Box Peek May Update

This month's update kinda sucks since there's not a lot of exciting news. Despite a late-month push, episode 3 is still not finished. I expect to get it done before E3, but it's still going way slower than I wished.

I attribute this to two things: I probably had the fewest Box Peek Days--days where I chill out and cram on the show all day--of any month since starting production, and episode 3 is just complex.

I'll tell you something I'm currently struggling with. Box Peek as I pitched it over a year ago was a simple stupid paper puppet show. The story revolves around a game played while hiding in boxes for the sole purpose of it being easy to produce with paper and wouldn't require intense animations or art. Basic characters, basic backgrounds, and basic dialogue--it's supposed to be dumb and rough, kinda bad but charming in an "oh he's trying" way. However, I keep trying to improve things that probably don't enhance the show's purpose. There's a lot of stuff that I don't like in episodes 1 and 2, particularly the backgrounds/environments, that I tried to fix in episode 3. A few times I've shot a scene with characters in front of this neat drawing I worked pretty hard on, and it's out of focus to simulate depth, and I think, "Well that wasn't worth it." Other times, you'll know it when you see this episode, I see a whole scene assembled on my old TV I've set up as a monitor and think "Dang, this looks really cool." Among the hours of creation in solitude, these are the most rewarding moments.

This month, Producer Kyle and Creative Kyle need to renegotiate. June will also not have as many Box Peek Days as I want (need), and it's hard to imagine getting episode 4 done without either cutting some corners or carving out more time to dedicate exclusively to Box Peek. Fortunately I can say that my cutting and carving skills are as sharp as they've ever been. There's going to be a lot of puns in Box Peek, have I mentioned that yet?

Oh hey, I do have good news actually: And For That Reason will have a special live debut on Thursday, June 14th, the last day of our E3 coverage. The premiere episode will be uploaded here exclusively to patrons that very minute, and we'll upload a new episode each Thursday until the end of the six episode run. There is a plan to eventually make the series public, but we haven't sorted out those specifics yet. And For That Reason is really fun and makes me excited for whatever series we choose to follow it up with.

More good news: We'll be shooting the 2018 E3 Betting Special this Thursday, June 7th, so you can expect to see it by the end of Friday the 8th. Please look forward to our new controversial gimmicks.

So the point here is that I can still produce some shows in a timely manner as long as Ian is editing.

New update next month!
(Wish me luck)
-Kyle

Good luck, Kyle! We believe in you ^-^

Hang in there, man! We'll enjoy them all the more knowing you gave them the time you wanted. Take care of yourself during E3, eat great food, and sleep when you're tired. L&R

Good luck! You can do it !

Oh man, I feel you Kyle! Sometimes I start a project with a pretty simple idea; "yeah, this will be done in about 2 months". After one month I added all these crazy other ideas that would really help sell the project pushing the deadline beyond infinity. At that time I have to kill my babies which sucks but at the end of the day you end up with something really cool if you push through and take your time. So I'm gonna echo a lot of the other allies here: take your time Kyle!

Stefan Vlemmix

Take your time Kyle, this is your show. Make it how you want it to look and don't rush. You're not on a TV schedule here. =P I have though been hesitant to suggest some things because it is such a personal project. But I do think there are ways to help make your production move along faster and more efficiently without a change in the way the show looks. I suggest transferring the lineart to digital, or scan the lineart in to computer. The reason is not to make the show digital or color, but so you can make minor changes to characters and expressions without redrawing the whole character. Then, you can print out the lineart and hand color the pic. I'd like to think that could kill alot of production time without alot of change to the look of the show. I hope that comment is not too presumptuous and hope it helps!

A delayed project can still be good but a rushed one will be bad forever. Take your time Kyle so you can make something worth the wait.

Kyle, this is your pet project, whether you consider it a "dumb little side project" or not the fact is - you care about it and want it to be the best it can be even if no one notices that effort except for you. I know how this feels , I've been drawing a comic with a friend for a few years now and I always strive to simply improve with each issue, at first it annoyed me that with 2 people it still ended up taking about 6 months to make a single 24 page comic but with only about 3-5 hours a week spent on it most weeks that's just what it takes. Box peek may have been intended to be much simpler than it actually turned out but that's how these things roll man, just roll with them ! Instead of setting a goal for "the whole series will be done at XX date" just aim for 1 episode at a time, that's all your goal needs to be. Then , when episode 3 is finished, just aim to do episode 4 and be realistic about it with yourself, don't get down if you spend 3-4 months on one of these , you are but a single guy taking on a substantial project with only so much time per week to work on it. Perfection is an unreasonable goal and perhaps for many (myself included) even striving for something that "looks good" is even perhaps unreasonable because any artist or creative type is always their own worst critic. All you can do is keep aiming "for better". Set a goal of trying at least 1 small thing every episode just to see if you can do it. Once the entire run is finished you can look back on it as something you built , warts and all and be proud of it. Whatever about it annoys you in some fashion ? just make a note about it for the next thing you tackle. Cartoons are hard, drawing is hard, comics are hard, art is hard. But you know what ? it's damn satisfying whenever something is finished whether it takes weeks, months or even a couple of years. Good luck and have fun with it !

Take your sweeet sweeet time... let this baby marinade

Good luck Kyle!

I did think about this. I think that maybe in the future I can find stills that don't give too much away. Honestly it's hard sometimes to keep making stuff while unable to show them to anyone. On the other hand I also enjoy being secretive. We'll see what I can come up with

Easy Allies

Anything Creative will always have bumps and snags in the road and even days where you have the time but not the motivation and vice versa. It's alright. You aren't letting us down by not "having it out in a timely fashion" cause TV/ Series don't work the way you expect, even with all the planning. We're here for you and I'm excited to see more of these characters I've already fallen in love with but I'm prepared to wait til you feel comfortable releasing them. Like my old animation professors said, "Animation/ art is never truly finished. It's just released at the moment we feel most confident with it."

Always appreciate the ... peek... behind the curtain. Best of luck! We're rooting for ya!

It seems like the great majority is fine with waiting, so hopefully you're not stressing about that. And it sounds like you're aware of your perfectionism and the "feature creep" and trying to get a hold of it all, so honestly I'm not worried at all. You'll get out of this jam (ahem) soon enough. Put something out that you can be proud of. =]

Nick Steiner

Seems like i'll be winning haha :D i said the 8th lol

Sven Van Lathem

I totally agree with this (except for the 'allies that paid for this deserve it sooner than later' part... kyle can take any time he needs but shouldnt worry so much though) and would also argue that if the episodes look better and better it might look weird. Make sure that the whole series kinda looks the same, otherwise it'll be like if Southpark suddenly added complex walking animation on their characters lol. The simplicity is part of the charm. The looks and 'simplicity' of episode 1 is perfect so please Kyle, dont worry about the little details in the background and whatnot. Also, i think the anniversary gave you a strict deadline wich maybe helped you in your process of going forward. Maybe give yourself deadlines per episode. L&R, dont stress about it :)

Sven Van Lathem

I can only speak for me, but I also don't particularly mind delays, so I would say not to beat yourself up too too much for it. I can understand the difficulties associated with producing something you truly care about and love, especially as others said during such a crazy busy time as it must be right now. Of course learning some things through the process should help out in the future, such as the background issue you mentioned, so I imagine there will be even more improvements in the future to both your production abilities and speed. Best of luck Kyle, and I hope you are enjoying the process as much as we are looking forward to it (or at least proportionally).

I don't mind waiting at all since I'm sure Box Peek would be totally awesome and y'all are firing on all cylinders with the new equipment and the undoubtedly great E3 coverage. Let it cook! L&R

If there's any way you can make sure the betting special is uploaded on the 7th that would be great. We had avatar bets over in the reset era eza thread and I dont wanna lose lol.

To Kyle, in case he's reading: Don't overproduce the show, people were super happy and positive about the first episode. It's not worth it to delay it many more months in order to perfect it even further, for various reasons: you'll keep being super busy all the time for the months to come, you won't be really free to tackle something new and possibly even more creative until you're finished with it, you won't be part of other shows for months (Amateur Gundam Construction, Fiasconauts, Dumb Game Monday), and the patrons that upped their pledges one year ago to let you create the show deserve to see the finished product sooner than later. If you keep at it with this rhythm you'll finish the series next year, I'm not kidding. You thought you'd have been done with it in a few months, you thought you'd have been done by Spring, you think you'll be done by Summer. It's not happening, considering you haven't wrapped up episode 3 yet. There's E3 now, then there's going to be Easy Livin', you'll have possible new things to worry about, maybe even the studio soon if things go right, then from October and onwards gaming is going to be super busy again, here comes the awards season and before you know it we'll be at the 3rd Anniversary. I'm not saying to put out trash, I don't think that you're even capable of putting out trash, everything you touch somehow turns to gold, it's incredible how talented you are. Believe a little more in yourself and try to be happy about what you create, because what you've shown so far is already beyond anyone's expectations. This is not something I say because I can't stand the delay, I mean, I can wait as long as you need to have it finished, but I say this more for your sanity than anything. I wouldn't even be saying so if you didn't admit yourself that you "keep trying to improve things that probably don't enhance the show's purpose". Think about it this way: put out your work into the world with a few imperfections (that's going to happen even if you keep at it for months, you will never achieve a perfect product), let it be judged by a more impartial and fair audience than yourself (you've already seen that people love episode one, I doubt they'll suddenly hate the rest), then improve on it with a future season 2 when the time's right, thanks to everything you learnt by making the first season. Again, I don't want this to come off as someone trying to put pressure on you, or bitching about the delay, I just wanted to give you my personal view on the situation. I hope I didn't offend you or that what I wrote seems pretentious, I have the utmost respect for you. - Alessandro, L&R

I'm a screenwriter, so I totally understand the important battle between Creative self vs. Producer self. In one project, I needed to portray just how evil the antagonist was, and how far he was willing to go to get what he wanted. The story took a twisted turn and he was to torture an innocent person for info. Originally, he set his bar on fire, and locked him inside. That would've required loads of money and time and prep for stunts, special effects, visual effects, medical teams, firemen on stand by, clean up crew, special licenses, etc, etc, etc. Changed it to him burying the bar-owner alive. The intention of the scene remained intact, showing how evil and how far he was willing to go. Production costs were saved and the integrity of the scene was never compromised! On the other hand, I'm also becoming a modder. I'm creating levels for XCom 2 atm, and what I've learned is how far I can stretch my imagination with Modular construction. I think this can also apply to your case; think of how maybe you can draw smaller background parcels that you can rearrange and re-use many times for other episodes, without it looking same-y. Just two thoughts I had right now that I thought could help you fine-tune your creative process without sacrificing, and learning how to make Producer Kyle a helpful ally in the process. L&R always!!!

Kexx

We believe in you. Take your time.

Joetown

Kyle, take as long as you need. I'm doing my own comic stories and things always take longer than I anticipate because it's always so difficult to estimate how long something will take, I want to make it the best I can and also other things from life get in the way. So no worries. I look forward to it once it's done whenever that may be. :)

Ben Bernard-Smith

Good luck, Kyle. Hopefully you'll find a balance between your fiduciary duty and your creative duty.

Eric Grynberg

Take your time Kyle! Wish you the best of luck with the rest of the series.

It’s e3 so it’s understandable. Separately for your own sake, I’d advise you to lower the quality of box peek. If stuff doesn’t edit well together or there are lighting mismatches or someone’s line is a little inaudible etc. just let it through. Art based videos are way more time consuming than the output suggests. You are not Pixar. Simpler, rougher, sillier. My media law lecturer loved the phrase “cheap and cheerful”. Media is EXPENSIVE. Keep it kindergarten level. Avoid temptation to polish. Just keep moving.

Estaban

No worries, we know this is a busy time of year for all of you guys. Take your time and release stuff you're happy with. :)

I agree with the whole game delay analogy, you should take however long you need to make it just right! But Producer Kyle does absolutely need to be involved. You don't want each episode to be overdeveloped, but you really shouldnt worry about having to Kojima it and redo something

Just take the whole year for it. Companies can delay games for many years, you can delay this project 6-12 months.

good luck kyle! sounds amazing and i love that you're trying new stuff, whether or not it works out! keep it up buddy we're all excited!

This is the next Stracraft: Ghost.

Great update, Kyle. Love what you guys are doing and anxious to see the end product when Box Peek gets to us. This level of transparency into what you as a creator deal with helps in tempering my excitement for upcoming content with understanding. Just like the studios we love so much, I want you to give your creations as much time as they need to get to a level where you're satisfied with the end result. #letitcook

Thanks for the update Kyle! Hey Kyle, have you considered the idea of sharing a single still image from each episode 2-3 (and 4 this time next month) as a Patreon exclusive update? I think having something cool to look at would ease the wait just a bit. I’m personally always excited by stills of upcoming movies, and would be just as excited for a still of upcoming Box Peek episodes!

Brandon Patton

With e3 around the corner it's understandable.

OverNightGaming

You can do it, Kyle!

Ian Alexander

Honestly these updates just whet my appetite for what's to come! But I wonder Kyle... Is it time to start bringing in other Allies occasionally to help with some aspects? There must be simple/menial things that Producer Kyle can convince Creator Kyle to loosen his grip on.

James McCoy

All good dude, take your time!

Steven Perry

We'll watch it when it's ready. No pressure at all.

Worth the wait.

#LetItCook

Good luck! Figured you were jammed with e3 stuff as is, cant wait to see the community's game pitches

Joseph Field

If there is one thing all we learned from Cooking Mama: Bon Appétit! is that some things gotta cook

All things come to those that wait. When it's ready it's ready . Good luck.

Andrew Mac

Thanks for the update. I wonder Kyle, are you working on this by yourself? It seems like you need someone else to bounce ideas off, and not in a creative way, but in a way where someone can tell you when it's a good idea to cut corners or not. It can be really hard to make this decision when you're directly involved in the creative process. Having someone else chime in can give you some good outside perspective on what's worth doing or what's worth completely cutting to save time.

Andrew Chalmers

Buona fortuna, Kyle.

Star Tsurugi

The premiere episode is still endlessly watchable! Let it cook!

I'd rather you take some time to relax so you can enjoy E3 without this extra pressure. Box Peek will be timeless.

Yui

Thank you for the updates Kyle. Remember to take some ‘me’ time as well, I hope you have some holidays planned!

Rurmelly

Take your time man.

Let it cook, all the best meals take time!

Echoing the sentiments of the other Patrons - take your time and enjoy the creative process :) Good luck with E3 and the betting special, really looking forward to seeing it!

Good luck Kyle! We believe in you!

Good Luck! By the way: i really hope that you film some behind the scenes stuff for box peek! I would love to see the sets, drawings and work space.

Thanks for continuing to give us updates Kyle! I'm happy waiting, I know Creative Kyle AND Producer Kyle always have great ideas, so whatever you produce will be stunning, just as episode one was! And bless you for announcing the betting special date, E3 hype is at max levels. Also, I'm very excited for the puns :) <3

Take all the time you need! This is like, the busiest time of year for you guys. I can only imagine how much work you're putting in so please take care of yourself too. I'm constantly blown away by everything you make and do so I know the wait will be worth it :) <3

No worries Kyle! I'm happy to wait for Box Peek. Looking forward to all the other creative stuff coming up soon.

LeeLore

Art is never finished and an artist is never 100% content, it's important to know that it's okay to release art into the world that you aren't completely in love with. But don't rush. Don't worry about people getting impatient. Let it cook and enjoy the process. Crock-pot, baby. Crock-pot.

Stuart

The Final Bosman and Bosman V. Wozniak tribute videos just go to show that you specifically create content, scripted/directed or otherwise that carries real weight with people and resonates in some really human ways. Nobody is perfect and sometimes life is sad and the intersection of these ideas in your content has always been a great focal point for me personally. So I’ll share in the voices of many others, in spirit and in text, good luck, Kyle!

Eric Jackson

Keep up the grind, you're working so effing hard! Hope your hands aren't too messed up by all the drawing, there are lots of stretches online you can do to minimize the damage.

Noah Weinstein

No worries at all Kyle, it'll be worth it in the end!

Sebastian Mauritzell

Consider your luck wished!

Mark van Dijken

He's waiting til most of them are done before releasing them regularly.

Noah Weinstein

Maybe you can reuse that cool background in another scene when out of focus isn't called for!

Matt Brookbank

Wait. Did I miss the release of the second episode?

Good luck! Christmas presents like this are cool, too. :)

Ville Ranto

Keep being you, Kyle. You’re worth more than we can tell you.

UziSuicide666

This is why I always wait to read a few comments before going to bed. Thank you

Easy Allies

Good luck Kyle!

Take your time as much as you like, the preview was worth the wait! Looking forward to it. Also, think you mean 7th of “June” for betting special. Looking forward to that too!

Good luck Kyle! EZA has more than enough content at the moment to keep us occupied till you decide to release Box Peek in all it's glory! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Dileepan M

Thanks for the update, Kyle. Let it cook. Stir the pot. Season the puns. I'd imagine all of us are happy to wait.

Let it cook.
