54:34 +0000 UTCNot having them at the table is annoying, but not as annoying as the giant peppermills they have at some restaurants (mostly Italian) that are taller than and probably weigh as much as a 2 year old. Thankfully most non-fast food restaurants have gone to the grinder style shakers at the tables, so you get the benefit of fresh cracked pepper and you can control the amount salt you're adding better than you can with a shaker. I always found it annoying how some shakers looked exactly the same, but one barely dispensed any salt, and others let it cascade like Niagara Falls.

2023-03-13 15:41:34 +0000 UTCI agree with you! Not everyone's taste is the same! I rarely use extra salt because I live in Huntsville Alabama and Honey, the down home country Southern restaurants here have no problem salting our food! God Bless You and Bless your Heart! 💕

2023-03-13 15:22:20 +0000 UTCI really never thought about because at a fine dining establishment I don't want to take away from the experience. So I've never used them.

2023-03-13 15:14:34 +0000 UTCYes... Very annoying... I don't want to stick my fingers in salt during a nice restaurant experience...

2023-03-13 15:13:03 +0000 UTCMore sidework though...I don't stand up for any chef. They never stood up for me lol. Their egos could be so fragile...you know yeah bring em back...after flu season though lol.
