10 Year Anniversary!

Hello lovely Patrons! This is my super duper special (and by special I mean off topic and also over 20 minutes long) video on 15 things I've learned from ten years making videos. Technically my YouTube anniversary is in July or something, which is when I started crossposting from Blip, but...eh, April is my video making anniversary and it's been ten whole years, so.

I hope you enjoy this YouTube advice/trip down memory lane.

10 Year Anniversary!

Oooo! The Vorkosigan Saga is on my all-time favourite list. You just bumped Arenaverse up on my "To Read" list. Thanks!

🤣

I can't believe how long it's been, honestly :)

Thank you! I do love my job, and it's still kind of weird to me that it gets to be my job. But I like it.

Jill Bearup

I'm glad I...might have helped? :)

Very sensible. I don't know if you were around for the Channel Awesome years, but if so, do you remember Welshy? He made videos for years and then one day he just thought, nah, this isn't fun any more, and stopped. I always thought that was really sane of him :) (And we're still friends, and things are going well for him, and it's nice)

It has not escaped my notice that 'be concise' is one of the longest points I made :D And thank you!

That was an Excellent video! It is interesting in that it was a instructional video on how to start a YouTube channel (which runs the risk of being dry - a standard tutorial) and yet it felt so endearing, like a story. While I am not glad I broke my ankle last February, it did give me the opportunity to watch your channel chronologically consuming 10 years worth of content in a matter of a couple of weeks. I had tried the previous fall to do the same, but I had no time to really sit and do a proper binge watch. During that binge, It gave me an interesting thought in that views of yours or videos from a few hours before or days before from my perspective were actually years apart for you. It was interesting to see so much time compressed in that manner. I did notice how it seemed you fell into a comfort zone fairly quickly in the videos - you were rather shy for the first few but it wasn't too long until you had the same tone and confidence that I'd seen you have in your logical fallacies video (my introduction to your channel in July 2019). I remember thinking how you had settled into that confidence rather quickly. You did a good job in this video of capturing all the nuance of that growth that you had as a video maker. In the 20 minutes of watching this I kind of relived the fun of the two weeks of binge watching your 10 years of videos (with hours of playing Half-Life 2 and Portal 1 and Portal 2 inserted in between). Again great video. Even though I am somewhat of a late-commer to your channel (2019), it has been a joy to see your channel really blow up in the last year. There's a sense of integrity to your videos that make them a joy to watch. And as I've said many times over, there is always some very positive life lesson to take away from all of them. Congratulations, Jill. (Clearly, being concise is not my strong point)

Congrats on ten years! I think I've been following your stuff since your History of Fanfiction videos back in 2016. I'm happy that you're excited with the videos you're making these days, that's the important part. :D

This was good. Makes me rethink how I want to do my videos.

Hey, I remember Blip!

I realized watching this, that I've been following you for so many years. And it's hard to believe it been that many years.

Well, that's a solid elevator pitch for the Arenaverse books on top of being a great & fun "advice from a longtime YouTuber" segment, so thank you! Cannot stress enough the importance of doing a thing For You First & Foremost. I got through four years of making a webcomic (on time! for four solid years! never missed a scheduled post!) and I had a readership of maybe a half dozen souls at its peak. Would I have liked more engagement & feedback? HECK yes. But. I was having fun, and I stopped doing it when it stopped being fun. It's the only way to stay (relatively) sane in a creative endeavor, so far as I can tell.

Have you watched her Liaden Universe video? It has the same general vibe as the Vorkosigan Saga I think.

Gasp!! Are we getting merch!!!

Reminds me of the Epic of Gilgamesh: “Oh Gilgamesh, why do you seek life? What you seek you shall never find. For when the Gods made man, They kept immortality to themselves. Fill your belly. Day and night make merry. Let Days be full of joy. Love the child who holds your hand. Let your wife delight in your embrace. For these alone are the concerns of man.”

Anders

I will take this victory :)

I appreciate Ecclesiastes more as I get older. It's like, "well, we're all going to die, best to do good while we're here, huh?"

I read the Arenaverse series, and it was all on your recommendation. When I first started watching your stuff years ago, I went back and saw your backlog. I'm always on the lookout for new books, and I'd just finished the (at the time) final book in the Vorkosigan saga. Arena scratched some of the same itches. Just one of the pieces of media I took your word on without regret. So, re your goal to get more people to read that series, it worked at least once.

9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. 9:11 I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Anders

I do miss the board. I was quite sad when it fell to bits!

Jill Bearup

While I do honestly miss the Stuff You Like days compared to where you are now, I do understand why you changed to the current style and topics and format of the shorts and I’m happy it’s working for you. I did enjoy the reminiscence as someone who’s been watching you since the Harry Potter series of content and you’ve definitely evolved over time, though I’ll always have a soft spot for that board of differently shaded pink squares. Green screens are nice for video quality and definitely has worked well, but that board is just iconic for you personally. Here’s hoping you’re still enjoying yourself and still knocking it out for another ten years!

Sean Farron

So you're saying we should design our merch before making any videos. Gotcha!
