Harry Dresden Has NO TIME FOR SUBTLE

At least, not in the first book. Spoilers for Storm Front, and let me know about your favourite Dresden Files scenes!

Harry Dresden Has NO TIME FOR SUBTLE

Comments

Ok, so I'm a year late, and am now a couple books behind, but my absolute favorite scene in this series is when Thomas shows Harry the portraits that Lord Raith keeps in his house in Chicago. On the one hand, as someone who was also orphaned at a young age, this scene hits in an entirely personal way. On the other hand, it's a scene that doesn't just change the course of a book, but of an entire series. And on a third hand ala Naked Gun listening to James Marsters read it in the audiobook version just amps up all the feels.

Great analysis, I hadn't thought of the varsity scene that way before! I love the dresden files, I just started on my third? (lol lost count) reread. It's been years since I've read the books, but the most memorable scene(s) for me is Bianca's Ball. So many seeds planted with implications that ripple throughout the series.

My wife and I both love the Dresden Files. I already liked your videos (my fav is your break down of the sword fight from The Princess Bride), but this one convinced me to become a Patreon. Great job. :-)

I love the Dresden Files! Though I didn't get past the first one when I tried reading the text versions. For me, the appeal is at least 70% James Marsters' amazing narration. I could listen to him read the phone book, but he makes a truly excellent Dresden.

I always recall Harry's first clash with Cowl. His internal dialogue; is this High Noon or The Maltese Falcon ? Everyone is the hero of their own story, none more so than Harry Dresden. Also, Let the world burn = Let Molly burn . On second thought.

OK that is pretty neat. :D

Harry riding to battle on a zombie t-rex and riding over a police car on the way. When it comes to urban fantasy PI Harry Dresden and DC Peter Grant (Rivers of London) are both equal favourites and neck and neck in property damage (or as close too as makes little difference).

Stephen Turner

Another favorite quote (likely everyones'), "the building was on fire and it wasn't my fault!"

My favourite Harry Dresden quote is from Changes, "I used the knife, I saved a child, I won the war, God help me".

Matthew builds a barrier spell using a travel card and the rules of carriage for the underground ♥️

I also do like Urban Fantasy, especially the Matthew Swift books by Kate Griffin. Mathew is similarly inclined to bring overwhelmed and snarky but the books are set in London and are WONDERFULLY good at evoking a sense of place. I love my city.

I love the Dresden books, but I listen to the audiobooks rather than reading them because half of what I love about them is James Masters’ narration. (Although I made a list at one point of words he totally mispronounces in the early books!)

Entirely fair. I mean, book 4 is where it markedly improves, but it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. (Basically the only urban fantasy I like is Harry Dresden and October Daye though, so I don’t know what that tells you!)

Sounds like Jim Butcher like to write out of spite, his Furies of Calderon series was started as a bet that he couldn't do a fantasy Pokemon. I tried getting into The Dresden Files but stopped after the 3rd book, love urban fantasy but just can't get into this one.
