Frame Trap - Episode 58 "Games Getting Swallowed By Other Games"

On a hot new Frame Trap, the panel shares thoughts on games they couldn't talk about during the E3 madness including Mutant Year Zero, Children of Morta, Knights and Bikes, Ooblets, The Spectrum Retreat, and Ninjala. There's also plenty of chatter about Hollow Knight, Mario Tennis Aces, and Unravel Two. For the HOTTAKE, the panel considers the dangers of games releasing so close together.

Frame Trap - Episode 58 "Games Getting Swallowed By Other Games"

Comments

They lately have been freely updating several of their games with quality of life features, like the added control configurations in arms, or the 200cc in Mario Kart 8 or the balloon world mode in Mario Odyssey. The thing with them is that they don't clarify if they'll do those things and leave it on the air until it happens or they move to other things.

Gonzalo Ruiz

At least it might be hard to feel burned at that price. I think.

Gonzalo Ruiz

Seems like a nice wish, but as history has told us, Nintendo will fight with everything and everyone to delay that possibility as much as they can. That's something they're strongly against.

Gonzalo Ruiz

I play in handheld mode almost exclusively on flights and rarely take it with me when just going out. I'm not sure if you have a PC or other system, but almost all of the games that people want/have for the switch I play on PC. And when I want to play Mario or Zelda, I want to play on a big screen.

GW Fawkes

Oh Hollow Knight. One of the most frustrating games I've ever played. Never felt the need to get the "true ending." Really felt the enemies were cheap, the structure convoluted, and I could never really get a good feel for the range of my weapon. I loved the atmosphere, music, vibe, etc, but those things definitely hampered my experience. And, at 25 hours, it was way too damn long. The closest I'll get to ever playing a Souls game

GW Fawkes

To me, the first Unravel's story is rather straightforward, about the nostalgia and memories of growing up somewhere, leaving that place and seeing it change over time. It was an immensely emotional and special experience for me, with a beautiful overall presentation, both visually, narrative and sound-wise. Because of that, I immediately downloaded the second one and, while the story didn't grab me nor impacted me as much as the first, this one was special for an entirely different reason, thanks to the co-op. Because my brother now lives and works overseas, we don't have nearly any time to play these kinds of co-op games like we used to, and it was a beautiful experience all the same. That's why I'm still very grateful for this series.

José Fernandes

Reason games don't get released in this lull is because there will be zero media attention around it. E3 swallows up all news avenues, pre, during and after e3.

John

It seems the frustration of Nintendo comes from time to time whenever they don't follow the trends or play ball to what everyone else is doing. They aren't a company that places importance in story, they build their games around the systems, mechanics and controls they want to use. Most of their trailers emphasis this like in BotW with the climbing and the world, with Samus Returns they put focus on the counter and aeon abilities, with Mario Odyssey they put focus on the transformations and levels. etc. They don't make a single type of game either, they put the oddly named Sushi Striker, and the Nintendo Labo as important releases for the year. The Switch in general has been centered indie games and first party titles. I do agree with Jim Sterling's remark that Nintendo's management of online makes them look weak. Because it's an aspect I haven't felt that they have put effort to do it competently. I just feel it's not important for them, but it can feel very silly considering every other business outside of videogames put effort into being aware of online features, from advertising to streaming to social networks, it feels odd that even when they implement this online play seems like an extra feature instead of a main one. I don't even play online but even from an outside view it's an aspect I don't get why they struggle or don't care as much.

After hearing Huber talk about Hereditary I immediately purchased tickets for tonight.

I definitely feel Huber on Pokémon. It just has never appealed to me mechanically or narratively for years. (I still love the anime though). But, I've found myself drifting more towards Shin Megami Tensei and Digimon. Both games provide that addictive capture and collection mechanics from Pokémon while making it more mechanically complex and narratively interesting, especially SMT. So yeah, I definitely recommend those to anybody feeling the Pokémon burnout. As for this week's hotake, don't buy into the zeitgeist. A game will always be there for you. Focus on what you're most excited about and get to everything else later at your own pace. You're certainly in a more compromised position because your audience is expecting you to talk about something, but Ben, we need you on Dragon Quest XI, Valkyria 4 and Mega Man 11. Huber, Kyle and Jones can handle Spider Man and Red Dead 2. We love you guys because you are all different and can speak to a variety of experiences. A homogenous EZA is not an EZA I want.

Phazonmasher

Doesn't surprise me. When you're raised on in-your-face jump scares and every narrative beat explained into oblivion, a slow burn horror film with an ambiguous narrative is going to seem stupid because it's unfamiliar. Same goes for those of us who were raised on slow burn horror who find modern horror to be shallow and unfulfilling.

Phazonmasher

Some of the younger audience members hated Hereditary during the screening that I went to, with one of them stating that "it was the stupidest thing to ever stupid." Personally, the movie is in my top 5 of the year. The last 15 minutes of Hereditary really messed me up.

Larry DuPreez III

Loved the more fast and loose Caught in a Frame Trap.

I'm with Huber. I Don't really like playing in handheld so my switch stays docked. I know to bigger Nintendo fans this may be blasphemy, but I wish they just made games for my PS4. Then I wouldn't have to buy there consoles for a handful of games. They always get my money though with the great exclusives xD. Then my Nintendo console just gathers dust since I would rather play the better versions of third party games on PS4. Can't wait for Octopath though :)

We had an extra one during E3 for Noodles & Broth. -Bloodworth

Easy Allies

is it me or Ben is recording frametraps faster than ever ? My oh my, so much EZA videos to watch these past few days : ) Thank you ben.

Térence Caron

I'm with Huber on the Switch's handheld side. I rarely go anywhere where I feel like bringing the Switch would be convenient.

Great conversation on Hereditary, awesome film!

Why is this episode unlisted on youtube?

Danni-H4

Mario Tennis Aces- As far as I know, this game doesn't let you play normal tennis sets. Imagine a mario golf game that came out and you only could ever play the first 6 holes on any mode not a single 9 or 18 hole course, would u be upset? Stupid on Nintendo so stupid. Add to that some easy features to make the game way better- custom tournaments with adjustable players locally (beat all three "cups" first try in about 15 min total for all 3), maybe online doubles being better implemented instead of its tucked away location and maybe doubles tournaments too, how about online servers that dont lag out constantly (we have to pay for this soon?)... the mechanics are great but they went so hard in that they left things out and the story is pretty dumb despite some cool bosses. I'd rather have it be an actual tennis game though like those game boy progressions. Its like they said nah tennis doesnt sell we need a hook... and then now they only have the hook and left out the tennis on the finished product. This could have been the best game in the series easily

Brogan Trull

I only play switch in handheld mode. It allows me to multitask and watch streams while playing. They may not get my full attention, but I wouldn't have time to watch them otherwise. I was playing hollow knight the whole time this podcast was on the TV.

Ghost kid started the fiya!
