So about that change in fee structure...

A lot of you know this already, and I assume the rest of you will be informed by Patreon in due course, but...

Patreon is changing its fee structure and it looks like a whole Barrel Of Stupid.

How and why? Well, they explain it all in their blog post, but the gist is this: they're making you pay more of the fees instead of taking them from me. And that's...sigh.

If you leave your pledge as is, then you will have to pay more money.

If you pledge $1 it's actually a pledge of $1 + VAT in your country + fees of $0.35 + 5% or something?

IDEK you guys.

The new structure (as it stands) is going to hit the people who make lots of small pledges to creators hardest. It's also going to hit small creators who rely on lots of small pledges because people are going to drop their subscriptions or concentrate them into a smaller number of creators, which is...bad for small creators in general.

There's lots of discussion on Twitter about it, but here's the bottom line for you and me:

If you are a Patron, and this is going to make you drop your pledge, it's cool. I understand.

Suddenly paying up to 40% more on all your pledges is not good. Especially coming up to Christmas.

I appreciate every single one of you, whether you used to give or you give now or you might give in the future. (I also appreciate you even if you don't give me money, but that's not the point.)

We'll see how this all shakes out, right? But for now: you gotta do what you gotta do. And if that means fewer dollars for me then eh, so be it.

Oh, Patreon. What even are you doing.

(Yeah, I'm with Jake on this one)

ETA: Oh, and since someone asked, if you want to send a one-off amount of money, you can give via PayPal, the address to use is sursumursa@gmail.com.

No worries, man. Thanks for your support.

Thx for all you do, but I regret I cannot support the fixed fee structure.

They have actually said that they want fewer creators making more money rather than more creators making less. I mean...seriously? Sigh.

The other interesting thing I realized in all this is that the EU considers Patreon pledges a payment rendered for goods or services (I don't live in the EU so don't get assessed VAT). I would not have conceptualized it that way (I think of it more like money grandparents send grandchildren at Christmas) but on reflection I guess I see the logic and necessity.

Thanks for pointing to the blog post as I had not read that deeper justification, just the initial justification that made no sense (ie that to cover per transaction fees it was necessary to charge per pledge fees). This justification still only makes a very little sense for reasons other comments and Jake Sulyvahn suggest, but it is suggestive to see the rationale for the structure even if it is still inadequate.

Gosh darn it replies...yes, indeed, unless it’s some kind of look good for the venture capitalists thing. In which case, oh dear.

Jill Bearup

😁 Thank you, I’m sure all your other creators appreciate it as much as I do. Except Jeph, possibly. 😋

I'll keep supporting you, even with the extra fee. It's bullshit but I don't think the creators should have to pay for Patreon's mistakes. (telling this to everyone I back) (except Jeph, let him wonder)

Good lord, the problem they claim they're trying to fix is such a non-issue and the solution is so obvious and simple. I wonder if what they want to do is disperse money to their users throughout the month instead of as a lump sum in the end out of some misguided notion that people will appreciate it. But the whole point of their platform is that they simplified the management issues for people. Doing away with aggregated payments is like committing platform suicide. There is no win in this for them.

Don't even worry about it, I remember being a broke uni student too :) If you want to give a one-off donation, you can send money via PayPal (sursumursa@gmail.com). Regardless, I totally understand. I mean, I'm not quite sure what they were thinking, but...^bewildered shrugging^

Jill Bearup

I've dropped all my pledges, and am so sorry, but as a broke uni student can't afford VAT plus an extra 40% when I $1-$2 pledge as many people as I can. Do you have any other way to donate/contribute? At least until Patreon get themselves in gear and stop the multiple payments a month thing happening. (Or when I work as a real adult next year, I suppose, and can afford it)
