Spoiler Mode: Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi

I thought it would have been nice if Ackbar had been in Holdo's role. Leia had a sweet moment during the escape with Holdo, and it may have been touching to see her have that with Ackbar, who she has known since we first met Leia in the original trilogy. Then he could have rode the ship into that amazing Light Speed sequence.

(+ I'm mostly in Brad's camp on The Last Jedi. but maybe for different reasons? ... but i totally agree that it felt more like an episode of the clone wars cartoon than a real star wars movie) (and my weirdo reason that nobody else seems to be bringing up? - i love fairy tales. I was raised on Grimm's fairy tales, and have greatly enjoyed reading them to my young kids. I studied the hero myth, and worship joseph campbell's insights into universal storytelling. For me The Last Jedi was a really interesting subversive adult movie that brought in lots of interesting Japanese cinema nods - and totally shit all over the fairytale storytelling that all previous star wars movies have nailed. People crapped all over the prequels for having overly sincere delivery of sappy drama - but i forgave that because they nailed so many great fairytale story elements. I don't need the story of little red riding hood to have serious modern drama worked in. wtf? it feels like movie nerds want every movie to be more like a scorsese flick. always "more human drama." and i feel like The Last Jedi finally satisfied all those cynical voices. But i don't want to show it to my 5 year old kid. i'm not sure how old he'll need to be to handle all the messages of failure, and being careful instead of being a hotshot hero, and family and lineage being bullshit. and that is why i'm so down on The Last Jedi)

Well, i figured Snoke was definitely NOT a sith. I guess just because big pimping in your gold lamé bathrobe seems much more like a hugh hefner rich weirdo who is in it for himself, than the leader of a secret order of evil (+ there seems to be a lot of chatter now that there is some suggestion Snoke was training others separate from Kylo? is this from a book or something?). I'm thinking more of the clone wars cartoons, which setup other groups that are able to use the force (the whole force witch planet that Darth Maul came from, for example), and the big message of The Last Jedi being that the force is bigger than the jedi order (and thus arguably bigger than the sith order/thing). dunno. ... Also the rule of two seems super shaky (seems like everyone was grooming more than one sith assistant). + they established obi wan as having a love interest from the mandalorian planet in the clone wars series. + i'd argue that luke is very much NOT just a nobody from nowhere. He's a biiiiig somebody who was hidden away. This is part of a ton of fairytales, where a poor farmer/peasant finds out he's actually a secret son of royalty. For hundreds (thousands?) of years, people have enjoyed stories about a peasant finding out they are actually part of an important family. + i'd say Finn's stormtrooper backstory already echoed the jedi practice of stealing a child from his family to train him. so it's a let down that Rey is just another kid who grew up without knowing their real parents (and then finds a jedi who recognizes her natural ability but refuses to train her). but maybe the similar backstory will end up being a way to bring Rey and Finn closer together in the end.

i think these are a lot of good points. Totally agree that Snoke could come back (his whole super scarred/deformed visage suggests he came back from some bad stuff already). I think Rose feels weird to a lot of people because she's not a fairytale trope. she's more like a charming modern fan girl. but she gives Finn another "standing up for the girl" moment (getting irate about giving her rare metal yin yang pendant to DJ. although she's cool with it). and she also offers that moment where she has insight into the slave abusing ways of the super rich (which seems to be news to Finn). I think the idea is that she is the reason Finn stops being so selfish, and comes around to being willing to sacrifice himself for the Resistance group/cause. Even though she gets in the way and saves him from it. Also her line about why we fight wars was fantastic. so. i think she's great from a modern filmmaking perspective, but off-note from a classic star wars hero-myth perspective.

well, there is no rebellion in this new trilogy. there's the republic (government wiped out in last film) and the resistance (established as a splinter movement to specifically resist the first order. mostly wiped out in this film). quick google shows the opening text scroll saying "The FIRST ORDER reigns. Having decimated the peaceful Republic, Supreme Leader Snoke now deploys..." i think you got it twisted up with the rebellion of the original trilogy.

Just saw the film and felt like venting some thoughts. Just my take on a few of the more controversial parts: Snoke: Snoke's death does leave unanswered questions as to who the hell he was, but I think I'm okay with it for a couple of reasons. For one, I'm not sure that we got all that much more of an explanation of who the hell the Emperor was in the originals. In fact, he wasn't even really in a New Hope. If we are to criticize Snoke's origin story then we should also give equal criticism to the Emperor's (It's fully explained eventually in the Prequels, but not necessarily in the original trilogy). Secondly, I don't think we can necessarily 'close the book' on Snoke until Episode 9. For all we know, it was just his body that was cut in half. Perhaps he can project his image as Luke did, or cheats death by occupying husk bodies (Snoke is a decrepit old S.O.B. afterall). Or there is more to the First Order/Sith than just Snoke. Luke: Luke is portrayed as flawed, and I'm fine with that. In the original movies Luke is a pretty naive young man trying to come to grips with this powers. I still see that in old Luke. And even though he didn't jump into battle directly, he still used his immense force powers to make amends. Plus he can still pull an Obi-Wan and contribute in ghost mode. From the start, I have seen Rey as a more powerful figure than Luke was (more confident, less naive) and she showed that during her meetings with Luke when she eventually gave up to fight on her own. Hottake - I think Rey is cooler and better than Luke. Kylo: My own personal theory is that Kylo is acting as a neutral and/or an agent of chaos rather than choosing Dark or Light. Perhaps he thinks that if the force is always split into two opposing sides the war will never end, and it's better to blow it all up and restart neutrally and/or disorderly. I also suspect this may be his own misguided intent which really just results in him being blindly dark. Phasma: I get the criticism of Phasma lacking impact, or a payoff. That said, if we are to make a rough comparison to Boba Fett, can we really say Boba did all that much more? Sometimes I feel Boba Fett is overhyped just because people like his cool armor, and likewise Phasma is being overhyped as well but falling victim to expectations. Also she might not be dead, she fell and is wearing some heavy-duty armor. Finn & Rose: I like Rose as a character. However, I'm not sure why she matters to the overall narrative, and why we should be so invested in her relationship with Finn when there are more important fish to fry. I agree with the criticism here on the whole side-plot. The Narrative Arc: I like what Johnson did here. Maybe the biggest criticism of Episode VII was that it played things too safe by mirroring Episode IV. This film introduces the element of chaos that the series needed. That said, at the same time Episode VIII just left a big vacuum lore-wise that Abrams will need to fill in. I don't think we can have just a simple Rey vs. Kylo battle to end it all - there needs to be more complexity to the plot which at this point may not exist as Johnson blew it all up. Episode 9 is not writing itself, it will require much creative thought (not necessarily a bad thing).

I side primarily with Brad and Jones on all this. I had high hopes for the movie. I'm a big fan of Rian Johnson since Brick and I know he has a lot of classic cinema background, so I had hopes that he would bring something new to this movie. While the character progression was different, subverting expectations in many ways, it still was very messy. I would be interested to know how much of the final product was his and how much, if any, was due to studio "meddling". The entire Fin side story was long and unnecessary. The comedy misfired more often than it landed (though I have to admit that I kind of liked the porgs. Holdo's character could have been rewritten as Leia and have her die there. That said, almost everything that involved Kylo, Rei, and Luke was pretty good. The set piece at the beginning of the movie, the fight after Snoke, and Light Speed attack are some of the most exciting visual moments of Star Wars movies. And I did appreciate taking the plot in unexpected directions, allowing it to be very open for episode 9. I'm excited for 9 simply because I have no clue what will happen. and for what it's worth, i'd rank them: 5,4,7,3,6,8,1,2 though I haven't seen 3 or 6 in awhile

A comment on the comedy. I found that the visual/action based comedy hit very well (the scene with Hux and Kylo on the transport ship after Kylo ordered the AT-ATs to fire on luke), but all of the purely dialogue based commentary felt very flat.

I liked parts, but a major issue for me started with the text scroll at the start. 'The First Order is about to crush the rebellion.' The rebellion has had at least three major victories with A New Hope, Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, yet the bad guys continue to march on. Seeing the rebellion still barely hanging on devalues the strides they made in the previous films, which also calls into question any future victories. I was excited for the new trilogy because I thought they would move the story forward, but in many ways, it's still stuck in the same place it was when the franchise started 40 years ago.

Fun-fact about the Porgs: The reason they're in the movie is because the Puffins on Skellig Michael (The Island in ireland where they filmed Luke's scenes) are a protected species that cannot be disturbed by anyone, even if they wander into a shot or bother the crew while filming So instead of trying to digitally remove them, they actually just altered them. So a lot of the Porgs you see flying around in the background are actually Puffins that have been digitally altered.

Good stuff but alot talking over each other. You need some kind of item that the person holding it can be the only one talking and then pass it around. I haven't seen this kinda behaviour in your other podcasts maybe it's just the subject.

If he was there in person, he would've got killed immediately by the guns. The whole point was for him to stall them to buy the others time. By doing what he did, he was able to get through the gunners, and force Kylo to take his time and leave the vehicle, engage in combat, etc. Makes sense to me anyway. But I do think him not actually being there did make it a little lamer.

Thanks for doing this guys. I'm more in the side of Kyle and Huber. I liked the movie a lot... except for the ending. I'm with Brad in that part... if he is going to die anyway, why didn't he show up in person? Just like Jones, I was surprised to see Laura Dern there too. I was in media blackout so it was all a surprise. I'll have to watch it again and see if it holds up.

I loved the film. I've been a fan of Rian Johnson since Looper. He's a great genre writer yet knows just what to tweak to keep it fresh. I may be more excited for his upcoming Star Wars trilogy than episode 9, if that's possible.

I feel like there is a large disconnect between people that LOVE Star Wars and people that LOVE cinema. The fanboys seem to hate the movie because it doesn't do exactly what they want. The cinema lovers love it because it's a fantastic movie regardless of it being Star Wars or not. I fall into the Huber and Bosman category.

I absolutely loved this and I feel everyone had solid points for their views. The ONLY thing I was disappointed in that it wasn't discussed in greater detail was how the movie further fleshed out the force. Of course there was the Leia moment, which I'm personally salty about, and thankfully the final topic being Luke able to project himself, but several aspects that could have used more discussion/thoughts on: A lightsaber was torn in half. Yoda, as a ghost, is able to manipulate the force to bring down lightning Snoke's ability to bridge minds I'm also a little bummed they didn't touch on how cool it was for the audio to completely cut out during the hyperspace jump into Snoke's ship. I agree with Misters Ellis and Jones on Snoke. Even if it was as brief as discovering Rey's parentage, something, ANYTHING, about what/who he is and where he was/how he came to create the First Order is needed. Some of the humor is fine (Luke brushing his shoulder, throwing the lightsaber, Chrome Dome) but when it didn't hit, it was absolutely terrible (Hux's responses to Poe [which I understand in context of the scene, but Hux made that joke horrible], Porgs [all of them] Finally, and I'm sure they know this, but the First Order could have hyperspaced around and pinched the Resistance off.

I think the flaw of the new trilogy is that they are being written by different people. Episode7 was written by JJAbrahams and Lawrence Kasdan, and they, IMO, did an amazing job with setting up the new trilogy by introducing interesting characters and leaving so many threads open that had us asking questions for the past two years. Now Episode8, writte by Rian Johnson, seems to completely throw out alot of ideas that the fist two writers were going for. All the interesting plot points that we have been speculating on were just lazily answered and squandered with this new installment. Sure, there are AMAZING scenes in this new film, some of my favorite in the series, but as a movie that is supposed to FOLLOW the events of TheForceAwakens, it feels like it just dropped the ball. Trilogies should be written by the same person(s) for all three films, so we are able to see the original writers' story play out the way they intended it to be played out.

The fact that people have such insanely-strong opinions about the film makes it that much better that Rian Johnson flipped the typical Star Wars movie on it's head. Star Wars movies aren't meant to be academy award winners; they're decent movies with very high budgets, straightforward plots, all supported by a universe (or brand) that everyone loves. So many "real" fans being upset that someone's trying to do something with the series is very telling. Brandon thinking "I want to like this" when Leia flies back into the ship from space speaks to how nostalgia makes really bad opinions. Brad's reaction was perfect.

Spoilers Agree with Ackbar robbed of a moment, doesn't have to be the Laura Dern moment but it shouldn't also be a death that's of secondary importance to Leia's moment and we forget he's even in there until it's told to us. Agree more with Brad on this than Huber - if Phasma and Snoke sucked in TFA then it could have been TLJ to redeem the characters rather than toss them in the garbage. It wouldn't require that much screen time and there were definitely sidequests to be trimmed here.

And yea I’m more excited about 9 now because we pretty much have no idea where theyre going to go...but at the same time giving it back to JJ has me a little worried because he might go back to “his” Star Wars which is basically just rehashing/remixing the old movies.

For the people on this panel who thought it was paced poorly and never slowed down...I'm curious what movie did you even watch?! I'm blown away by this criticism. TFA was breathless and poorly paced. This movie had actual DIALOGUE between characters. Characters had time to work stuff out. This was absolutely my kind of Star Wars movie. It keeps the viewer on their toes, it's smart, it's hilarious (I think the humor will grow on people a lot. Many people groaned in my theater but I think that's more of a gut reaction to AHHHH MARBEL HUMOR, which is an unwarranted reaction on a second viewing.

You miss the point of Finn being saved and dismiss it as "plot armor." I wouldn't have been surprised at all if they killed off Finn there. This movie does weird shit! However, because he didn't, we see the culmination of Roses character, having had her sister die she's done letting people die. It makes so much sense and I HATE that the phrase "plot armor" excuses any deeper thought about it. Like, Johnson wrote the movie, he didn't have to put Finn in that position at all.

Overall I like the movie with flaws and all. I thought the Luke evolution was fitting and believable considering his known history of the Jedi. Ep8 had one crime as far as I'm concerned. (Spoiler Ahead) Ackbar was robbed of a good send off. He should have been the one to go down with the ship at the end and not some throwaway commander.

Kyle was right, the movie subverts expectations. I was expecting a good movie and what I got was Porg pandering trash. I'm half kidding, the movie was boring up until Rey entered Snoke's chamber. I agree with Brandon and Brad that some of the bigger moments fell flat because the character involved had no significance to me, the viewer. The moment where Finn is going to sacrifice himself to buy the rebels time to get reinforcements was bold. It was the most shocking part of the film, but plot armour saved him. Had he gone through with it, I think that would have had a lot more impact than anything else in the movie. I liked that Rey had loser nobody parents and that Kylo Ren and Rey weren't twins. Kyle and Huber did make me appreciate the characters we have no attachment to by making me look at them as catalysts for the main character's growth. Laura Dern's character with Poe, Snoke with Kylo Ren. After all that, I'd give the movie a B. It was a D up until Snoke's chamber, but that fight scene turned it around. Also, scrap that entire casino scene, and the Maz cameo was just awful.

Haven't seen the movie, I do not give money to Disney. But watching your video after Redlettermedia's on this movie was quite interesting :) Also to see how much less critical you are of movies than video games was quite enlightening indeed. Still very enjoyable video :)

I'm sure my feelings are similar to many others' (spoilers, obviously): I was super skeptical as the movie went on, it was losing me, but by the end I liked it. The Fin and Rose stuff felt like a dumb star trek style TV plot that went nowhere; it was fine for character development for Fin, and for giving us a (super shallow and kind of dumb) look at the evil in the galaxy outside of the obvious military conflict; but it felt like a stupid plan from the start and essentially "we need something for Fin to do during this time." It redeemed itself a little because the plan failed completely and totally. Fin accomplished literally nothing, and I actually appreciated that. If that plan had worked, it would have pissed me off to no end. The central tension for the 2nd Act seemed lame as well (oh, they're a little bit faster than you? And you can't, like, call in some other reinforcements to deal with them?) but I can buy it as example of the Hubris of the first order/Hux. Also, the Leia almost dying seemed really silly. Like, the only reason they did that was because they showed us the scene in the trailers and wanted us to believe they'd actually do it maybe? If they just needed her to be sick/weak/out of the plot for a bit, they should have had a less hokey way to do it IMO. Basically my problems are that the movie sacrificed a LOT of plot for the sake of some (maybe decent) characterization. It probably should have been able to fill it out better. Oh, also: slowest. bombers. ever. I get that it's supposed to be evocative of a WWII carpet bombing or something, but jeez. Star Wars already has way more interesting/cool bombers available to draw on.

(Movie Spoilers Ahead) I would like to state I saw the movie twice already and have read some of the Journey to Last Jedi media as well. I think that's the biggest issue here, as most of the "context" that Jones was so interested in and waiting for, is relegated to sources outside the movie. More so than in the original and prequel trilogies, were there was only marginal content revealed. (Although its the only way we found out Palpatine's first name, and the entire Doctor Aphra series starting with the 2015 Darth Vader comic is effing amazing.) For those who are interested, this includes the Phasma, Canto Bight, Leia, and Legends of Luke Skywalker books; and Captain Phasma comic. I only read the Phasma and Leia books and they greatly improve the backstories and context of Amilyn Holdo and Phasma, but I still feel like they were throwaway characters, knowing all that. There could of been so much more done with them in both movies, but I digress. The second major issue I had is the uncertainty with Snoke. Like many people, I'm still asking just who the hell was he? Obviously he was a Sith, but with the Rule of Two (only one Master and one student ever, although the Inquisitorius that was presented in Rebels kinda muddies this.), how could someone this powerful stay on the sidelines into his obvious late age and have no definitive shown influence on the previous movies/media? So then I'm assuming he must of been someone named previously and thought dead or who knows. The lack of even the hint of an confirmed valid answer bothers me, his death does not. My last major problem is the pacing of the movie. Thematically it follows the storyline of Empire pretty directly. The whole movie is basically the exodus of the Resistance (Rebels) from a base they had and was found out, then trying the escape and survive the First Order (Empire). The Jedi of the group, Rey (Luke) is for the most part on their "training planet" Ahch-to (Dagobah) where the start to expand their control of the Force and find out about the Dark Side. Then they leave before their training is complete because they feel they can save someone. There is a shiny new beautiful place Canto Bight (Bespin) and some kind of betrayal is involved with a denizen from that planet who also helps them in some way. But unlike Hoth and Bespin, I feel like Canto Bight and Crait were sped through way too quickly, not allowing the new locations to "breathe". I have a greater understanding of the two old places than the two new. From what I understand almost 30-45 minutes of deleted and extended scenes was cut out, which might of slowed the breakneck pace this movie is running at. (But this also helps out, because from what I understand a decent chunk of Leia footage was left out as well which allows her to be added to Episode IX without the need of CGI.) Some of the comedy and character interactions feel abit sudden and/or shoehorned, but that doesn't bother me so much. The revelation (if true) that Rey was really a "nobody from nowhere" follows the origin stories of most Jedi including Anakin, despite his immaculate birth. If you remember, Jedi almost exclusively lived a celibate existence so hereditary Jedi families were almost non-existant till the Skywalkers. (I missed Maz Kanata the first time too and it was no loss.) And as to the Porgs, that's just merchandising as unfortunate as it is. I still enjoyed the hell out of this movie and am extremely hyped for the next one. And while I highly recommend that you stay on media blackout for the next movie, reading the Journey to (Episode IX) books and comics has become mandatory for the enjoyment of, at least the second viewing of the movie, if not your first. May the Force be with You Allies, or just imagine Brad interpretation of General Hux if you're Dark Side :D (Sorry for the length.)

So, Rey descending into the pit. I imagine the movie before and after as this long track that has all of its visuals, sounds, themes, and most importantly, the characters that underpin those aspects by reacting and changing. This scene is on a whole other track entirely. This dark void she finds herself in has no origin, no explanation, and no place in the lore. All we have to go on is a feeling of fear, like she has to confront something dangerous down there, but we don't know what. Once she's down there, we've got this insane abstract image of her fractured self, looking to the past and the future in one go. Even when an explicit answer to a question is teased - that being "who are Rey's parents?" - it's ripped away from her, and us. Then it just ends, as though the movie had dipped into a foreign language and back again, and we're left feeling as lonely and unsatisfied as Rey herself. In my view, that empathy we feel is the reason that scene is so incredible. It's also why the rest of the movie works so well. It's why Finn and Rose's own brush with darkness in Canto Bight feels so *not* like a side-quest. It's why Snoke's manipulation of Rey and Kylo's relationship feels so cruel. It's why Kylo's revenge feels so rewarding. And it's why I admire Rian Johnson so much. He throws all of his energy into character-driven emotion, which is something that picking at plot holes can't touch, and he challenges you to do the same. It's so ballsy, and I love it.

i have had time to think about the last jedi and my thoughts are well.....very mixed on the one hand i really liked everything to do with luke. there are definitely moments in this film that i highly enjoyed but unfortunately the bad out weighed the good. For starters the humor. Humor is great but not at the expense of the characters the opening prank call to hux made one of the most powerful members of the first order a joke you know longer fear him because he is a punchline.And when Snoke dies and you realize that him and a whiny kylo are in charge suddenly your antagonists army are no longer a threat. second why the hell couldn't those star destroyers just cut off the fleeing resistance? they have light speed they could have just gone a little further ahead and then cut them off. Leia's super hero moment(you all know the one) ,mos kanada (im not sure how to spell her name) the whole finn side mission, and that is just the tip of the things i hated. Im sure there is a lot of people who loved this film but for me it was certainly disappointing. Also i believe the film should have ended with luke fading away and r2 his long loyal friend rolling up beside him and powering down for the last time as a tribute to kenny baker
