Friend Code: Why Smash Ultimate is Not Melee

Comments

I'm still holding out hope that Nintendo's big online exclusive will be the revival of the Satellaview!

Me too. Despite Brawl's criticism, I did play that one more than Smash 4. I didn't replay the Subspace Emissary but did play a lot of the boss rush mode, and the trophy minigame. in-between regular matches. I think Smash 4 was affected do to the split with the 3DS since IMO the 3DS version had a better single player mode with Smash Run, and the way Classic mode was in 3DS felt better. Also the stages may have been better in that many of them feel like they were made for 4 people in mind instead of 8. Event match needs a Doc Brown spider monster, it needs to be crazier, like have one just surviving a horde of assist trophies, or one in which the stage transitions faster and the goal is mainly surviving.

Yeah, I did have the same experience as Blood where I played wiiU smash very little compared to other smash games, This new one needs fun practice modes like target smash and a good single player mode, that is a joy to go threw over and over. This time I am going digital even though it's 16gb, I have a feeling it's going to be one of my go too multiplayer games, wish I went digital on mario kart since all I ever do is swap out games to play mario kart.

I have to say I agree with the comments Sakurai made regarding smash. Just make it like the more player friendly party type game he & Nintendo want it to be & don't worry about the tournament scene. They will find what they need to make it make it a competitive game all on their own. It happened with the 1st Smash & it will happen with this one. Either way you'll still have people who only want to play the version they play now & that will never change.

It seems Blood read my mind

It's not just Nintendo, Arc Systems and SNK are also making casual easy entry games by simplifying mechanics. Capcom despite catering more heavily to hardcore players has had issues managing the content of their games.

I'm thinking the mentioned games still coming for the Fall 2018 Lineup will all be related to the coming online service. Hell, they could just be more NES ones or the MIA SNES ones mentioned in the past with added online element, and technically it wouldn't be a lie for them to say that is "more on the way". Or it could be Yoshi, but please don't be Yoshi. Delay that game until it is actually good.

Third Strike was (still is) a very difficult game, yes, and it definitely contributed to its poor commercial performance. However, the bigger reason it did poorly is because it lacked all the Street Fighter characters people came to love, coming off of SFII's success. Many people hopped on SFIII hoping to play some Cammy, Guile, Sagat, etc., only to find out that none of those characters are in the game. Capcom grossly underestimated just how attached people were to their characters.

Sakurai's comments on Melee are revisionist and ridiculous tbh. That game was huge with casual players! I had no idea any of the advanced techniques even existed back then, and loved the game all the same. That's why his insistence on catering the game towards the masses by simplifying mechanics to a degree makes no sense to me. He could literally make Smash Ultimate the most technically advanced game in the series, and it would go completely over the heads of anyone who wasn't looking for it, while also giving the game the best chance to take off as an eSport.

They have that exact green tea here in Tokyo!
