Box Peek April Update

I promised monthly updates on Box Peek going forward, so of course this one is on the final day of April. Since the March update, I edited and premiered Episode 1, I've finished the edit on Episode 2, and Episode 3 is still kinda far from finished. I'd say 30% done. Turns out Episode 3 is pretty nuts from a production standpoint.
That means I'm officially away behind schedule. With E3 and And For That Reason coming in the next months, the dream of spring 2018 has become the harsh realization of summer 2018. Despite all this, like last month's update, I'm not feeling too discouraged.
When Episode 1 re-premieres this summer, it won't be much different from the video you can see on YouTube now. I've made tiny changes to edits or audio, but really most of the improvements will be made to future episodes. When I'm this far back, it's important to shrug my shoulders and accept something that's Good Enough. At the same time I'm also humoring my bad habit of making some parts needlessly complicated. There's one shot in Episode 2 I made by accident, and I thought Hey this looks kinda cool, and now I want to do it more often and it just takes way more time.
It's a tricky balance that I'm still not good at. The good news is that I'm generally happy with the end products and that there are parts of this show that still make me laugh.
The old plan was to get two episodes done in April and three in May and I think now it's best to hope that I can finish Episodes 3 and 4 by the end of next month. Also, while the plan was originally to bank six episodes before premiering, I'm now thinking it should be eight. We'll make the adjustment depending on whether I get better or worse at finishing episodes on time. Whatever the case, look forward to another update probably on the last day of May. Also let me know what you'd like out of these posts. I think this ran kind of long but if you'd like more in-depth production talk I can get into that too. As always, thanks for your patience

Love & Respect,
Kyle

Long posts are great, Kyle! One more for in-depth production talk! And yeah dude, production always takes longer than we anticipate! Also, remember that your "good enough" standard is "amazing" in our standards. So no matter what you do, we'll love it anyway <3

rolls even.

MizRacy

Having seen the first episode, I know it'll be worth the wait.

iconmaster

Maybe, to play devils advocate the positive reception of early episodes could be a nice confidence booster, or motivator. But you are right it could just add more pressure to work at a set pace. But either way i think the audience will be happy whenever it comes, so whatever is best for Kyle ;)

Tim Elliott

The more in depth, the better I say.

Kate Bishop

+1 for in-depth production talk

I really hope that you record some behind the scenes video/pictures to show us after the show aired. Kyle your first Episode was awesome. pmease do not stress yourself with the other nine

That famous Miyamoto quote is always helpful. :) Box Peek will be something that lives on forever and people will watch from years to come. I don't mind waiting, can't wait to see the finished version!

MarziiBarks

I'm not sure if this is actually how it works, but I would imagine that if you let E3 be your sort of "Box Peek Vacation" then that might help with the subsequent episodes? I find taking a mental break from something can be pretty invigorating, and focusing on E3 would avoid that feeling of losing productivity.

RobBobWill

Take your time Kyle. Thanks for the update and all your hard work.

LeeLore

Kyle rolls Creativity versus Doubt.

Star Tsurugi

Take your time. It's too unique for any quality being wasted because of trying to keep a schedule that is arbitrary anyway.

Take your time, Kyle! And I would release them only when all of them are finished (or close to). Thanks for the update.

Let it cook.

Kyle, only release once you finished them all. You will feel too much pressure on your shoulders for the last 2 otherwise. What you can do if you want in between are trailers, 'making ofs' (filmed and edited by Ian), mini-shows where you explain some back story of a character (like cup of Jones, nothing too fancy),... Basically what i mean is, build up that hype!

Sven Van Lathem

These posts can not be long enough, so don't worry about rambling. ;)

TurboChickenMan

Same here, until Pikmin 4 gets announced.

TurboChickenMan

The match can't start until both people have ducked into their boxes, so that both parties start with the same amount of information. Victor's line just means that Jordy popped back up immediately, but I realize it doesn't sound like that necessarily

Easy Allies

"Something that's good enough", dude, your talent is amazing. What you produce is awesome.

POKEY CLYDE

I forgot, how many episodes is it supposed to be, total?

Ian Alexander

Thanks for the update Kyle, if u have to push it back it is what it is, everyone understands this is basically a 1 person production with very little extra funding for the amount of work involved, take all the time u need

A Joker Fan

Dude I loved the pilot episode. I can't wait to see where the series goes. Just one quick suggestion if you are doing editing. Jordy is shown retreating into the box in his first match yet the script suggests that he just was peeking the whole time. You probably already caught this but I figured I would chime in anyways.. You re a great inspiration to many, don't sweat letting us down as you have alreasy done so much for a lot of us.

D.M. Deyo

Kyle, don’t sweat it so much. I loved ep 1 so take your time to get it as right as you envisioned. Thanks for the updates.

NeO JD

I'm happy for updates. When this thing was funded in the first place there was no time limit. Also, even if there was, I think people are just glad you're still working on it. I hate when I get into a series of something on the internet and the user just stops posting without giving any reason why (money, time, inspiration etc.). Just keep working on it and I'll watch it when it's ready.

GenWoofles

There's absolutely no rush as long as it is still worked on. I know I will enjoy whatever you present to us. :) I like the updates the way this one is, but if there is some way to know about the things like the accident you did in episode 2 once it actually releases that would be pretty cool. Like a commentary or some notes on each episode or something. Nothing too in-depth but maybe you could do a video on it post-release.

Yui

Definitely take all the time you need. Box Peek should be as great as it can possibly be! And I don't think anyone is too worried about it being "late". If they are, then... well, nuts to them.

keithbungle

Let it cooooooook

Let it cook!

I think the point of Box Peek is for you to make something very creative that you are happy with. Don't let us push you to put out something that is only "good enough" in your eyes. If you aren't completely happy with it, take your time and make it so it is!

MistahShowtime

Let it cook. The first episode waa so much more than I expected it would be so I'll be patient. My only gripe is that I wish I could buy a lot of the theme song because it is so amazing hearing ian and Jones doing a song together.

Daniel Mogo Sanchez

Hey Kyle, I'd definitely love more production talk in these posts. I don't think that anyone reading this is saying "man Kyle that ran long and I was forced to read it wow cut it short", I'd WAY rather hear more about the production behind this thing. In fact, I read this post and thought "it'd be cool to one day get a behind the scenes peek (heh) at how this show is put together!". I loved Episode 1 and can't wait to hear more.

Dear Kyle,

You're the fucking man.

Sincerely,
All of us

John Peterson

Someone joked about blu-ray commentary tracks, but seriously I would love a play-by-play breakdown of episodes after it's alll wrapped up. It's an easy Patreon exclusive as well.

Alec Church

Always excited to see what you're working on! I'm with everyone else in the "take your time" department. #letitcook

I love these little run downs at the end of the month and i’m totally ok with a ramble on what you felt/ the hardships of production/ making! I mirror everyone with a BTS episode/pictures but after everything is finished up and ready! I can’t wait to fall in love with these characters, kyle!!

I was literally going to comment the same thing lol

billythedoor

Let It Cook

Blade Kasper

Hey Kyle. Don't worry about the in depth details right now, it'll mean more when we can see the shots for ourselves. maybe do a writeup or make notes for a behind the scenes thing later! Some making-of stuff would be awesome

VGJunky

Not hyperbole, there is no show, video game, movie, or any other media in 2018 that I am mored hyped for than Box Peek

I think the only extra thing I could want from these updates is a few behind-the-scenes photos. Just give me something to keep my imagination flying while we wait! (But otherwise, let it cook, I'm not in a rush).

James McCoy

I approve of the more cooking and the more in depth posts. L&R

DualOrange

I would love to eventually get a deep dive behind the scenes making of. Well after the pressure of getting this finished has passed

Sarah Wampler

Keep up the solid work, Kyle.

DualOrange

Great post, Kyle. Loved the way you shared your toughts. Creative processes are fascinating. Take your time. Thanks!

Keep that baby in the oven until you smell the love and respect from down the hall! (Let it cook)... Also, I would legitimately pay for a director cut or commentary DVD lol!

Rhodesiensensical

Patron exclusive making of clip! Nothing fancy, just for example a 15 second clip of that thing you said was a mistake but ended up being good

Matt Brookbank

Yeah, I don't want a rushed Series Finale.

Eric Grynberg

Somethings are worth waiting for. Thanks for the update.

Good stuff, Kyle. I like the big texts with you commenting on the progresso of it. It's probably the most behind the scenes material we will get.

Éberson Polita

The more in-depth the post, the better.

Jon

Let it cook.

Evan

I love episode one very much so if we can expect the same quality out of the rest I am more then happy to wait, keep up the great work!

Jesse.P

let it cook

I'm stoked for the Blu Ray commentary tracks

Carlos Lopez

I don't mind you taking time if you think it'll make for a better end product. I also enjoy the long detailed updates :)

Eric Mitchell

Take your time, I can wait till next year if need be

Henry Ramirez

We had the same sentiment in mind. :P

Eric Jackson

This post is exactly what the updates should be! -Here is what you have gotten done -Here are some positives you have encountered -Here are some challenges encountered -Updated time table Stay positive! You got this!!

Let It Cook.

Olf Himself

Kyle you are my damn hero! Anything that comes out of your brain, whether it be The Final Bosman, Bosman at Home, Box Peek, or even your amazing hour comedy special, is just pure gold. Take the time you need, make another awesome thing, and then release it upon the world when you are happy with it!

Neale Genereux

You know what Miyamoto always says, “A rushed Box Peak is forever bad, but a delayed Box Peak is eventually awesome.” Take your time, set goals, and work with reckless ambition. You got this, Kyle. L&R E

Eric Jackson

Love to hear you're not getting discouraged! Don't feel like you need to rush it bud :) the premiere was legendary

Don't rush perfection. One of the things I always here you guys say to game developers is "let it cook". This advice works for you as well. I'll be happy to wait on something that was given the full attention it deserved in the creation process, rather than something rushed. L&R

Michael Stevens

Let it cook

David Schluckebier

How about a little Q&A video on Box Peak?

Mikehook1

I agree with the sentiment of waiting until all episodes are finished before the premiere. From a selfish standpoint I want it ASAP. However, I would hate to see a problem come up in putting together the last two episodes and have an anime hiatus before the ends finally reveals itself.

Spend all the time you need. Like your favorite game developer said, "...a rushed game is bad forever" 😉🤪

Mikehook1

Yes! The complicated part is that I have to make a materials release form so it's all cool legally.

Easy Allies

Posts are fine, excited for the show.

Callum MacDonald

#Getlong

Ian Patterson esquire.

I'm more excited for this than the Kanye/cudi album

Grazooka

Take your time no worries man. Will be get an update on how to submit to the show version of "and for that reason" soon?

Joseph Field

Keep working at your own pace Kyle, if you're only making one season it's best to get it spot on. I appreciate the length of these posts, it's very fulfilling to get into your headspace for these things.

Alex McMillan

Thanks for the update, Kyle. Loved the premiere, I’m sure the extra wait will be worth it. L&R

Castno

Just finish the whole thing before releasing instead of 6-8 episodes
