The Souls Retrospective - Part IV – The Old Blood

This was more of a personal episode for me because I have spent a lot of time with Bloodborne, and through it I’ve developed my admiration for the rest of this series. Despite having finished the game three times, I still gasped when I saw Brad take turns I didn’t know were possible, discovering secrets I completely missed. These games are supposed to elicit dread and hopelessness, but watching Brad play them feels like eavesdropping on two friends reminiscing about old times.

Bloodborne is a heck of a game. Its visual aesthetic is so powerful, it forced me to play a franchise I had previously tried and written off. I thought, “Even if I can’t defeat a single boss in that game, I still have to play it.” By the time I faced off against the Blood-starved Beast a second time on my new-game+ playthrough, my fears had been stripped away and I didn’t want the carnage to end.

Thank you for your patience, and for joining us again as we wrap up our Souls Retrospective, a year after it was first announced. I look forward to working with different allies to bring you even more of these projects in 2018.

Part IV will go live to the public tomorrow at 11:00 AM. Look forward to the final episode here on Patreon next Sunday, March 18th, followed by a public release the next day.

Great video ... I just started playing Bloodborne ... This video got me interested in the lore of the game

My favourite Souls retrospective episode. Well done also for summarising the lore, its not easy for this game I find! Makes me want to play the game again.

I almost feel like they should make Bloodborne part of the title to cash in on that buzz

Wait 6 months to release the Bloodborne episode, to coincide with the game being one of the Free PS+ Games of the month, that's genius!

I know right... Although I would also say this is a game that totally deserves to be paid out right in full due to how excellent it is.

I like how the timing on this is perfect, with PS+ making it free this month. See Jones, sometimes waiting pans out. Now you just need to convince the other Allies this was the idea all along.

Great retro! One slight nitpick in the writing is that sometimes it sounds like you're straying into review territory when you say things like "load times were bad between areas". I guess if you're covering it's history you can cover its technical issues but I find it breaks the flow of the script. Otherwise, I'm glad it's finally out. Bloodorne was the only game in the series I played (got to one of the last bosses and hard quit, regrettably). L&R

This retrospective is the best thing EZA have ever made (impressive work Brad!). And I want to play & experience all of Bloodborne. Knowing it’s an incredible game. But its way to hard for me. Having bought a physical copy and then later sold it again. Because I didn’t do any progress and just got frustrated. Enjoying far more to see other (better) players stream it. But at least now I have Bloodborne in my PS4 library again, by it being available on PS Plus this month. Maybe I one day will have the courage & will to try it again. Anyone else that had the same experience? Or maybe have some other advice in the matter?

Yay! The PS4 masterpiece finally gets it's time to shine within the easy allies retrospective. Great job Brad and Jones, and please keep creating such excellent short form content- as it is what I love most about you guys.

Loremasters Brad & Jones set us down next to the bonfire for another exhilarating tale!

Great video. Great series. Great game. Well done Brad and Brandon (and anyone else involved). It took ages but was worth the wait.

I don't know how we possibly made that mistake, but thank you. -Bloodworth

Easy Allies

Just in time for the PS+ inclusion of Bloodborne.

Angelo Torres

Thank you! Can not wait to watch this one.

There's a mistake at around the 5 minute mark, Bloodborne released in 2015 not 2014

Part VI: Amiibo

Oh yeah, the wait has been worth it <3

Daniel Wong

Been waiting for this. Did not disappoint :)

Neuromod

Thanks for this. I'm not a particular fan of the Souls series, but I always like the retrospectives.
