I’ll be the desenting voice & say I loved how the the stories were structured. Small personal stories for each character with some very lite interactions with the other player characters. Though many won’t care for the format I’ve been waiting for an RPG like this. It’s my game of the year so far. I’ve always found myself in the minority when it comes to my taste in most things and it looks like this will be no different.

I was slowly playing it with an ounce of hope the story might actually get better... Ben's review has ended my motivation to keep playing. A combat system alone does not make a game for me, especially an RPG. Oh well.. thanks for saving my time!

8/10, what a garbage score. Might as well not exist /s

The whole world is sectioned by zones you can use to travel to anywhere else in the world. If you've already visited a town you can fast travel to that town though.

Is there an overworld in Octopath?

after 60 hours i got to credits, felt about 30 hours too long and the repetitive story structure got boring long before the end. the second i saw one of the extra dungeon bosses had almost 200k health and was a repeat i closed the game and traded it in. 5/10

If there was a sequel I'd love to see a format that doesn't pretend the rest of the party doesn't exist during story sequences. Part of what made Chrono Trigger so great and replayable was seeing what different combinations of teammates would say in any given scenario.

For me story is the biggest part of what brings me into a JRPG - I will probably skip this one and get back to finishing Trails in the Sky instead.

Ian Alexander

if you wanted to play for the story I'd definitely recommend skipping it... but I love the combat, best RPG combat since Chrono Trigger IMO!

Great review. I'm about 35 hours in, up to Chapter 3, and it's starting to fall apart a bit for me. I love the combat but the writing is (mostly) awful and the formulaic structure has so far made it feel like there is little surprise. I would've prefered a more organic structure. Also, I guess this is just a typical JRPG thing, but the narrative sections are far too drawn out, with pauses between dialogue frustratingly adding up after a while.

I don't like seeing pixels, and I didn't like game's combat from the demo. I liked the characters and was considering playing this game for the story, but when it was released I've decided to skip it. Looks like it was the right call.
