Friend Code: Star Fox Racing Game from Retro Studios?

Correction: I say 9.99 for the 1 year Switch Online plan, but it's 19.99 and I even had it in the notes.

Ben and Blood join the panel to discuss the Switch's paltry online details, Capcom announcing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for Switch, just how good is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and is Retro Studios really working on a Star Fox racing game.

Friend Code: Star Fox Racing Game from Retro Studios?

That ending from Star Fox: Command...still gives me shivers.

At this point, an arcade rail shooter isn't gonna cut it. Star Fox 1, 64 and Zero have the issue of being pick up and play do to how short they are. Assault got tiring do to having to make boring objectives to pad up the game, and command relied on repetitive combat scenarios like Star Fox 2 to pad the game. My ideal version is if they took Rogue Squadron approach and have the missions have both primary and secondary goals adding dynamic difficulty. Also phasing a mission by having a rail sequence after a all range section (like in the first level of Rogue Leader). Also choosing different ships could both add to the dynamic difficulty as well as maybe being able to do certain objectives.

I'm honestly getting tired of both Nintendo's approach to re-releasing old games (IE their greed) and a good chunk of gamers having a sense of, yes entitlement with transferring old games to new system. It never used to be that way, and those games can still be played where you bought them. I think things like backwards compatibility and the VC are a way to soften the fact that new games are not available as frequently especially with the past few Nintendo systems, and releasing decades old games was Nintendo's solution. Blood brought up what Xbox is doing with backwards compatibility, but Microsoft has next to nothing in the pipeline and nothing that won't be on PC. Really, all Microsoft has right now is old games. Plus, how many times can one person buy an old game? There's a simple solution to all this, and that's stop rebuying old games digitially unless there's a major change like online play added. Streets of Rage 2 is one of my favorite Genesis games, but outside of collections and freebies, the only time I purchased it again after its initial Genesis release, was the 3D classics version. If everyone wouldn't buy old Nintendo games five times, then Nintendo would have no incentive to keep re-releasing them in their greedy way of releasing them. (I'm in a hurry, so this isn't very articulate, but I think I've made my point).

I just can't help feel like that the reason for no VC is because it didn't make a profit. I know Mario Zelda etc sells but things like Balloon Fight likely only sell to a handful of fans so bundle ones that don't as something "free". Than SNES and up holds up better so you sell them alone.

Giving Star Fox to the Ace Combat team could yield an interesting take on "traditional" Star Fox.

I think the point is more that people don't have to pay Sony or Microsoft a dime to physically back up saves. With Nintendo u can only back up data by forking over more money.

I'm wondering if Nintendo thinks they can get away with this online malarkey by having great games and offering what they see as huge games that people want. They gamble that players are willing to put up with outdated online services because Switch is the only place you are going to get Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. I think people would have put up with the WiiU had Nintendo released some big, quality first-party titles.

Blue Shell is a balance thing. It is so the person out in first, way ahead of the pack, doesn't get a free ride once they break away, while everyone else clustered together keep repeatedly trading places. Sure, it isn't perfect, but they've tried to make it more fair over the years with stuff like Stars, Boos, and Super Horns. Can even dodge them with a well timed Mushroom but the timing is tight.

Random hottake: I dunno about this whole "if i can't physically backup my data in 2018..." seems like a contradiction to me. Specifically, physical backups just seems like a dated concept. Sure other systems allow for this option, but it honestly feels like a legacy option. Apps like SnapChat were popularised due to its low memory footprint (i.e. we didn't have to think about storage, it was just a moment that happened. It wasn't even saved at all - obviously recent features have been added to allow saving, but that's not my point). I can imagine this concept pushing into our future, where it's just online only. Cloud saving itself may even become a dated concept soon. Perishable save data maybe? I dunno, random thoughts. It just seems like local physical memory backups is a thing that appeals to older people (i.e. dated concepts).

I have high hopes for the Star Fox racing game. Combat racing is a woefully underserved genre. Mario Kart doesn't cut it because items like blue shell make it hard to see it as a skill based game.

Yea I noticed that too

I'm only a few minutes but i think Damiani said a mistake. He says 1 year is 9.99 ? While its 19.99..
