So regarding keeping the show exclusive or not, I've never been a big believer in pay-walled content; early access, sure, but I'm not a subscriber to here and on Twitch because I want exclusive content, I'm a subscriber because I love what you guys do, and want you to keep doing it. It doesn't bother me if some people only watch your stuff for free, or if I'm effectively paying for them to do-so, in fact I'd pay more if I could; I think that having your stuff out there for free is crucial to getting it to as many people as possible. Plus, And For That Reason is an ideal format for enticing people onto the channel; the short run time means anyone can give it a try, which might lead them to check out other short videos before sinking time into one of the streams (live or recorded). So yeah, my vote is on limited exclusivity.

Maybe put together a public teaser trailer for the show, with some snippets/highlights from the 6 episodes, so potential patreon supporters can get a sense of what they're missing. (i feel like the episodes are so varied, just putting one up free wouldn't convey it). ... but i also like the idea of keeping it private until season 2 begins. that way the first season going public becomes an ad for the emerging (and private) season 2. This trick works on me in netflix town. many shows will put all their episodes up on a streaming service so you can catch up. which drives hype for their brand new season (that is exclusively released on their network).

With regards to making the exclusive series public, I don't think you should keep to a standardized time before releasing publicly. That method might lead to a bunch of people just saying 'ah I can wait [3 months/6 months/a year] and then I'll be getting all the shows at a regular clip as if they were new!' A netflix style approach where you release season 1 to hype people up for season 2 might work better. Might even be worth looking into some of the features twitch has for premiering videos if you want to try and drive some more of your audience that way (I'm not sure what the split is for EZA on YT vs. Twitch), before ultimately making it public on YT as part of some 3-stage master plan.

Fantastic series. If you're comfortable with it, make it public. The reason I pledge is to support the Allies and to see them grow. While exclusivity is nice, eventually releasing the Patron only videos allows more eyes on your fantastic content. If it means even 3 more patrons by listing an already developed show, then why not? Of course there are many factors that I am simplifying and probably overlooking, but this is just one patron's humble opinion. I'm sure you will make a logical choice either way. L&R -Steven

However after reading through some of the comments I have to agree with those saying release the first episode as a little taste. Like others I feel like you guys deserve so much for all that awesome content and good vibes you spread. Also I'm so down with shows like these having yearly seasons, the wait builds hype, and we all love some juicy hype, right?

This has been great, thanks so much for putting it together. And I'm incredibly pumped to hear that there are other ideas for shows, I can't wait to see them! As far as going public, my unhelpful opinion is that the decision should be based on whichever option will maximize Patreon pledges since that would theoretically give you more freedom to make more weird stuff. I have no idea which option that is though! :) The other related thought I had was if you were 100% sure you weren't doing another season (which it sounds like is not the case), then I think it would be cool to somehow release all of the unused pitches. Of course if you thought you would want to return to it then I could see wanting to save them for later. Hopefully that ended up being a readable mess of a thought.

If a season 2 of "And for that reason" rolls around, leading up to it maybe make the episodes public one by one, build hype for the second season, get people pledging at a dollar to see the new season. But if a second season isn't happening, then they should stay private. You can watch all 6 episodes any month in the future for just a dollar. If you set the precedent that "All you have to do is wait long enough" to get access to exclusive shows, you're devaluing the incentive to pledge.

This episode is so good!! This whole series was great guys! I'm also on the camp that it should go public! My main motivation for being a patron is to see you guys do what you love and this show makes me super proud to be part of it. As far as the public release goes, I don't mind releasing it as soon as you want. If I could chime in on the how, I love how you guys premiere new episodes at the group streams. You guys could premiere each episode a week on the stream and make them available for the public right after. That way you could potentially get as much exposure as you can for each one! This series is one of my favorites (and not just because I'm in it haha) because it shows how creative and unique you guys are from most channels out there, and it shows how connected you are to your own community. Hi Kyle and fellow allies, I have 2 comments to make: Firstly, in response to the above, I think the exclusive shows should stay exclusive. The Spoiler Modes become outdated due to their very nature so releasing them at a much later date seems fruitless. And For That Reason has been a delight to watch and I think, because of its inception and development from a Podcast bit to fully fledged series, it has a certain warm fuzziness to it that is enhanced by its exclusivity. My second and more important point: Did someone say Christmas Special? I think an AFTR Christmas Special could be one of the greatest things on this Earth. Let's not forget that when the only exclusive content was CoJ, patron numbers were not moving at all past the lower 6k. Early access to shows were not moving the needle then too. I'm okay with making exclusive content public but please think carefully about how you will implement this. I am a patient person. If I am going to get the show at some point in the near future for free, I don't mind waiting at all.

Hey Kyle! I think it would have been a good idea to make the first episode public when it came out, as this would have shown what Non-Patrons are missing out on. Get them hooked first, then monetize them like a true evil corporate overlord ;-) Overall I really enjoyed the show a lot btw., but I also think it's a great idea to come up with a different show each quarter to keep people interested and offer something fresh and bite-sized every now and then. If they're only coming every quarter, I would be fine with releasing it weekly, after the next show is done "airing." You'd get six weeks of new, followed by six weeks of reruns, then six new, and so on.

I suggest taking the same approach as Blizzard with World of Warcraft expansions. When (and if) season 2 premiers, only then will season 1 go public. That way the general YouTube fan base can get drawn in by season 1, get hooked on the show, and will have no choice but to fork over that $1.00+ to see season 2.

It would be cool to have a 10-15 second promo at the front for the new exclusive series too. Might not really be feasible with your schedules, but it would certainly do wonders for awareness. These should be public after a certain amount of time. I've never been a fan of keeping any kind of show behind a patreon paywall for any prolonged period of time, not everyone that likes a youtuber can afford to even give them a dollar a month sometimes or maybe they just didn't know about them at the time and trying to dig through their exclusive content months or even years later is a massive inconvenience compared to just having them up on their youtube channel, and I mean let's be frank the links leak out anyway so I think it's best to do it kinda like the podcast, but maybe with a longer lead-in time (say a month or so from series completion) instead of just keeping it private forever.

Also, I agree with the idea of making these shows public a quarter later, as the next patreon timed exclusive reveals itself to us here. People still like these bits, even if they can't chip in at the moment, and it could encourage people to start peeling back the curtain - you can't entice someone to peek if you don't lift the skirt a bit.

I'm sorry but the caterpillar reference was *too* hard for me to even remotely enjoy. I get no good vibes from what that film tries to do - like I'd give it a 0/100. So I couldn't enjoy that, in fact I felt sick by the end. Hah. Not the sort of content I come to EZA for, but, oh well.

I think the best one was the 5th episode, because it went crazy pretty quickly. I'm not sure this is a concept that you can spread on several seasons though because you were already retreading the same kind of jokes, and using the same "You wanna make money, come with me" deal every episode, and that part was becoming a bit repetitive. It was a nice experiment and pretty fun, but not the best you can do in my opinion. I think once you have a Studio, you'll be able to do much more with those kind of projects. Still, I had a really good time for the most part with the series, it just seems like the concept or format isn't good enough for it to become as great as Gametrailer's bits. I'd love to see something in the vein of Mandatory Update though, once you get that studio (crossin fingers).

I have a question: you say that your sad so many people submitted videos that barely got seen. Would it be possible to stitch together all of the unused pitches into one video and upload that? So that way we all get to see the videos and the people who went through the trouble of submitting a video get there video shown to the public as a participation prize of sorts. I liked the news of a new limited run every quarter. As you said, if you decide to do a second season, let it rest for the year is a good idea; and maybe at that moment release the old episodes, so that non-patreons have a taste of what is at the other side of the paywall. I really think that the shows should go public as the next exclusive show starts airing. It ensures new patrons some exclusive content for their pledge (the whole point). Also, you can promote the new exclusive show in the AFTR description which might help bring in new patrons.

I definitely think you should release at least some of the exclusive content after some time. Maybe not the full season. Do it as a regular promo thing, maybe during anniversary celebrations, maybe around easy living, etc. Periodically give people a taste of premium content, but in a focused way. GB is a good example of releasing a few eps of their various premium shows once in awhile to entice signups.

I don't care much on a personal level whether it stays private or not. I will say though that Giant Bomb sees some value in keeping content permanently locked behind a pay wall. Maybe that is a smart move to add value to the patreon. Great series by the way.

Wait till the 1st episode of next series, whatever that may be. Then let it go public, 1 per week, add a quick summary of what Easy Allies is about, and a good in your face pitch for Patreon at the beginning of each show. See if there is a noticeable effect on number of Patreons. If there is not, then just keep it for Patreons only going forward unless you make something you really believe will bring in Patreons. Basically, just use it as a test to see if attracts new Patreons but make sure there is another series of something ready in case new people come in so that they have something new and different to look forward to each week.

It's definitely possible to create an audio export, but since it's a short format show that is highly visually dependent, I don't think it's worth it unless the demand is very high. I hate to put stuff in the RSS feed that people didn't ask for

That was okay. Critique that could apply to new shows; - I'm not sure what your writing process was for this series and how much was improv, some episodes are way tighter than others, but I just wanted to say the moments where Kyle breaks are still fun to see. - Avoid moving the cameraman around. Casting a shadow on the screen is never great. I'd say the cameraman should be level with the characters on screen and not 'looking down' on them, just looks off. One set position for the camera and pans from that one spot + snap zooms. - Make full use of a greenscreen for the next one. It'll change the vibe dramatically for a new show plus if it doesn't look super great that'll just be hilarious too. - Crank the bonus bits up to 10. Interview characters with fake confessional cams. Give it a separate story arc. Get betting special characters in there, just go nuts.

Once the next quarterly series releases on Patreon, release the previous quarter’s first episode publicly. Put a promo at the end saying “Join Patreon to see the full season of X Show today! As well as our new show starting this month, Y Show”. I really think it would help convert the YouTube audience who doesn’t know what they’re missing, as well as keep things exclusive enough for existing Patrons that they don’t feel cheated.

I feel like you could build up a nice library out of these exclusive shows eventually. That would become a great thing to advertise, that this and this kind of line-up is behind the paywall. Of course you'd need to give the bigger audience a small sample every now and then that they'd know what's waiting in here. I don't think these should go public. At least not after only a month, that's honestly nothing, people will just wait. Especially as these shows will propably not focus too tightly on current topics, like podcasts, for example. At least this show is pretty timeless.

How about making at least a single pilot/teaser episode available publicly (to garner wider interest and incentivize patreon subscriptions) - with the rest of the series staying patreon exclusive? This way, they could basically build up a playlist with "appetizers" for patreon exclusive content on the EZA YouTube channel (without making everything public).

It's tough but I say make them public eventually. Based on comments I've seen, there's a decent number of GT/EZA fans that demand more "short-form" content over podcasts, and if you can show them what you're capable of, I think there's a chance of them voting with their wallets for more of that kind of stuff. Also this stuff is so good that I feel kinda bad more people don't get to see it. I understand and support having Patreon exclusive shows, but I wonder if instead making more short-term, short-form shows as a funding goal (similar to Box Peek) would work better for everyone.

Mini series like this have a huge potential to go viral and expand the EZA viewership. The more people watch EZA videos, the more will eventually become patrons. Great series so far. I'm down for both a second season or new content. If the drive and passion are there, I'll love to watch it. I'm pretty sure other members of the community feel the same way as I do. As for going public or not, I say go for it only if it does not add any significant work on the allies. I'm all for sharing entertaining content, but if it's clearly not worth the hassle then by all means keep it exclusive on Patreon. The best decision is whatever choice the nine allies are comfortable with making. Either way, keep up the good work. Love and Respect.

I think you should make them public eventually. Like, in a couple of months or so. Semi-related: Spoiler Mode shouldn't be Patreon exclusive at all imo. People actively search for spoiler talks of new movies and games and it's a shame they can't find the ones from you guys. Shows like that could bring in so many new fans, but not if they're hidden behind a paywall.

Loved the series, hope to see it return eventually. As for exclusivity I would always release the first episode of a new show for everybody to get a taste, but I truly think exclusivity is a great incentive to pledge and building a library for new subscribers to dive into is also nice. Of course you could always release it eventually, maybe for the next quarter but really check the numbers to see if it leads to growth. Or make it a special event to have great content when some of you are on vacation during the holidays or the summer.

I think it would make sense to release an old short series publicly every time a new short series finishes. So it could be delayed by one or two or more quarters, and the public viewers would have multiple seasons to dig in on if they like it enough to patron up

It could go public at the same time that the new season or show begins for the patrons. That way everyone gets a new episode at the same time, but patrons will also have the pleasure of an older to rewatch. Everybody gets something and no one is left behind, in a way.

Public, a month from now, release them all one ep a day and state in the first line of the description that the next episode is releasing to the public “tomorrow”. Abuse dat algorithm so it shows up on everyone’s home page for a whole week and a half if they watch one of the episodes babay.

I liked Kyle's reasoning the best this time. :] I think this should remain an exclusive show here in Patreon, this neat and peculiar thing of its own. You guys have enough other shows and material in general out there. I'd wait 12 months as well and then see what we/I feel like about Season 2. At that point there could be something even way better that we only want to see more of, or then we'll be missing this show.

Quarterly shows sound amazing. I think, give it till next year, seeing as you have ideas. It could be like season 2. I do think that they should eventually go public, especially something this good. Maybe when the next quarterly show starts, post the first three episodes and in the next quarter, post the following three. My feeling is that the current season of a show, should be a Patreon exclusive, once a new season launches the previous season(s) should then be made available for all. This keeps the content exclusive for a period, but also will entice new people to potentially contribute to see the new season (since they will have had the opportunity to get a taste of the previous seasons). This of course does revolve around there being a reasonable lead time between the seasons of a show. If season 1 immediately leads into season 2 then there's no real value there.

Id like them to stay on patreon since it could get lots of people to sign up especially in the future when there are multiple exclusive shows to choose from. New show each quarter is a great idea imo!
