Frame Trap - Episode 52 "Ghibli Charm and Sparse Seas"

Comments

Kinda pissed - didn't want to hear more about Pacific Rim before I see it, skipped to the Caught in a Frame Trap timecode, Huber drops more details because he can't let go Now I gotta put off watching it until I forget

You're damn right World of Final Fantasy is swimming. But then again, I'm biased towards chibi Final Fantasy (thanks Theatrhythm) and I would personally give WoFF either a 8.5 or a 9

I am actually really surprised that not one of you mentioned Nier: Automata when discussing how music impacts moments in games. So many moments in that game are hugely enhanced by the music.

It's easily a stronger game, one of the best mainline in the franchise.

MBUN

@Huber If Pacific Rim: Uprising is your favorite movie of the year, then I'm guessing that you didn't see Paddington 2!

Since Ben liked Triple Deluxe, I wonder if he'd find Planet Robobot more engaging than Star Allies. I feel like Robobot is the stronger game in my opinion.

Interesting conversation on the story of Far Cry 5. I didn't share these feelings. (Small caveat: I've only completed 2 regions so far) Although the story progression feels a little formulaic and even oppressive, it seems perfect for the setting. The cult is truly an oppressive force ("Can I please just hunt/fish in peace, here?!"). It makes sense to me that the final showdown and the events leading up to it are exercised by attrition. When you finally listen to the region leader's monologue, don't buy into it, and liberate the area, it's truly a feeling of triumph. Now you can explore the region freely, kick the ass of any stragglers, do peaceful side-missions, etc. Games by design typically have systems that suppress the player either through a level-up system, key/door system, story walls, etc. I found it incredibly satisfying that the only thing really suppressing (or "oppressing") the player in Far Cry 5 was the Cult itself. Go anywhere, drive anything - even the damn perk system was open-ended for gods sake. The Cult is the only thing standing in your way! I hear the point on repetition (at least it's not the level of Mafia 3). However, I think "pulling the player out of the world" for a final showdown with the region's leader was extremely effective and right in line with the game's oppressive setting and theme.

Well said.

This is absolute madness. I really don't understand how we've gone from Battlefront 2 where everyone was upset that some players have unfair advantages over others to people asking them to add that kind of stuff to Sea of Thieves. I seriously don't understand why Huber would advocate some players having unfair advantages over others due to spending more time in the game, a grind not every player has time for. You get better in Sea of Thieves organically through practice. A Pirate Legend has learned to aim cannons better, sail ships better, fight and dodge better, do quests more efficiently, steal from other players better, etc. Just because there's not a little meter ticking up that makes them sail 1% faster doesn't mean their experience from playing more isn't directly leading to those natural skill boosts. What happened to not everything needs RPG mechanics slapped into it? What about Destiny walling it's raids away behind a boring grind is a good thing? There's so many games to play right now, so why should a player who bought a game for sixty dollars have to invest a ton of time just to earn the right to access the most fun content in the game? Sea of Thieves doesn't need to be Destiny. What's more ridiculous is that Huber has been on the Fortnite Battle Royale train lately, and that's also a game that's doing the same thing every game to grind for cosmetics, because likewise you can't earn anything from playing that upsets player balance like Huber is advocating for Sea of Thieves. So why aren't you clamoring for players in Fortnite to get better guns through playing more? You of all people should understand! "But Fortnite is free." Yes, but the cosmetics aren't, and the cosmetics you can earn in Sea of Thieves are included with the $60 you pay for the game so they're equal. They're just two different business models, and if there's not enough content that you're comfortable dropping $60 for Sea of Thieves to get it all going forward, you can instead buy the Xbox Game Pass for $10 a month to play just as much as you want. Easily worth what's there now, before accounting for all the other games you get for that $10. There's even a free trial and people are playing their fill of Sea of Thieves right now for the low, low price of nothing, which also explains why the servers have been hit with such a ridiculous load at launch. "It doesn't need to be more than it is!" So how come this philosophy applies to Pacific Rim Uprising but not Sea of Thieves? You have a beautiful game that just lets you be a pirate, something so rarely offered in video games, and the base of this is fantastic, not even close to early access games still working out the kinks. Why can't this be a game you revisit whenever you get that itch to do pirate things? You won't fall behind in gear from not playing since everything is cosmetic. They plan to supporting this game for years for players to keep returning to with friends whenever people have time for it. Yes, there's so many other games, but when you want to play this again it is going to be there waiting for you, and all you have to do is hop back in for as long as you'd like, then when it starts to feel stale again you dip back out. So why can't that just be enough? What is with all the double standards when it comes to this game? I get wanting more, but why do people seem so intent to sink this game or even worse, ruin the good things it has going for it just to make it like every other game out there? Just as Kyle Bosman proclaimed for The Final Word of the last EZA Podcast, "I don't think Sea of Thieves is a bad game."

I really liked the first Pacific Rim and wanted to watch Uprising. Rotten Tomatoes ratings don't really bug me when it comes to action flicks. What does bug me is the mediocre score on IMDB of a 6.0. Huber seems to like a LOT of things so its kind of hard to take his word for anything when he says "take my word for it" for everything lol. I hope Huber continues to love everything though, he is who he is.

I saw it in a regular theater and thought it was great. I do not have an Imax either.

Olf Himself

Everyone should play around with the Portal gun! Music in FF7. The infamous death! Or the scene with Red in Cosmo Canyon.

Huber, i'm telling you this as a big fan, i love you dude. Always labeling everything as your favorite this or best of all time that, kinda makes you loose a lot of credit if you seriously want to rep something up (Pacific Rim 2), just saying my friend. + No everybody has access to a Imax cinema.... and that should not be imperative to seeing the movie, because most people don't have an imax at house, so the only way to watch the movie correctly is for the few month in its lifetime it's on Imax ?

My favourite part of every other tuesday.
