Spoiler Mode: Daredevil S3 - Q&A Submission

This coming week, Huber and I will dive into Daredevil Season 3 to discuss our thoughts and feelings on the Netflix show. We'd also like to have the discussion revolve around some of your questions. So please submit questions pertaining to Daredevil Season 3. If you want to ask about characters from other shows, please frame them in a way that relates to the new season of Daredevil, otherwise we'll probably skip over them. Questions about the future of Daredevil given the recent cancellations of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, as well as other rumors, are fair game as I plan to have the final segment be about this very topic.

We plan to record Tuesday and put it out as soon as its ready, so if you haven't finished watching yet, you still have some time!

L&R,

- Damiani

I can already picture hyped Huber saying " SPECIAL AGENT POINDEXTER"

Sad no punisher. At least that wasn't canceled. I liked Luke cage and iron fist. I could not finish Jones season 2. I guess I'm in the minority here. Will we get anything else before the Disney app?

What is it, in your opinions, about Season 3 that make it as good as it is? What's the secret sauce?

I am curious how you felt about the devil vs god dynamic that was present throughout this season? More than in previous seasons, Matt’s religion takes more of the forefront, even going so far as to have a religious color palate for his new costume. My question is, was this an effective and meaningful dynamic? Or did it work to almost retcon things from the past? I personally felt like most of this religion stuff came out of nowhere, and conflicts with a few season one scenes, I.e. the preacher saying, “So your Murdoch’s kid.” to an older Matt, when Matt was now retconed to have been raised in that church by this man and the nuns, lines like that really stand out. Also I could have done with a bit less characterization for some of the characters, and the story of Fisk manipulating a government agency is almost a carbon copy of season one, just done better. I love the season as a whole, and I’m very sad that Luke Cage and Iron Fist are cancelled, also no other defenders in Daredevil season three? Come on Marvel/Netflix!

So overall I really like it- the best Marvel Netflix show since JJ season 1 for me. But my question is: does anyone else feel a little disappointed based on the marketing and the story they were adapting? While I liked what we got, I was expecting a greater focus on the conflict between Matt and Fisk. The trailer had a real sense of dread to it: Fisk was loose and going to ruin Matt, Karen and Foggy, but in the end Daredevil was incidental to Fisk's plans (with his targeting being seperate from revenge against Matt), and Karen only became a target after she antagonised Fisk (not in order to get to Matt). Just felt we never got that sense of personal conflict or hopelssness that I hoped for as a result.

I'd like to know how you felt about the deep dives into characters that took place. One episode focused specifically on Ben Poindexter while another focused on Karen . How do you think this affected the pacing of the show? How did you feel about these episodes?

Hi, Damiani and Huber. I mostly liked Daredevil's season 3, a lot of great action scenes and fights, while also having great characters and character development, specially when it concerned to their "humanity". But there were also many things that I felt were done poorly - the final fight scene - and had a bad timing - Karen's past placement. Also, perhaps it's just me, but I felt like Fisk's character was completely off in surrendering to Daredevil's demands. However, even before that, he was asking Daredevil to kill him - in front of Vanessa - knowing full well how much pain and sadness that would have caused her. Not to forget the fact that if he died, he wouldn't be able to protect Vanessa. For someone who said the only reason for him living and everything else he said and did throughout the season, it felt like a complete u-turn/reversal on Fisk's character, personality and motivations. My question is if any of you - and anyone else - noticed this inconsistency with Fisk's character at the end? And how do you feel about the ending, keeping that in mind? Still, I found season 3 to be very good. Season 2 is still the best imho, because The Punisher just elevated things to another level, with Season 1 being the second best. However, as sad as I was to hear about the cancellation of both Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Daredevil's season 3 was still better than any season of those shows, even season 2 of Luke Cage, which I really liked. Lastly, but not least, Damiani, please discuss with Huber and the other Allies about the timing of making a Spoiler Mode, specially if you guys have decided to accept questions from patrons - which is a brilliant idea imho. I say this because this Spoiler Mode is going up only 5 days after Daredevil's season 3 premiered. Even with a weekend, this is not much time to watch 13 episodes. With people having work, school, family commitments, and other activities, many people only have very little time to watch a TV show, so binging it all as soon as it comes out is not an option for many people, who I'm sure would love to participate in the discussion. If it's a Spoiler Mode with no questions asked of the patrons, it doesn't matter since people can just watch it after they're done. But if you're going to involve the patrons, the more time people have, the more people will be able to participate, which will definitely lead to many more varied perspectives and a better discussion. Aloha Allies, There are already a bunch of questions of how the loss of the stand-alone Iron Fist and Luke Cage shows (in my opinion weakest 2 of the 5) will force the upcoming seasons of Jessica Jones and Punisher (and most likely Daredevil S4) to incorporate their characters and continuing plot elements into their own, so I want to focus on something else that I have been pondering for awhile. Since these Netflix shows are considered officially part of the MCU canon, when do you think these events are taking place? The last season of Iron Fist showed street-side posters depicting the year 2016, placing this continuity somewhere near Civil War or Doctor Strange, so a few years removed from current events. But that timeline would also place the events after the Sokovia Accords, so all “powered” known individuals probably would have been found and registered, yet they are not. This, to me at least, is odd since they operate in the same city as Avengers Tower and would have been heard of and tracked down to some extent, based on how public the major events of the show storylines are. What are your theories? Love & Respect, Namzor

Samo Rozman

do you think we will see new shows moving forward ie combining these character's together or new characters with their own show or is this just Netflix handing back the characters to Disney as they want them for their streaming service?

HALLOWEEN SPOILER MODE

I haven't finished the season yet, but I likely will before tomorrow's spoiler mode. My question doesn't have to do with DD Season 3 per se, but the general MTU (Marvel Televised Universe...Idk...I just made this up). With Luke Cage and Iron Fist having a rough 2nd season (Iron Fist 1st Season as well), and their due-ly cancellation there of...What is the future of the Netflix Marvel shows? JJ, DD (thus far), and The Punisher were quite good as far as quality and story-telling go. But with Disney coming out with their own streaming service, are the days of these Netflix Marvel shows on their last leg? While I'd love to see more investment with new characters, even some cross-over with the MCU or AoS...Heck even the first step into crossing in the Fox/FX barrier with Legion....I think the tea leaves are set with these excellent series. Would love to know what you think about Marvel's Future with Netflix. Eternal Love and Respect, drd7of14

drd7of14

What did you think of the episode "Karen"? Were you surprised when you first heard her father telling her not to come home? And do you think he was justified turning her away?

Rory Gladstone

Hi Allies, I've been a hardcore fan of Daredevil and was particularly excited for this season, considering they were adapting the "Born Again" storyline. However, I was quite lagging behind with Marvel's Netflix series. I had finished season 1 of Jessica Jones, half of first season for Luke Cage and totally skipped Iron Fist. I thought I'd just move to Defenders for DD since it was his story I was particularly interested in. I had to force myself through Defenders despite it being just 8 episodes. Maybe it all had to do with the fact that we love the individual stories because of their unique flavour and that was missing in Defenders. It didn't help that the main storyline revolved around the worst Defender. Back to DD season 3 and what a return to form! I hopped on it the moment the show popped up on Netflix and did not leave my seat until i was done. Daredevil S3 went back to the roots of the series, which is crime drama similar to the likes of The Wire. So I ask you guys this, do you think Marvel should totally abandon the Defenders formula considering how much better these characters fare alone? Or is there a possible scenario where this team-up can thrive and build upon the unique tones present in all of these shows?

Udit Singh

I've still got three episodes left, but my question would be; how can they possibly top season 3? It has been absolutely awesome from the start, stronger even than season 1 IMO, and that was a really high bar to begin with. It has the perfect mix of personal demons and great villains to face, a drip-feed of Fisk's plan, Daredevil/Murdoch five steps behind but occasionally leaping ahead, and not one episode so far has felt too long or superfluous, which was exactly how season 1 got things so, so right. Now I finished the whole season I can safely say it was the best quality Marvel Netflix season yet, and easily my favourite season of anything on Netflix, if not of all time. But that only makes it an even tougher act to follow for any season 4.

Do you think Ep.4 prison scene holds up against S1's hallway scene and S2's biker fight? Personally for me, I feel that the fact the prison scene was done in one shot is very impressive

Sticking.

Ville Ranto

How impressed were you with Bullseye's skills? I was astonished at how dangerous and cool they had managed to make something as simple as just throwing things look like. Extremely lethal and accurate! Really loved how it looked and sounded and how fast it simply was. So many times I was caught off guard and actually shouted out loud something as a reaction to how painful and surprising a throw had again been. So many different objects. Improvisation to the max.

Ville Ranto

Sticking this, hopefully.

Ville Ranto

A big aspect of Matt Murdock is his faith and religion. How did you like his conversations with Sister Maggie about this topic, especially early on in the season before the mom reveal? I really liked these moments as they dug so deep into the character. Maggie was also an excellent addition to the cast, loved her biting remarks here and there, same as Matt's dry jokes to her.

Ville Ranto

The greatest and most ambitious hand to hand action sequences you'll ever witness on TV. This season has a 11 minute one-take shot. Enough said :p

Chris Leroux

Agreed, but the pacing on Daredevil is MILES ahead of the other shows. With Luke Cage and Jessica Jones especially I felt like 95% of the plot was wrapped up a few episodes in and then the rest was stretched. At least with Karen they didn't drag out her arc too too much. Yes there were multiple scenes where she revealed the truth, but in fairness they were short and to the point. I don't think that the future of Daredevil will put into question killing anymore. "Saving Matt" was a big theme to this season, and to me the eulogy he gave and the restoration of "Nelson, Murdock, & Page" cements that the future will be about building a positive image for Daredevil.

Chris Leroux

Turk Barrett didn't make a cameo this season (which is insanely rare). What's your head canon as to what he's been up to?

Chris Leroux

I love this question. Wrapping up Luke Cage would definitely be easier than Iron Fist. As sad as it is to say though, I think killing off Claire might be a great way to reunite and refocus everyone, especially given that Rosario Dawson wants to move on.

Chris Leroux

Oh I think he'll definitely start wearing it again the next time we see him. This season was about going back to basics, and I think the next season (should we be so fortunate) will be about restoring Daredevil's image.

Chris Leroux

Where do you think Karen's story will go from here, given that her growing relationship with The Punisher puts a lot of the moral ambiguity into question. Because she's killed, she sometimes sees it as an option, so will she learn to accept Punisher's ways or will she try to "save him" like Foggy tried doing with Matt?

Chris Leroux

How do you feel about Matt never wearing the red Daredevil costume? I've always preferred the black mask one in the show but it is strange to never put the title character in his iconic costume.

Austin Brackeen

Huber, I know you love third parties in a conflict. Even though they weren't always on all different sides, what do you think of the three way fight between Daredevil, Kingpin, and Bullseye at the end? In my opinion, one of the best three way fights I've ever seen.

Jason I.

If you were given the chance to wrap up Luke Cage and Iron Fists arcs in Daredevil Season 4 or Jessica Jones season 3 how would you do it?

Jordan Buitendyk

I really liked it, I think the worst part were the imaginary Wilson and Dad Murdock, at first I thought Matt was going mad but I didn't like it because it felt out of nowhere and just triggered at convinience for the plot, but in the end I think it was him just imagining conversations with those persons in a way of how he would think things would have gone or will and not ghosts appearing in his mind but I'm not sure. Felt weird, rushed and opportunistic.

Mega Sackman

I started watching Daredevil when a friend showed me the one shot fight scene from season 1. I think in Episode 4, the one shot fight scene escalated in a different way from Season 1 & 2. The fight transitioned into a talking scene with Vic, then transitioned again into an escape scene. I thought it was an interesting way to not just do another long fight in various hallways and instead have Matt Murdock clearly more vulnerable. Do you think escalation of action scenes in series or sequels is important? Do you think changes or escalation in a character's combat prowess can be used as a tool for character development?

I just want to say this is the best season so far, I loved bingeing it. But I do want to throw a little spice into the mix with the only thing that bothered me this season and probably all the netflix marvel shows. I am one of the people who believe they need to cut it down to 6 episodes and give us a meaty fast paced trill ride. My one gripe is explaining every single plot element or character trait at least 3-5 times once per episode. For example, Karen brings up her brother to his mom, to foggy, gets a flash back episode and then after that episode brings it up again to Murdock, It's basically us hearing the same thing over and over, which works sometimes but it happens a lot, where they have the exact same point to make but never know how to move past that point. I know this is not the worst thing, it just sometimes feels like they need to explain to us the plot and make sure we are following along. I don't know if I want to watch a 4th season of daredevil deciding if he wants to kill people or not, it happens every season. The guy needs to make up his mind already. I think this would not be so bad if all the other shows didn't do the same exact thing. I will call this the should I, shouldn't I, plot device.

THIS IS A TEST POST, IF MY EARLIER POST IS STILL THERE PLEASE IGNORE THIS ONE. A few questions for you guys: 1) What did you think about Bullseyes/Agent Poindexters/Dex's Backstory? did you have sympathy for him?? How long did it take for you to no longer sympathize? 2) Luke Cage and Iron Fist both ended with the protagonists finding themselves in very foreign territory, and Daredevil ended with things mostly returning to the status quo, at this point are you more interested to see where Luke Cage and Ironfist would have gone? or where Daredevil will go next? 3) Final Question: Huber, How about that final fight scene in the Penthouse?

Do you think the arc of Ben Poindexters character could have had more weight if Netflix didn't basically reveal everything in the promos? Was it always going to be obvious? Is internet discussion surrounding casting info/rumors enough to torpedo your surprise for a larger percentage of the audience? Or was it really never going to be a surprise? Or is this just the age old problem of weighing story details and story hook in marketing.

Wow, Patreon already ate my post 2 minutes after I posted it, Lets try this again: A few questions for you guys: What did you think about Bullseyes/Agent Poindexters/Dex's Backstory? did you have sympathy for him?? Luke Cage and Iron Fist both ended with the protagonists finding themselves in very foreign territory, and Daredevil ended with things mostly returning to the status quo, at this point are you more interested to see where Luke Cage and Ironfist would have gone? or where Daredevil will go next? Final Question: Huber, How about that final fight scene in the Penthouse?

I think he fits a tv/comic format more then a movie format.

Hey there, For me, there is a struggle for time and what shows I can fit in to my rotation. Would you gentlemen mind starting with your best 10 second elevator pitches for this series. I haven't started yet, but I hear good things. Respectfully, Morgan Mohalla

Morgan Mohalla

I think the Karen episode would have fit better as a Flashback after she tried to call her dad. It felt like it broke up the flow of the season so close to the Climax.

Fisk is a Daredevil villain but I always associated him more with Spider-Man. Is it alright that Spider-Man will never be able to go against Fisk in this Marvel Universe?

So let’s dive into what I expect will be the divisive episode #10 Karen. The episode focusing almost entirely on Karen Page’s past. Do you think this episode killed the flow of the season? Did you enjoy it? Unlike a similar late episode in Strnger things season 2 I felt this one worked. To me I thought this was critical to not only show that Karen was never this miss perfect character like everyone thought from the start but it also played into the fundamental theme of the whole season which was redemption. Plus as a comic nerd seeing them taking parts of Karen’s junkie days and selling Matt’s identity from the notable Born Again story and incorporating a lot into her past was interesting. Bonus question: What do you think will happen to poor Melvin? Double bonus question if you’re looking for more questions, favorite fight scene this season?
