Box Peek July Update

Beep beep! Sorry this is coming in a little late--it's hard for me to plan around Tuesday being the last day of the month, and then yesterday I wanted to finish filming instead of writing about finishing filming.

Scoops first: I just finished filming Episode 4 last night. Editing takes 2-3 days, so I'll be able to start Episode 5 Monday or Wednesday. What this means is that I'm finally willing to come to terms with the reality that I can't make more than one episode in a month.
With that in mind it is now my plan to divide Box Peek into two seasons of five episodes, which was actually an idea brought up in this very comment section last month. The Basic Plan (Subject to Change as Always) will be to premiere the first five episodes probably in late October (after a wedding trip I have to make) and then the last five probably in February. I could be facing a scenario where the last episode premieres one year after the debut of the first episode, blech. That's kind of why I'd like to get some eps out in 2018, just to feel like I've achieved something this year. I think 5 episodes is a bulky enough chunk to feel substantial, and while Box Peek isn't a cliffhanger type of show where Episode 5 will leave you dying to find out what happens next, the two halves separate in a way that isn't unnatural. As always I'm reading the comments, so if you feel something either way about this let me know.

Production Stuff: Episode 4 was beastly, and much like the 2011 classic film Beastly, much of making Box Peek means learning to embrace the suck. This month I definitely lost some to time to unbearable heat and regular depression, but each new episode continues to provide increasingly interesting and stupid challenges that I never seem to predict. A little behind-the-scenes nugget: I have used a new method for the boxes in every episode of Box Peek so far, and I'm going to try a new one for episode five as well. I keep improving the process in theory thinking I'm some kind of paper box genius, and then when it's time to shoot I discover all the new problems my new boxes have. These Episode 5 boxes are going to be perfect though.
Some shots take 40 seconds before I hit record and some take an hour. Sometimes something that's on the screen for one second took hours and hours of drawing, coloring, cutting, and assembling into a shot. Most of the time I'm prepared for this and I think it makes the project special--sloppy in most places, super neat in small spurts--but sometimes there's a thing that slipped through the writing and recording phases where I sit to do draw and go "wait, what? How do I make this??" or worse, I'm sitting next to the camera, staring at my completed set pieces and having no idea how to actually construct my foolish ideas.
I'm sure this is the stuff I'll appreciate later. This whole process is slowly making me better at visualizing the fog of my imagination. Human brains are designed to discard minutiae, and even this strange slopfest of Box Peek has forced me to be meticulous in ways I've never desired to be. It's good.

Episode 5 seems relatively non-beastly, but that's most likely my cyclical naivete speaking. I wish we could do all ten episodes back-to-back, but I'm also excited to show you some stuff relatively soon. Thanks again for your continued patience and support!

Love & Respect,
Kyle

Gotta second the idea of having one episode a month, but what do I know about production lol

Nineteenth

Dammit, Kyle! I wish I could give you a giant hug. I know the self-inflicted pressures and stress that perfectionism brings all too well, but I really hope you know that we all love and support you in this journey. I also hope that you are still finding joy in this project. If you start to see it as a burden, take a step back. We will all understand. <3 You're doing a great job on Box Peek and everything else that you do, and we can see your hardwork and dedication. Please remember that next time you're feeling down on yourself. I, for one, am in awe of your talent and you inspire me to be even more creative. L&R

MizRacy

will there be a "GAAAHHhh..." in episode 4 from the distance? :P

Otoshigami

Take your time. We are dying (at least I am) for more Box Peek, but I would rather wait longer if it means we get the full quality experience. Five episodes before the end of the year sounds fantastic. L&R, always.

All the work you're doing is great. Building up coping skills is just as important as work experience. L&R

Gerred Evatt

We don't deserve you Kyle. That update was as endearing as the first ep of Box Peak. Looking forward to watch the rest independently of when it's ready. L&R.

I love these it’s like see the making of old 80’s anime, but with a harder substance to manipulate. Boxes

Keep making great stuff Kyle! I think dividing is a great idea but take your time and release it however you think is best. I want you, and all allies, to create on a schedule that is best for the creator and the art.

Zach Hardy

Keep up being awesome Kyle! You're truly a big inspiration and take youre time with this masterpiece. L & R from Sweden!! Ps. Depression isn't always bad, our world is bad. Only fools feel good all the time. 🤕🤓🙃😎

c ek

Don't stress yourself, we want quality and we know you are working hard on this and a lot of other things Bossy, just keep on going one step at a time L&R from Spain!

LiquidEnder

Splitting into two halves seems fine. Just remember, you're going to be so proud once the complete product is out there. And if you quit now, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. Good luck!

iconmaster

Keep it up, you can do it! It is tough to hear about the depression part, but your updates read like deep down it's still worth it, at least I hope so! As someone who has also spent a good part of this past month depressed, I just want you to know you have company. We can make it through together!

SmailJui

this is good, I once spent a summer shooting hundreds of hours of footage for a documentary project I had planned - but then didn't have any pre-orders so it fell the back burner for years.. however there were still people waiting to see it so it weighed on my mind heavily. can be quite paralyzing, I only finally got it out when I realized I could just put it out in chunks on youtube (before that editing things down to DVD-length was the norm).

David Warren

Yeah I would say I would not be even a tiny bit let down if you scrapped the project because it was stressing you out too much. It's more important to me that you don't burn out.

Tanner Hoisington

If the pressure of making the show makes you depressed, it can't be worth it, can it?

"All I want for Christmas: season 1 Box Peek"

Swet T.

I would rather wait for a full season for as much as it takes to produce.

Alexander Zyryanov

This is gonna be so great. Episode 1 was one of my favorite things this group ever produced.

Vincent

Kyle, we love you, that is all.

Joseph Caruso

Kyle, this sounds like a great idea! I'm very excited to see what you have been working on, and I'm happy that you found a way to get some of your content out to us in a way that you are happy with! Stay healthy and keep having fun with this project! We will surely be able to see the passion you have poured into this as we watch each episode over and over while patiently waiting for the season two! Love and respect!

SuperAfroBoy

Hey Kyle, I just wanted to say a) congratulations on episode 4, and b) projects like this tend to be way less isolating when you let people help. I've made video games with groups in college, and while it is a ton of work, it's fun seeing your work meld with others'. Going through "the suck" is way more bareable when others are there with you. I hope if you ever want to make a season 3, or start a new creative endeavor, you will include at least a couple of people into the process. Hell, it's probably not too late to have people help with season 2, if that was something you wanted to try out. I look forward to seeing all the hard work you put into this little passion project. Keep up the good work.

Quaznarg

Kyle, in your updates I can really feel the passion, the dedication but also the pain you seem to go through, creating such a big project! That's deeply touching to me but also makes me hope that you don't overwork yourself during the process and that you put your personal well being first! As always I'd like to send you ALL the love and ALL the respect! And as always I'd like to stress that we, the patreons, are willing to wait patiently for this and that we feel for you and the process you're going through and that we really don't want you to feel pressured. Once again: All the love! All the Respect! <3

Johannes Bretz

Oh baby, Call of Duty and Red Dead step aside, October is Box Peek's month now.

Take your time! Sounds like you're experiencing the nice ozillation between frustration and fun that big projects usually entail! L&R.

Looking forward to it either way but it feels like a struggle doing it alone considering it takes so long, maybe after five is done you can find some way to get help doing the next five.

sam

Fun read - love it!

Sonny Laguna

Thanks Kyle. Don't give up! The updated is great and very much appreciated.

Yeah or even every 2 weeks? Starting in October while the other episodes are being made.

Faraz Rizvi

Why release everything in one (or 2) bulks? You could just release 1 per month starting October. Then it will just go on with no need for a season 2

Sven Van Lathem

Excited! Would love a blooper reel or making-of type of deal after it's all wrapped up. That would be fun. Keep up the great work Kyle. L&R

Brad Russell [Toukz]

Dividing the series into two seasons makes sense to me, sounds like a good idea!

Ian Alexander

I'm guessing the wedding trip isn't for his own wedding.

Ian Alexander

Congrats on getting married Kyle, plz take your time with the show I look forward to seeing both seasons.

Jeffrey Tessar

I´m glad that you seem to have found a solution that lets you feel better about putting something out, while also not having it negatively effect the quality of the production in the way you mentioned as an option some time back. Here´s hoping you have a creatively fullfilling month, Love and Respect!

I always liked the British style of having smaller "series" -- It not only makes a show feel more easily digestible, but you get a second chance at a launch with the beginning of series 2. Box Peek Series 1 & 2 -- Definitely a good plan!

keithbungle

Really respect these deep dives into your process. L&R as always, Kyle!

James McCoy

Stay the course. Looking forward to the end result.

VGJunky

It's weird to imagine things like hours of drawing for one second, but if its anything like the pilot episode then it's worth the wait! This kind of makes me think of how some anime will release on TV kind of sloppy then they go clean it up for the blu ray! Are you going straight for the blu ray release Kyle? 😀

Matt Brookbank

I know this is a challenging proposition, but I really urge you to consider the idea of Box Peak Interns. Based on all the EZA fan art, and even the Bossman streams fan art, you have some seriously talented Allies, who I have no doubt would jump at the chance to help you with this. There is absolutly nothing wrong with getting a bit of help. I know the idea of bringing new people into the production is terrifying, and you’re thinking it would be too hard to change your creative process to include another pair of hands, how would it work, what if they’re weird. Any small business startup will tell you the same thing, but I’m positive it’s an idea at least worth exploring, and could really help with managing your workload, and taking the pressure off your brain.

Box Peak Holiday Special!!!!!

The episodes are too short and perhaps too pointless for me to expect the audience to stay engaged from month to month

Easy Allies

I've been filming snippets of my more complicated setups, but I'm not sure it would work on its own. I'm thinking of adding them on top of director's commentary or something

Easy Allies

Why not just release on ep a month from this point on? If he'll sing can release an ep every 6 months, I don't see the problem with 1 a month.

Shaaheen Peyvan

I really love the idea of a mid season break! Anime and TV Series do it!!! Why not Box Peek?! I'm so excited and happy about this entire process and I can't explain what it means to hear your thoughts and updates on it every month!!

Kyle, I’ve got four words for you: Let it cook, babayyyy!

Michael Tucci

I look forward to whatever you put out. Your time and efforts have not gone unnoticed and you should be proud of your creation. We (the audience) understand that this is a big undertaking, and you are very busy making EZA amazing and life in general. I hope you are taking care of yourself too because I guarantee that every ally cares far more about you and your welfare than delays on your projects. Take care and let it cook!

Morgan Mohalla

Keep up the hard work, Kyle!! I'm really excited. You should be proud of the work you've done so far! L&R <3

Rae the Doe

Thanks Kyle keep it up

Blade Kasper

Unbearable Heat and Regular Depression: The Box Peek Story Both of those things suck and also pretty much summarize my summer. Keep pushin' through! And give this project all the time you want to give it! L&R!

Max Jahner

Looking forward to seeing them Kyle and I appreciate all the hard work :)

Love these updates so, so much!! <3 I'm down with two 5 ep seasons - very U.K. TV show style! Can't wait to see all your amazing hard work come to life! Keep going Kyle, we love you man.

You’re a treasure, Kyle & I’m very excited to see the first season! L&R behhbehh

I would love just a monthly update from all the allies on what they've been doing and how they found it. Also, love the openness about mental health. I've had my own cocktail of depression and anxiety for 5 years or so now and really try and be open and matter-of-fact about it. Love and Respect Kyle! Daf

Dafydd Gape

Your updates just make me wish you had a regular written segment on Patreon....but really, I just don't want you to burn out and quit. Good luck, Kyle.

Keep it up! Take your time and try not to feel more pressured than is good for you :)

Ian Barker

I'm really glad you decided to compromise on quantity instead of quality. This just means I have more to look forward to in 2019!

I can wait 'til you come back from your honey moon for the next 4 episodes. Thanks for keep us posted.

César Villa

I'm constantly blown away by how dedicated and hard working you are kyle, especially in regards to Box Peek. I know the decision to split the season up probably wasn't an easy one to make, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't super excited to finally get to see the new episodes. Keep up the amazing work and take care of yourself. <3

Esther Devil

Thanks for the update, Kyle! Nothing but love and respect for creator's intent!

Isaiah Matthews

Nice work Bosman. I like the idea of splitting into two seasons. Another idea; have you considered filming your progress? It would be cool to see a "making of" type documentary for box peek. This can be launched at the end of season 2. I just say this because reading those nuggets is really interesting, and I'd love to see the behind the scenes on something so hands-on like box peek.

Andrew Chalmers

I think I might like two blocks of five episodes in a season format more than one string of 10. Mostly because I love having a healthy taste of something while also having more to look forward to, and that release model would satisfy that for me.

Eric Jackson

It's better this way.

Love and respect!

ZatVunDoot

Thanks for the update! 2 seasons is more than fine

LeeLore

I'm so grateful I'm having a vacation during this terribly hot weather, I don't think I would get anything done. So be proud of finishing an episode and good luck on the next one

Mark van Dijken

I think splitting the show up into two "Seasons" is a good idea. I know one person's opinion doesn't matter much but figure i'd put my two cents out there and say that yeah, although it sucks there might be a year gap between episode one and episode 10 when that wasn't the plan, I do not mind waiting that long at all. I am so unbelievably excited for Box Peek that when it comes doesn't matter to me, just that it does. So, yeah. Plus Spider-man is coming out soon so that will make me forget about everything else. Anyway, I love these updates and hearing about your process, thank you for sharing them with us, and good luck with the rest of the episodes Kyle <3

Spin-off behind the scenes style sketches of Kyle's papercraft-induced madness as filler. Twist is the sketches overtake the show, devolving into a papercraft version of Kyle trashing wildly against a maddening world.

I think the split is a great idea, even if that's only because I cant wait to see more. Be proud of yourself that you undertook this project Kyle; many minds hold passions and ideas that never, ever see fruition.

Jon

Im cool with this. I understand the heat sucks been pretty hot up where I am too.

Joseph Field

May I recommend you listen to the first episode of the "This is Not A Conspiracy Theory" podcast? It's from Kirby Ferguson, who did a kickstarter for his passion project in 2012 to make a 7 part documentary (called This is Not A Conspiracy Theory) , and he projected to have it completed by 2014. He is now forecasting he'll have the last part out the door by the end of this year. The podcast is his diary of the process of him making the last part. I mention it not because it's great(the documentary so far is phenomenal, as is his previous work Everything is a Remix), but because he spends a decent amount of time talking about how he came to grips with his huge time miscalculation(like Box Peek, This is Not a Conspiracy Theory takes a LOT of work) and how he's turned it around into embracing his once in a lifetime passion project. Give it a listen! http://www.thisisnotaconspiracytheory.com/blog/2018/7/30/this-is-not-a-conspiracy-theory-podcastto

Connor Rosine

Take your time to do it right. Two seasons are a wonderful idea.

Tyler Travis

Excited to hear this!! I definitely suggested that in a comment last time so really happy with the development. Feels right. Box Peeeeeeeeek!!!

hellsfoxes

I’m down for a breaking bad finale season model

Freddyfingers26

I feel you on the heat, been so hot in Vancouver for awhile all we wanted to do was sit in underwear and drink cold beer and cider and watch terrible TV shows til its over.. Global warming sucks for productivity big time.

David Warren

I appreciate this Beautifully Beastly update!

Paul Meekin

Thanks for the update Kyle! Having two seasons sounds great and I really look forward to seeing how the show has evolved from episode 1!

Olf Himself

You’re doing something incredibly special. The creative process can be a brutal one. Proud of you dude.

YawnSong

Thanks for the update Kyle! Enjoy it. It's your passion project!
