i used to be so against big, full, AAA games being digital in my collection. i'd use digital for xbla or psone classics, but that was about it. but nowadays? maaaaaaaaaaaaan that's changed big time!

I have a switch and if I can buy physical I buy physical. But there is exceptions to the rules for example I might get smash digital for the convince but I am not 100% sure if I will. If I had Xbox I would go all digital no question, I feel like I can trust them to let me use it on PC/Xbox/NewXbox. I don't know if I trust Playstation in this regard, I use my brothers and he only goes digital. But I plan to wait and get the ps5.

Being able to lend games to friends or borrow games has been a huge advantage of physical. Also, physical games are almost always cheaper on consoles.

I used to be all physical. I loved to look at the special editions and packages, but nowadays I think I have outgrown this. They took up so much space in my apartment and they collected dust. I started to think that I don't care that much anymore. And I tell you what, I do love to show my library on the PS4 directly and being able to just start up the game without changing disks. So yeah, I'm slowly starting to buy more and more digital instead of physical. It's just so much more convenient.

One final counter point that people bring up ALOT on the digital vs physical argument: There is NO difference in the install space used on HDD between physical and digital copies of a game on PS4. When you install a game from a physical copy, that game is still installed from the hard drive. The only reason your disk even spins up now is to read the entitlement file that verifies you own the game. That's it. Your not saving HDD space on PS4 between the two. Now Switch, that's a different matter because of how Nintendo set up their karts as read only, and disc vs SSD read speeds.

Your age and means really affects how you see this question. I alternate my preference in all media for this question, not just games. When it's something extremely important to me, a Shenmue or other major release, I will go CE Physical. But for the most part, I do love the convenience of digital for ALOT of reasons. I have more than one console I play, be it a friend's or my own. That copy is installed on both without damaging or losing the disc in transit. While it's a west coast thing mostly, 9pm launches are a must. And finally the biggest thing is space. You become alot more open to digital when you have to pay rent for the space to hold those physical copies.

Sold all of my original PS1 rpgs because most were on ps3 for $10 or less. Then no PS1 on PS4? What the hell Sony!! Now I have to drag my PS3 out every time I want to play Suikoden.

In my experience, at least right now, physical games are still much much cheaper, especially after two months. If you can wait to pick up a game, you could save up to half the cost in that time frame.

I've mostly switched to digital at this point but I am feeling some of the drawbacks. Primarily the issue is that the price on the physical copies drops much faster than the digital. For games that didn't just come out, you are paying a premium for the digital copy.

My main reason for getting more games digitally now is that your library is always easily accessible. I know it takes minimal effort to switch discs, there's just something satisfying about not having to do it. And I go back and forth between a few location regularly, I can easily take my ps4 with me but I don't really want to take 25 games with me each time.

I’m divided on this issue. On one hand, having a digital collection has encouraged me to play more of my games, especially on the Switch. I will finish a session on one game, scroll through my list for a bit, then spontaneously jump into another game simply because it was convenient to do so. Also, with nearly every game receiving patches nowadays, it means that you truly only own the original version in the retail package. So, if servers go offline, you would no longer be able to get those patches or dlc through conventional means. Ultimately, I’m 60% digital and 40% physical.

Great episode Huber, I too have been divided on the digital vs physical issue, however now I clearly stand with purchusing Digital Media. The truth is I used to not really think about it and would buy physical games. In fact a part of me loved the visual beauty of having entire bookshelf filled with games to display. However about 5-6 years ago I started realize the benefits of owning games DIGITALLY far out weighs any positives for a purchasing a game physically. Physical games can break, Digital games do not. Physical games take up space in your room or house, Digital games only take up space on a hard drive. Not to mention the convenience of having digital game library at your immediate disposal on your console or PC cannot be underestimated. Being able to quickly change what your playing with out switching disks or cartridges seems small, but is a huge convenience. Plus Digital games allow your systems to play a game with out spinning the disc. Running physical discs in a console or computer simply puts a very large strain on gaming system- ultimately diminishing the functionality & life of your gaming system or eventually just breaking it entirely. Case in point: I personally take excellent care of all my gaming materials; but I essentially fried one of my PS3's & two of my 360's playing with physical discs. Also do not forget about the extra bonuses playing with digital games such as Early pre-order downloading, subscription perks like PlayStation Plus free games, as well as having a past and present library of all your games for your gaming system or PC to fully access at any time. In the end, as I said before- The positives of digital gaming just simply exceed the buying of physical disc games. With all that said, when I was very young, coming home from the game store with a brand new game that I have been waiting months or years to play (like Star Fox 64), or something entirely new & unexpected (like Tenchu: Stealth Assassins) that I bought on whim is a very special, having a almost romantic feeling to the process. Like a heightened feeling of anticipation that would build happiness & excitement, eventually blasting your imagination into orbit as you began to play that new game. But Im not a kid anymore, and while I love & cherish those memories- I can not ignore the fact that playing the games I own now in a digital format is just a way better overall experience. Physical games are rooted in my beloved gaming past- But I am making new memories now, with new games, in a new & superior Digital gaming format, in which I for one will never look back.
