Where We're at With EZAnime
Added 2018-03-26 06:21:54 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
We briefly brought this up at the end of the Devilman EZAnime episode, but just to get everyone on the same page and to elaborate on the thought process a little bit more, we won't be doing EZAnime in the near future. It isn't that we didn't enjoy EZAnime, but I think as we're looking ahead at 2018, it's good to evaluate what we're doing and how things could be better.
We've definitely heard a call for more short form, produced content. Many allies want many different things and so it can be a lot to process, but sometimes we hear something that really resonates with us and correlates with a direction we're interested in moving. Just speaking as Ben Moore, that's a direction I want to head in as well.
I think the reason that you're not hearing more concrete plans is a) not everything has taken shape and b) I don't want to over-promise and under-deliver. It's important that we learn from our mistakes and I don't want another Tales of Japan situation. So it will take time to chip away at things and move forward.
I also want more consistency in the things we're already doing, such as Don't Skips and reviews. It will take some time to get exactly where things need to be, but that's what I'd like to work toward. To do that, we need to take a hard look at what we're doing and create some space.
If there's one thing I could ask, just please understand that this was amicably talked about as a group. No one is getting burned here. I'm not doing this against Brad's wishes and he's not doing them against mine. It's what we want.
Thanks for understanding and I look forward to the rest of 2018!

2019-02-27 13:32:01 +0000 UTCMan, first the long Gundam hiatus because Kyle is busy with Box Peek, and now this. Pretty disappointed, but you gotta do what you feel is necessary. In the meantime I'll be waiting for that Don't Skip on Trails in the Sky SC, Ben. ;)

2018-03-30 12:06:40 +0000 UTCCool Post Ben! Im not the BIG anime fan that I used to be, so it was kind of awesome catching up with anime, reminiscing, and suggestions from you all! Thank you for the transparency, and I cant wait for the future endeavors.

2018-03-28 22:08:00 +0000 UTCBummer... Anime talk is very neglected nowdays, even though there is a huge audience for that. I check other channels.

2018-03-28 20:06:48 +0000 UTCDamn, was hoping to finally get that full blown Naruto discussion. Really want to hear Huber, Ben, Brad, and Kyle wax poetic about "bonds", and maybe a little bit of "brother drama"... Maybe on FrameTrap one day?

2018-03-27 20:53:22 +0000 UTCNever watched this show so I don’t mind. Once you guys are happy and keep the main gaming stuff going it’s all good!

2018-03-27 17:22:34 +0000 UTCTotally understand. Just wish you would have done a DBZ EZAnime. That's the one I was waiting for. Thought the release of the new game would have been great timing for one. Thanks anyway! L&R

2018-03-27 02:12:24 +0000 UTCI can't help but be a little disappointed - it feels like you'd hit your stride lately, with the Devilman episode being my favourite so far. But I absolutely understand the decision, and if you find some other way to talk about the anime you've been watching (in a cut-down, edited format? kinda like a Don't Skip?), then I'd gladly gobble that up. 2018-03-27 01:48:02 +0000 UTCI like the Don't Skip anime idea, although might suffer from them being allowed to use very limited amounts of footage.

2018-03-26 19:01:27 +0000 UTCIt feels somewhat unfair for me to comment, as I’m someone who had never watched the show (I’ve just no experience with anime). While it sucks for the people who were fans, at least you still have an outlet to somewhat discuss these shows in the form of the Gundam streams etc. It sounds like an necessary evil in an aid to help production, which is probably ultimately a good thing. “Too many podcasts” was never the issue for me, but at times I’ve wondered if you guys were spreading yourselves a little too thin. Since it seems there is such demand for more short form, produced content, I do hope that if there is another show coming, that it be tied to a Patreon goal (maybe 42.5k). While I know it could be frustrating to have a show ready to go, and just have not met the goal, but on the other hand, if more short form stuff is really what people want, then it might help with converting more subs to Patrons. Also, I feel committing to another show, especially if it’s produced content, will simply land you back in the same situation you were in here. Lastly and kind of a “P.S.”, but you mention how many fans want different things, and how that can be difficult to process. I know the idea of a survey has been brought up to Jones in the past, on Cup of Jones, but maybe it’s worth suggesting again. It could be a good way to gauge general interest in the type of content people want, as well as getting feedback on the specific things you want to ask.

2018-03-26 18:59:11 +0000 UTCIMO this is probably for the best. I really only took interest in the EZAnimes that covered series I already watched, just so I could avoid spoilers for animes I haven't seen yet. Also, they tend to discuss animes on livestreams anyways, so I don't believe we'll miss out on those topics anyways.

2018-03-26 18:09:38 +0000 UTCI'm not a huge anime fan, so this doesn't bother me. Maybe anime could be covered in Don't Skip? I think finding a balance between long-form conversational stuff and short-form produced stuff is a good goal to have. Love and Respect!

2018-03-26 16:33:45 +0000 UTCSpeaking purely for myself I much prefer long form content over produced stuff. I like to see the emotion and conversation around whatever topic you are covering

2018-03-26 16:14:42 +0000 UTCI think this is for the best. For me personally, I'm a pretty big eza and anime fan, so ezanime should have been right up my alley, but I barely watched any ezanime, mainly because they were just long discussions about mainstream anime that really didn't bring much to my knowledge and appreciation of anime. I would like for you guys to still produce content related to anime, but in a different format and with a broader scope like you guys do with games.
2018-03-26 16:01:59 +0000 UTCNot as much into anime to watch an hour long podcast about it. Glad resources are being relocated ;)

2018-03-26 15:25:38 +0000 UTCI'm okay with this. To begin with, the majority of EZAnime episodes ended up being about ̶m̶a̶i̶n̶s̶t̶r̶e̶a̶m̶ shows that were already well known and covered extensively elsewhere, many of which were ̶e̶x̶c̶e̶s̶s̶i̶v̶e̶l̶y̶ long in length, so it took tons of prepwork on you guys' end to watch tons of episodes to cover them, which a huge timesink before you even account for production for the discussion and shooting of the episode. Sure, I get the community wanting to hear YALL talk about these shows since we love yall, but it always felt rather unneccesary when so many others more dedicated to the medium are out there covering it more regularly and in depth with more points of reference at their back. Rare exceptions aside, EZAnime kinda gravitated towards a show that didn't cater to people like me, but instead was good entry level for people who didn't watch much or any anime at all, so while it is sad that this gate of exposure no longer exists to show people "It's Okay to like Anime", from a personal perspective EZAnime ending doesn't affect me much. It never was the show I dreamed of back at GT, pitched tentatively as "Moon Wars", the GameTrailer's Anime / Japanese Podcast, which I always imagined as less of a deep dive into one particular show each episode and more of general group discussion of the current anime everyone was watching, which I would personally find much more value in. That said, that thing I wanted back since GameTrailers has sort of unofficially come to existence in the shape of the occasional EZA Gundam Stream, which beside the construction of these kits definitely includes casual discussion of other things the Allies have been up to, including what anime they're watching. Given the lesser importance of anime in the Allies' lives compared to video games, (I don't mean that as a slight, just a simple fact) I think the EZA Gundam Streams are more than enough of an avenue for the Allies to communicate the anime they've been enjoying and for what reasons, on top of when it randomly comes up during Tuesday night group streams, chill Twitch streams, or elsewhere. ̶G̶o̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶w̶a̶r̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶s̶e̶ ̶a̶r̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶d̶e̶m̶a̶n̶d̶s̶.̶ What I would like to see going forward is a more openness to the inclusion of anime discussion on Frame Trap, during Tuesday night group streams, and possibly even on Huber Syndrome if Huber can spend a modicum of the energy he expends watching television and movies on anime that seem interesting to him in the future. I know we can't force these things, and honestly it'd be bad to force these things, but for the Allies who already love anime as a medium and plan to watch shows anyways, just the casual inclusion of the light discussion of the content of this medium beside normal EZA activities as fun little asides and signs of normality would be the extent of my hopes for seeing anime covered here and what I feel is an appropriate reflection of the group's level of involvement with anime as a whole.

2018-03-26 15:25:38 +0000 UTCEZAnime was great but anime is time consuming. I'm honestly surprised you were able to be as consistent as you were for so long. Maybe in the future there will be time for an EZAnime that is more of an editorial format than a big long discussion. Regardless, thanks for all the episodes you made and I can't wait to see what kind of new and exciting things are being planned instead! L&R <3

2018-03-26 15:22:02 +0000 UTCSucks for anyone that was really into that show, but I hope for the best regardless. I, too, would prefer short form in some way, so I'm excited to see where this can take us.

2018-03-26 15:01:10 +0000 UTCThis is great news. I don't have enough time for all of EZAs podcasts and would love some more short-form content.

2018-03-26 14:58:01 +0000 UTCWas holding out for that Hunter x Hunter episode with Kyle.

2018-03-26 14:10:36 +0000 UTCI love EZAnime, but I respect your reasons, and look forward to more great content, however it is brought forth, Ben! Maybe we can get some short discussions on Anime you've been watching in Weekly Hunts or Frame Trap?

2018-03-26 13:24:41 +0000 UTCI like Anime but I have never watched Easy Anime. I'm sorry for everyone who liked the show but personally I appreciate your decision to focus on other things. I hope that it will be something more video game related. My dream would be a higher focus on indie games, something that was actually meant to be done with "Don't skip".
Daniel Fuchs
2018-03-26 12:45:38 +0000 UTCI think it's the right call and I respect your decision Ben. I don't know if part of the decision is because of Youtube, but it's certainly an odd beast to factor in regardless. I say that because I feel websites that hosted their own content pre-Youtube had a bit more flexibility and control. Short form content like your editorial piece on demo discs have lots of potential. If you continue down that route, I think it hits a sweet spot between passion and resonating with a lot of gamers, and expanding EZA's audience. Regardless of what you do, I'm in your corner 100%

2018-03-26 11:37:20 +0000 UTCIs there any chance at all of a future farewell Dragon Ball Super episode? A series finale to both shows!
Brandon Patton
2018-03-26 11:31:45 +0000 UTCSad to see EZAnime go. I watched a few Anime that otherwise I wouldn't have because of the show and I was excited to talk about and discuss some that I was hoping came up soon. I understand that you've got too much on your plate at the moment and won't ever begrudge trimming off things that don't necessarily seem like priorities. But I'm still sad.

2018-03-26 10:06:52 +0000 UTCAppreciate the transparency, semi new eza patron and ive been loving stuff like dont skip, would love to see more of that stuff.

2018-03-26 10:02:11 +0000 UTCMy issue with EZAnime was that it was one episode dedicated to a single anime and a lot of time it was either something I didn't care for or something I hadn't finished yet. Whatever you do in the future my only suggestion is to not do a single anime per video that way you can attract a broader audience.

2018-03-26 10:01:21 +0000 UTCGood call, trim the fat, L&R to all the AnimePeeps though.
2018-03-26 09:11:43 +0000 UTCPersonally, I couldn't really get into EZAnime because I haven't watched any of the shows you guys talk about.. I'm not a particularly big fan of Anime in general, I was a fan of the Tales from Japan though!
David Curtis
2018-03-26 09:05:46 +0000 UTCNo worries Ben. Like others said EZAnime is probably the easiest thing to cut compared to other things since you can fairly easily work similar content into Frame Trap or streams. In fact I think I would enjoy it more on Frame Trap because if and when you bring an anime up there it means you're really passionate about it.
Olf Himself
2018-03-26 08:04:51 +0000 UTCI could never hate you baby, but I love EZAnime and at least I appreciate podcast-like content of up to 12 hours per week (exactly the amount of part-time work I do ^^)
2018-03-26 07:29:32 +0000 UTCI loved EZAnime and wil miss it but if it's for the best, I have nothing against that. Have a good day! L&R
2018-03-26 07:29:18 +0000 UTCGood call, Ben. Not that EZAnime was fruitless, but if you have to pare things down, it's a good one to rule out. You can always work anime chat into Frame Trap and streams after all.

2018-03-26 07:17:55 +0000 UTCThat's too bad, hopefully you guys can get back to it some day. Still I wasn't able to watch some of the episodes because I hadn't seen the shows you guys were talking about.

2018-03-26 06:30:49 +0000 UTCKeep up the good work ben, Never felt any burn from Tales of Japan, did not know ppl got let down. Was just happy you got to go to Japan! Again looking forward to w/e you guys do, I personally could not watch a few EZAnime streams since I had not watched the anime yet.
2018-03-26 06:27:56 +0000 UTCI can honestly say that though I will be sad to see EZAnime pass into legend, I greatly look forward to the content that can fill the void left by that great show. Thanks for all the work you and Brad do to bring that stuff to fruition! L&R
