Red Notice (Or, How to Fight in Versace, Even More Extended Edition)

I honestly did not expect to actually like Red Notice, which is probably why I did. It was hilarious and dumb and the costumes were really, really swish. But of course, you can probably afford that kind of budget if you can also afford Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds for your Netflix movie.

Hope you enjoy this extended edition!

Perhaps a future episode could include discussion of using clothing in offensive/defensive manners in a fight? Cloak with rapier is a classic, but how about other options? Necklace with strong wire, gown train, stole or shawl, hat, etc??

Absolutely interested in more discussions about costume design from a fight-practicality perspective!

I remember a scene from Buffy (Season 5 I think) where she is at the bank trying to get a loan and has dressed up in a tube skirt and a fight breaks out and she discovers she can't kick in the tube skirt. YouTube provides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hwo3ZkLRDE

Definitely interested to hear more about costume design around fighting

Regarding MCU costumes: I have heard referenced (I think in Adam Savage videos) that they get custom silkscreening on spandex to make it look like other materials (leather, carbon fiber, canvas, etc.) so that the performers can move and be comfortable while looking like they're wearing something that would normally be stiff and unmoving.

I have added them to the blurb above us, but here they are for you! On behalf of my teenage spawn who plans on going into the theater/costume design world, we would definitely be interested in more videos about tailoring for fight scenes.

The links and such that are visible on YT are not visible here. Do you have the power to fix that?

I now kinda want to see someone make a film that subverts all of the conventions mentioned here. Outfits that aren't modified or stretchy so they're really hard to fight in and cause appropriate awkwardness, clothes and hair that are actually practical and a heroic female lead who, when it comes down to a fist-fight just pulls a gun out of her purse and shoots the attackers a-la food-poisoned Harrison Ford in Raiders.

Mark Townsend

Would love to hear the discussion of costume design.

I just LOVE costume design discussions so I'm very interested in clicking the link to that interview. Your breakdown of the logistics involved in fighting in formalwear was fascinating! And, as someone who once had quite long hair, seeing a person do the exact opposite of what any practical person would do (i.e. taking her hair DOWN before strenuous activity) appears QUITE ridiculous! Another lovely video, Jill!

Ann Brookens

Your costume design discussion would be fascinating. Thank you for another fun post.
