Box Peek June Update
Added 2018-07-01 10:04:43 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
I'm back for another monthly Box Peek report. June, as expected, did not allow for a lot of Box Peek time. The good news is that Episode 3 is complete and Episode 4's initial audio edit is done. The third episode was a ton of work but I think it's an improvement over the first two. The series has an established style and sense of humor at this point, so it feels pretty nice to see that one complete.
There's not much else to report, but last month many of you said it would be cool to hear more in-depth insight into the process so I figured I could tell you about the first audio layout I just did for Episode 4.
In this rough stage, a two-and-a-half minute scene with two people looks like this:

While I've applied a couple of important audio effects at this point (which is my least favorite part of the process, much respect to Sweet Justice), by the end I'll add compression and a little gain here too. A3 is used for a third character, A4 for sound effects, and A5 for music. I am not consistent about this.
I'm pretty sure common practice is to keep all dialog on the same line, but a weird and interesting part of editing Box Peek is learning how to make it sound like people who were recording alone in a booth are having a conversation. I have to tinker with timing a lot so I like to stagger the audio in a way that lets me slide them forward or backward as needed. It's a lot of trial and error, feeling out the conversation and going with what feels natural. It never feels perfect and this is something I change constantly up until the end of an edit.
If you look closely, you'll see there will sometimes be several cuts in the throughout one person's line. This is a gift and a curse of editing an animated series--I get to choose not only the best line deliveries I like but also the best parts from several deliveries. A lot of that is just cutting out extra pauses and breaths too. These are things you're a lot less flexible with when editing live action, but I guess the drawback is that it's up to you alone to create the illusion of human interaction.
This part of the process is far from final, but I really just need to roughly hear the story. I use this audio cut to make a list of all the characters, expressions, backgrounds, and props I'll have to make. Because it's all in my head anyway, these lists are actually more helpful than storyboards, which I really just use to try to figure out how to compose a unique shot. Typically we're at 45-50 character drawings per episode, though I keep telling myself that will decrease as I go on. Jordy can only make so many faces right? Also this early stage is a good time to identify if I need any pickups due to audio quality or something not working story-wise. While Episode 2 needed a bunch of pickups, 3 was just one joke swap and it looks like 4 needs one extra line just to clarify an inconsistent (and tiny) story thing that I realized doesn't make sense.
Onto the business side, last month I talked about some sort of compromise I'll have to make to get Box Peek done in a reasonable time. Before I do anything I'm going to see how July goes. So far it looks pretty clear. If Episode 4 isn't wrapped with 5 underway by the end of this month, it will probably be time to enact one of the alternate plans. Currently I'm thinking about a Plan B and a Plan F. Plan B is to start rolling out episodes monthly. I think this is a bad idea for the show's momentum and assures its unpopularity, but at the same time this is a Patreon-funded program and I would at least be delivering Box Peek consistently. Plan F is adopting a new, simpler animation style. It's my worst nightmare and I don't want to talk to about it (but I am thinking about it). Let's all hope it doesn't come to that. I understand the virtues of Let It Cook but also Box Peek frankly isn't a good enough show to take two years to make. If this is high art, yeah, take all the time in the world. Paint a chapel. But you know, I'm making Yu-Gi-Oh with paper.
That said, after genuinely enjoying how Episode 3 turned out, Yu-Gi-Oh with paper is pretty cool. I'll be back here to give you a new Box Peek update at the end of July! Until then, thanks again for your patience and support.
Love & Respect,
Kyle

There's a chance that you haven't yet discovered the Great Secret of Clip Placement for Dialogue, without which it is impossible to master the Ancient Art of Thai Ming: • in the wave edit window, set an anchor point in the next clip to be inserted / appended to the dialogue • run the transport over the preceding clips, listening hard with all your Thai Ming summoned, and hit stop at the point you want the anchor point of the new clip to hit • drop the new clip anywhere on the timeline, then (making sure the new clip is the only thing selected) use the fundamentally useful but little-vaunted "pickup clock" function to shift it to exactly the right place My hope that this will be new information to you, that it will thus accelerate and significantly joyfulise the Box Peek creation process, is considerably encouraged by the fact that you currently appear to be comping audio in a video editor. Much love from London. Let it cook.

2018-07-09 23:11:16 +0000 UTCHello Kyle Bosman! My name is Sean, I've enjoyed your work since your first ever video for Gametrailers. Please take your time and understand that people only want to watch what you're happy with, too. Don't rush or stress yourself. I write and perform for a living and have sometimes tried to write big projects that halfway through, I've struggled to finish because it's just so hard to imagine anyone giving a shit- but when something is good and creative and fun- people will! You will make people's lives happier with every Boxpeak you make- even if it doesn't go viral or whatever. I support you, and so many of these patrons do too. Best of luck with it.
See You When I Get There
2018-07-06 13:48:12 +0000 UTCYu-Gi-Oh! is really popular though, and Yu-Gi-Oh! with paper could just as well become as popular. Better start production on real boxes to sell at Target :)

2018-07-03 05:38:29 +0000 UTCWe love you Kyle. I can see the merit in staggering the episodes or just waiting till more are done. In the end I think you should make your choice based on what will make you look back on this in the best light. I'm sure that huge creatice projects are stressful no matter what but if putting it out piecemeal doesn't feel quite right then I am prepared to let it cook. L&r

2018-07-03 04:59:55 +0000 UTCJust to be clear, Sweet Justice has no involvement and in fact would probably be appalled by my methods. I just gain a greater appreciation for good audio when struggling through my own

2018-07-03 01:06:52 +0000 UTCThe first episode was really good. My two daughters (2 and 4 years old) loved it and ran around singing the theme song for a week afterwards. I would be very happy (and I am sure my daughters would be as well) if the rest of the episodes' quality was close to the first episode. However, this is your life and your show. If this is putting too much stress on you I would support your decision to do whatever you need to do for your health and mental well-being. Even if you just think its taking too much of your life and its not really stressing you I would not be mad. Whatever you choose to do with the show, I am not dropping my patreon pledge. I made the pledge when Easy Allies started because I really enjoyed most of what GT put out, not because of the promise of Box Peek.

2018-07-02 17:18:24 +0000 UTCAs someone who's helped fund the show, let it cook. Don't even enact plan B. I want it to have the best possible chance of becoming popular!
2018-07-02 17:16:03 +0000 UTCLet it cook, we must avoid plan B, try as much as you can to re-use the papercuts you already made, if the script is ready don't think just about episode 4 but also what kind of actions the characters will do in the next ones: say a character gets an eyepatch (don't ask why), if you're done with their current models just draw an eyepatch on them and do as many scenes as possible, so that you minimize time consumption, lower the ammount of work for the next episodes and get a cleaner environment. I know these are basic advices but it only goes to show how much I care for this project

2018-07-02 15:54:47 +0000 UTCDon't compromise on what you want the show to be because you're worried about us. I can guarantee if there are people giving you a hard time they are simply a vocal minority and don't understand how much work it requires to put together something like this. Most of us are in full support of you letting it cook. From what you've shown us so far I personally think it is a good enough show to take as long as you need it to. Thank you for keeping us in the know by the way! I find these behind the scenes looks super interesting :)
2018-07-02 15:29:59 +0000 UTCI definitely prefer Plan B to Plan F, for what it's worth.

2018-07-02 14:49:43 +0000 UTCSomeone else suggested it above, but the idea of releasing 5 episodes and then maybe having a mid-season break seems like a good one, and I certainly like it more than Plan B or F to be honest with you. You could wait until you were nearly finished with episode 7 or 8, and then release one episode a week, for 5 weeks. Hopefully by the time those 5 episodes had ended, you would have a better idea how long it will take you to finish the season, and could adjust the length of the mid-season break accordingly. Like everyone else, I’m not really fussed about how long we have to wait. I’d rather you just be happy with the thing you’re making.

2018-07-02 12:49:24 +0000 UTCHey Kyle. As a fellow artist, don’t let the pressure of releasing this show compromise your vision. We all want to see the best version of this show, regardless of how long it takes, so please don’t adopt a new, simpler style just to get it out faster. Let it cook. We all have faith in you.

2018-07-02 06:08:50 +0000 UTCHey Klye you might not read this as you need to focus on Box Peek :), but I would even suggest release it to Patreon fan as finished and if and when you finally finish maybe you can release the playlist to YouTube. 2018-07-01 23:37:21 +0000 UTCKyle: please, under no circumstances, ever, compromise regarding production quality. Plan B would be fine with me, though. Alternatively, what about working with a mid-season break? You could finish the first half of the season and release the pertaining episodes weekly - then take a longer mid-season break, use the time to get most of the second half of the season done - and release it in another weekly rhythm a few months later. Could be a good compromise between allowing for solid weekly momentum and not pushing the actual start of the season too far out.

2018-07-01 20:52:05 +0000 UTCDude. Take all the time you need and keep going with Plan A. If it takes two years, it takes two years. Give this show the best opportunity to be everything it can be. I understand that this being a crowd-funded project adds so much extra pressure to you, so of course, go with your gut, but I wanted to put it out there that while I love the pilot and I'm super stoked for the final product, I would prefer to watch them as close together as possible. Keep up the good work and do everything you can to keep those stress levels down. L&R
2018-07-01 20:36:10 +0000 UTCAs much as I want Gundam Streams back ASAP, don't do Plan F.

2018-07-01 20:02:07 +0000 UTCTake your time with the project. The thing with creative projects.. it is always like this, As we say "design never ends", what pushes us to finish projects usually is the deadlines (with the clients), also I enjoy the project crunch-time as it increases the progress and efficiency as long as you have a plans or in your case episodes you already wrote. Increasing the efficiency will help you meet the next deadline faster with each new episode you start working on as long as you are in the zone (not taking long breaks from the project). Don't compromise your vision and if you think you are a perfectionist try to overcome it in the right way. a point that may or may not help, many people like to focus on one kind of tasks, in your case you are the only one working on the project (writing, animating, editing..etc) which can be distracting for some and the longer the time between sessions or edits the less efficient it become. Instead, You can work on one kind of tasks (recording audio, animating, editing..etc) for multiple episodes at the same time instead of working on episode by episode basis. You already did 3 episodes so you may already have the right scope of work and experience to do multiple episodes. Good luck.

2018-07-01 20:00:54 +0000 UTCLet it Cook! Please don't do Plan F, I'd rather wait way longer than have you sacrifice the animation.
2018-07-01 19:38:03 +0000 UTCI think that people are into Netflix these days so releasing it when it's done sounds good to me. They would just get mad about the wait in between anyway, and like you said it would be less popular. Only you can know if you want to do Plan F, personally I'm still fine with Plan A
VGJunky
2018-07-01 19:36:05 +0000 UTCPlan B sounds reasonable to me. Just sayin'! A lot of people saying they're fine with waiting for it, but if Kyle doesn't want to spend 2 years of his life on one project which was supposed to be modest in ambition, that's understandable.
2018-07-01 19:05:43 +0000 UTCI think people underestimate how long it takes to animate, even in a case like this where there is a lot of blending of techniques to slightly simplify the process. It is incredibly labor and time intensive and aside from the voice acting all the work is being done by one person in his spare time. Personally, I am totally fine with Box Peek taking as long as it needs, it is something extremely unique and I trust that, if nothing else, Box Peek will be an experience. So I say let it cook :)
Brittany Fuller
2018-07-01 18:47:25 +0000 UTCUnderstandable concerns, but don't sell yourself short by saying it's not worth a long production cycle. From what I understand, it's just you working on this project which is crazy for an animation like this (especially on top of other duties). That said, I'm sure there are some concessions you can make. Not saying go full on plan F but find the things you should pull back on and save that energy for scenes that really matter. And I know it can be hard since it's such a tightly packed show that has a great flow (from what we've seen in episode 1). This is just one take, there are a lot of good opinions in the comments here. From one artist to another, trust your gut here.
2018-07-01 18:18:29 +0000 UTCHi Kyle :) Wanted to say that I hope you don't feel that you need to resort to plan F at any point. The animation for Box Peek is so incredibly unique and endearing, seeing that go would be a good shame. I was just rewatching episode 1 last night and the scene where Jordy's box transforms, the lid hits his head and his face changes...i don't know, it really puts awe in me, how you can do so much with just some paper. You give it so much life, and to see that go away would be really sad. Especially since you sound like that's something you really don't want to do if you don't have to. I don't think any of us want to see Box Peek if it's not as close to Your vision as possible, even if we don't get it til next year. At least, I won't. I don't mind waiting one bit. Even if it was 2 years ;) Yu-Gi-Oh with paper is pretty damn cool. So, yeah. Thank you for your updates- learning about how you do the audio was really interesting. Good luck with the upcoming episodes, we're all cheering for you and we know Box Peek will be great, and as everyone else has said- please let it cook :) <3
2018-07-01 18:12:58 +0000 UTCI think you knew b that we'd all say this Kyle... But just in case it's not clear- please, let it cook! It's amazing to see something like this come to life and to know the process/struggles... We are all so invested not in just seeing the show but having it be something you can look back on with pride. That's part of what I like about EZA, it's not all about "content", it's also about watching you guys become better at your crafts and expanding what your crafts even are! I love what I've seen from box peek already and if you believe that you're making it better then I am even more excited. tl;dr thank you for including us in this journey... Don't try to cut it short!

2018-07-01 17:24:43 +0000 UTC"Box Peek frankly isn't a good enough show to take two years to make" Kyle, Dude, you've gotta stop being so hard on yourself. You might not think it's "high art" but creating stuff takes time. We've all had a taste. It's great that you've given yourself a goal of having another episode done by the end of July but instead of forcing yourself to do that , why not just see how long it takes to make another one ? Then, if you look at that and go "oh that took like 7 weeks instead of 4 weeks so making more episodes will be similar". If you have to work away at this until the end of this calendar year and drop a binge level season early 2019 ? so be it. Don't go to plan F.
RJC
2018-07-01 17:23:41 +0000 UTCAll i want to say Kyle is that "High Art" doesnt exist. And your passion project that takes influence from pokemon and yugioh is no less important than a high budget drama on HBO. There are moments and scenes from those older anime that are unbelievably creative as well as emotional. From the first episode of box peak im already in love with the direction you put into the world and I can already see some fun and awesome places the story and battles can go. Dont be too down on yourself. Box Peak is creative and interesting and you made it. Take your time and be proud is my only advice :)
2018-07-01 17:15:48 +0000 UTCI'm more than happy to wait longer for a finished product, Kyle :D
2018-07-01 17:15:02 +0000 UTCStick to your vision! It might take more time and you might doubt yourself while you do it, but I know that you’ll be super proud of the end result once you’re finally done with it :)

2018-07-01 16:56:03 +0000 UTCPlease Kyle! I know you feel the pressure because it's patreon-funded! I know you're in the middle of the process riddled with doubts and fears, wondering if it's even any good! I know that! But please, please take you're time and don't rush it and don't make any compromises! You will regret it later! 2018-07-01 16:41:02 +0000 UTCLet it cook! Going with plan B or F will probably make it easier to complete the project, but it will ultimately stray away from the vision you initially started with. Your perspective is important as well. If you were to look back on your project, you wouldn't want to see it as a lesser version of what you had in mind and the original idea not coming to fruition. Be happy with what you make, and I bet you that everyone else will be excited with what you got!
2018-07-01 16:35:31 +0000 UTCSomeone else suggested that you do a midseason finale of sorts. Get half the season done, release those episodes once a week like you planned but take that month off to give yourself some time to recooperate and focus on other things. Once that month is over I bet you will be energized and ready to get back to work on your project.

2018-07-01 15:39:27 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed reading this. I'm sure you feel a lot of pressure, but add my vote to plan A. Not that this is a democracy. You're a benevolent Creator-Tyrant to whom I offer my firstfruits, and gladly. If you're like me, you'll kinda hate almost everything you publish. That said, I'm gonna enjoy what you're at least halfway happy with. I see Patreon as a way to support people, not content. But--and this is a major but--don't feel like you have to turn out something perfect. Working in publishing, I've known some writers and illustrators we gave infinite time to work on something, and they crushed themselves with their own expectations. It took an editor to pick them back up and patch the material together. TL;DR---Nurture your mental health first. Care for you, man. L&R, --Cloisterance

The overwhelming majority of us have no concerns as to when it comes out, just that it does, and in the uncompromised way you wanted. TLDR: option F sucks, don’t do that 2. Although I feel most every patron wants option A, if you personally are feeling burned out creatively from this process, in a way you feel may hinder the shows quality, option B will allow you receive a dopamine rush of positive feedback, which make get the creative juices flowing again. 2018-07-01 14:40:02 +0000 UTCI'd rather you not put it out altogether then put out a show that you hate.
2018-07-01 14:39:03 +0000 UTCDon't compromise the quality. Animation takes long, and you're a single person with total creative control. Rick and Morty with a team of writers and animators can't churn out a season in the time frame you're working in, and that's their job. This is your first go at it, you got to leave a little leeway for the learning process. I'd settle for a release every month, but honestly, I really want this to be an event. Something on our minds every week, in the zeitgeist, drawing attention to Easy Allies, continued momentum week to week. Waiting a month would make those who stumble upon the show lose interest, but the fans who are eagerly anticipating Box Peek, we'll be invested no matter what. So I'd say just consider that, consider the people who aren't fans yet but will be. Those of us who are fans, we can wait.

2018-07-01 14:04:23 +0000 UTCHey man, this is an insanely impressive labor of love. Animated, written, and edited by one person, and partly voiced. Personally, I'm ok with waiting as long as it needs to cook, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

2018-07-01 13:57:59 +0000 UTCTake your time Kyle and never enact plan F. A little audio tip (not as essential since you record VO in an audio booth), you can record ambient sound (even of a "silent" room) and lay it on a track along your dialogue tracks. You'll give it more cohesiveness and will help make feel more "natural", like both characters are in the same space. L&R!

2018-07-01 13:50:03 +0000 UTCAgain, just take the rest of the year for it. End of discussion.

2018-07-01 13:44:25 +0000 UTCKyle the amount of work you're putting into this is quite incredible. thanks for the look behind the scenes. As far as I'm concerned take all the time you need.

2018-07-01 13:35:24 +0000 UTCBox peek makes the sistine chapel weep. Let it cook!
2018-07-01 13:28:28 +0000 UTCWell, I’m sure you wouldn’t have any trouble getting an army of interns to help if you were really desperate.

2018-07-01 13:23:06 +0000 UTCWhen I watched the pilot episode of Box Peek, a crazy thing happened. I no longer felt pain, and had no fear in my heart anymore. If you enact Plan F, the pain will return. Please Bosman, think of all of us who were touched by Box Peek. We can't live in a world where the truest form of Box Peek does not exist
2018-07-01 13:21:45 +0000 UTCThanks for the update and the behind the scenes looks at what it takes to make Box Peek. I'm starting an audio drama and have no idea what I'm doing so this was super useful to me.

2018-07-01 13:02:39 +0000 UTCThanks for the upfate Kyle. From my limited personal experience, things like this always take way more time than expected, and some compromises are always part of big projects. But, don't ship a product you are unhappy with, we want your vision. So I guess I'm in let it cook camp. Thanks for all your hard work!
2018-07-01 12:18:36 +0000 UTCThere is not a single person here that would want you to compromise on your art style.

2018-07-01 12:14:20 +0000 UTCLet. It. Cook.
2018-07-01 11:44:57 +0000 UTCI feel box peek is something special and I do not mind the wait. The animation and feel of episode 1 is fantastic. I am in the "Let it Cook" camp on this one.

2018-07-01 11:37:38 +0000 UTCPersonally I am fine with it taking a long time and just showing us all the episodes when you are ready.

2018-07-01 11:35:27 +0000 UTCThanks for the detailed update and peek into the post production process !!! SO cool to hear Sweet Justice was involved in giving you advice on SFX and compression. Whatever choice you'll make at the end of the month I'll be 100% supporting it !!! L&R

2018-07-01 11:34:40 +0000 UTCThanks for this update, Kyle. And thanks for putting so much work and effort in Yu-gi-oh with paper.

2018-07-01 11:28:56 +0000 UTC"Not a good enough show"? The half dozen random non gamers I've shown who loved it beg to differ. Let it cook dude, its a treasure.

2018-07-01 11:21:57 +0000 UTCLet it cooooook
2018-07-01 11:09:45 +0000 UTCI'm okay with box peek taking time, but please Kyle, appear on the next Fiasconauts, I really miss you on that show.

2018-07-01 10:55:45 +0000 UTCKyle you should see the behind the scenes of Resident Evil Revelations 2 and see just how efficient a "crude cut" is where you put something together just to get a sense of the whole.

2018-07-01 10:53:27 +0000 UTCI agree with both Kyle and people here. If you want Kyle just take the time making this work the way you want. The preview got me on-board and I don't think anyone would mind waiting. So if you want to do it right then do it. However, if you feel Box Peek it taking more of your time than you feel it should than I get that, and do what you must! In short, if the decision is made to please the fans then don't worry, we'll wait. But if the decision is made to make things better for yourself, then do it for yourself :-)
2018-07-01 10:50:51 +0000 UTCKyle please please please let it cook. I don't care how long it takes, I just want to see what you want to make.
2018-07-01 10:50:33 +0000 UTCKyle literally the only thing I don’t want is for you to start releasing it on a set schedule before it’s all done. Miss as many streams as you want, because the streams you’ll have after you’ve made something you’re proud of will undoubtedly be happier and better as a result, and the fans will recognise this. Love ya Bossy, I trust in your comedic eye <3
Mr M
2018-07-01 10:42:27 +0000 UTCI have no problem with waiting. You're still doing other work, you're there every week for the podcast, the group tournaments and your Twitch streams. We can understand you have other commitments.
Steve
2018-07-01 10:41:15 +0000 UTCLove & Respect Kyle, I'd rather wait than go to Plan B/F
Brandon Ray
2018-07-01 10:38:29 +0000 UTCI'm fine with waiting if it means everyone is more satisfied with the final product. Having seen the pilot episode, I think patrons in general are more patient now, anyway. That's definitely the case for me.
balladofthegoddess
2018-07-01 10:34:53 +0000 UTCYou could always tweak the end of the middle episode to make it a mid season cliffhanger.. then release that batch with a “Box Peek will return in Fall 2018” end credit. If Mad Men and Game of Thrones can divide seasons up and release the second half up to a year later for production reasons.. I think Box Peek can ride that wave. We’d have a bunch of eps to absorb, rewatch and anticipate the second half.

2018-07-01 10:21:08 +0000 UTCWould rather wait two years for your best work than have a product that feels rushed at the end. Take your time and enjoy yourself!

2018-07-01 10:16:13 +0000 UTCPlan A would probably be just get it done normally, but what were plans C D and E?
Matt Brookbank
2018-07-01 10:15:58 +0000 UTCI'm sure it's worth the wait! Appreciate the work you put in, and the communication of the process. L&R
2018-07-01 10:11:34 +0000 UTCI say stay the course and don’t release anything until they’re all done and can be released weekly w/o any stress. I don’t see the need to rush or adjust the quality. And as a viewer and patron I’d like to wait until it can support a weekly release schedule
Greg Kettering
2018-07-01 10:10:42 +0000 UTCKeep up the hard work, Kyle! Can’t wait to see the finished product. L&R!
