Frame Trap - Episode 60 "Octo Love"

Comments

It's not like that, I'm 45 hours in and only have 4 characters, as long as you understand the battle system and pay attention to your skills and items you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Ben saying Octopath demands for you to use every job/class/character for some bosses makes me worry it's gonna be a Bravely Default situation. Which is, at one point, you're punished if you didn't work on some of the jobs cause they make you fight every boss again with way harder fights based on attack types and elements. Hope it's not that way, I hate it when a JRPG asks you to play a certain way. Same goes for Ni No Kuni 2 which demands for you to do a number of sidequests to reach the end (which I didn't reach because of that, sidequest are soooo boring in ni no kuni 2)

With a title like "Octo love", you'd think they would talk about the Octo Expansion from Splatoon 2 lol

Karl Williams

I have tried playing Batman Arkham and City and just cant get into it. I have the same issue with the Witcher 3. Those are the only two games I really wish I could get into but I just cant.

Id change the title "octo love" to "octopath love" . The octo just sounds too lewd.

You're still caught in the frame trap

Octopath is fun, unlike most jrpgs trash like Shining Resonance which is JRPG: the nutshell

I absolute love Octopath and it's mostly because the sum of its parts. The game is just fantastically beautiful. Not just in its artstyle, but in how it's presented. For me, it's akin to watching a play on a grand stage, unfolding with each chapter in each character's stories. And while it may not be for most, the separate stories has me invested on each unique tale, with their own quirks and quality to it. The gameplay is engaging and offers various strategies in how to conquer enemies. Along with each character's distinct talents, it never leaves me bored in its progression. Those are just some of my reasons but hopefully that explains a little bit of why it's lauded by people.

I don't understand the praise for Octopath Traveler, this game is subpar at best. The dissonance between the gameplay and stories, the low quality of the writing, and the reasons for having a party are basically non existent which all amount to a subpar game.

I think Ben vocalized the majority of his thoughts around releasing the Don't Skip for Part 1 of Trails in the Sky, and I'm not sure if he's gotten back to the rest besides playing some Cold Steel here and there. I haven't even finished Part 1 myself yet, even though I know I should. They're just such meaty games, and there's so much to play right now, that it is hard.

I can kind of feel Huber in the sense that all the systems in Persona 5 connect together in a really satisfying way. Obviously the characters and story resonated big time with him, making the game one of his favorites. For me though, especially near the end, lots of the game kind of fell apart from pacing issues, characters shoved into the background, reused boss themes, and lots of other nitpicks that added up overall to make me not love it in the end as much as Huber does. When a game becomes your favorite, it is easier to overlook those flaws though. So I definitely don't mind hearing Huber beam about a game he loves like that, even if it comes off pretty hyperbolic to the rest of us.

MBUN

The NPC dialogue not updating over time is a really good point I didn't think of when playing, but definitely the kind of thing that separates the best RPGs of all time from the rest.

MBUN

It upsets me whenever there is a long discussion about JRPGs and The Legend of Heroes doesn't even get mentioned.

Hey, loved the answer to my question! Also, the rest of the podcast :)

High praise for Persona 5 from Huber, but best game ever made in the last 10 years? It either means gaming has really gone down hill from the ps1 era, or Huber is just too hungry for JRPGs at the time and able to see straight past the flaws, to me it is a mid tier game at best and certainly an other wrong step for the Persona series to take after Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Persona can be sooo much more than kiddie grade drama, and now it seems it will never grow past that.

Also for my physical games I have a large cd case I throw all my games in and I ditch the boxes, I cant afford all of the extra storage on my ps4 so I still have to buy physical copies of larger games. I'm 21 and I even own a house and storage is still a big problem for me as well sometimes. If I had the storage on my PS4 I would download everything. It’s nice when a game comes out and I can just download while I’m at a 10 hour shift. It’s ready when I get home and it’s the best feeling.

I love Octopath but there are some flaws that hold the game back from being one of my favorite RPG's. I love the stories but the way they are done are very repetitive, and similar. Get some story, go to a dungeon, fight a boss, rinse and repeat. I enjoy the ambiguity of the side missions but they can be very confusing especially in the earlier sections, most of them for me just ended up being use every ability till it was right. I don't love the leveling up, you have double the characters so if you don't rotate your team regularly they will quickly become more powerful and higher leveled than the other party members in the tavern. I understand from a story perspective why you cant remove your main protag but it can be slightly frustrating when you are trying to rotate your team to have them all be a equal and balanced level but your one character is over leveled. There are also some immersion breaking moments as well, for example when I was the apothecary character I was leaving the village because chapter 1 was done then I went to talk to some NPC's right after and they just talked about having a good apothecary here, when I was right in front of them, even my own best friend I talked to 3 seconds ago didn't acknowledge me at all. Its just things like that took me out of it a bit. Regardless of my issues I love this game with all my heart. It looks beautiful, the combat is fast, and addictive, I like the stories, and the music is great.
