VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT (or VATMOSS, what the #$&@?)

SO, my beautiful darling Patrons: we have...an issue. A TAX ISSUE (DUN DUN DUUUUNNN!) Here's the TL;DR: Due to new European Union tax rules, I do not think that I can continue offering reward tiers. Which is to say, if you give me money because you want early access to episodes, I won't be doing that any more, and if you want to change your pledge amount to reflect that, I totally understand. Don't feel bad. We're cool. HOWEVER, if it's your name in the credits you're aiming for, that will now be something everyone gets. So you can give $1 or $1000 a month and you'll still get your name on Stuff You Like episodes. (Unless you prefer your total anonymity, in which case, message me!) OK? OK. If you want to go change your pledge, I'll be right here when you get back to explain this whole mess. **** Starting last month (yeah, I know, I had no idea either) the EU technically began VATMOSS, which boils down to a system for applying Value Added Tax to digital transactions. Now, technically, this shouldn't be a problem, because I use Patreon, a third party service, so they should be taking care of this. Yeah...that...does not seem to be happening. That said, they are now doing...something. Don't know what, but they have at least acknowledged the problem. In the meantime, we're in a sticky situation. And my taxes are complicated enough. SO, here is my solution: If I am not offering anything exclusive to Patrons (like early access to episodes, for example), then the money I receive is a donation, not a payment for a subscription service, and (I THINK) that means VAT does not apply. Or, to quote Catlike Coding: "You see, there's no VAT for voluntary donations. The catch is that something is only a true donation if there's no compensation. If I give you exclusive access to certain posts based on what you donate, then that's a compensation, so you're paying for a service, and suddenly there's VAT." This is pretty irritating, but until someone comes up with a workable solution, or Patreon pulls their collective finger out, it's the only course of action that seems reasonable. I'm sorry about the mess. Thank you, as always, for your support. You're wonderful. Or, to quote Abby Sciuto from NCIS: "I'm hugging you all in my mind right now."

I have no idea what the idea behind it is. Probably to stop tax dodging, which...you know, I'm generally in favour of preventing, but still. I shouldn't think access to the feed counts. Particularly since pretty much all my posts are public anyway. "I never thought the argument that I provide nothing of tangible worth to anyone could get me out of legal trouble." Truth. :)

I tried to read that VAT Moss thing and it makes utterly no sense even for a tax law. I just don't understand what the point of it was. I hope access to the feed doesn't count. That's largely why I donate, so I can keep track of what's happening to the content creator's I care about regardless of what website or projects they're working on at any given moment. As Matt Lees put it on Twitter: "I never thought the argument that I provide nothing of tangible worth to anyone could get me out of legal trouble."

Don't worry, I didn't become a patron due to the rewards. :)
