Red Dead Redemption 2 Review

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwm1TA8NJXk

The bad news is, no Cup of Jones today. The good news is, in just a few hours y’all can start playing a truly incredible open-world game. I tried not to get my expectations too high going into this. Rockstar has made storylines I haven’t necessarily cared about in the past, and I initially got weird vibes from Arthur as a protagonist. My concerns swiftly galloped away once I really understood how this world works, and I’m honestly overwhelmed at the work on display here.

In the early chapters, I kept waiting for that moment that would clarify where the story was headed, but soon realized that the campaign is really a collection of so many tiny moments. These can be woven into the central narrative, or just thrown at you while you make your way across the map. Every time it’s unpredictable, and after all the hours I’ve put in I still haven’t reached a spot where I’m not surprised by something popping up.

I know some of you are concerned about spoilers, even in this brief post, and I exercised a lot of restraint in what I chose to capture, and eventually what I chose to put in this video. There are so many towns, missions, and moments that you won’t see here, and some events that bring a smile to my face when I think about them, and new players coming across them starting today.

I can’t wait to hear everyone’s endings, and start a second play-through, and learn more about online. There’s still so much stuff that remains unchecked on my various lists. I’ll probably be playing this offline for weeks as well.

So, yee haw, everybody. Take your time. Choose the scenic route when you can. Don’t skip the end credits. Bring a rifle or shotgun along even when you think you won’t need it. And have fun!

That comment aged well. :D

Agreed. I'm struggling to understand all the 10s for this game. It's going to be extremely divisive amongst users due to the decisions R* have made in an effort to capture authenticity. I'm about 10 hours in so far and a lot of the animations, crafting, movement speed is really starting to drag. Also, it's not doing anything new. It's mission structure is EXACTLY the same as GTA V. Yes the game is beautiful and immersive and authentic. But it's quite literally GTA V in a western skin yet way less fun due to the core design decisions.

What a disappointment this game has been. The controls are awful. They emphasised realism at the expense of everything else. The gunplay feels worse than Red Dead 1 somehow, movement is poor, and having all these long animations for everything just makes playing an absolute chore.

Could this be a contender for GOTY and Q4 2018 GOAT? Curious if the other allies will enjoy it as much as Jones

Man, the four first hours of RDR2 are so not indicative of the rest of the game. They fell right into the tuturial trap door.

David Halvorsen

No mention at Al about the bugs ??

Pass. Hard to make a bad western, but I can't pretend to care about this story.

Great

Man, I really wish more Allies wrote a little something extra like this. After you mentioned it on a recent Cup of Jones, then comparing it to the Blops 4 post I can't help but wonder what everyone else's thoughts on their review is like. You should keep nudging them to do it at least once in a while haha

Impressive game.

No interest in this game but man did I love this review. If anything, it helped slightly peak my interest do to how well it was presented. Man, GOW, Spidey, and RDR2 all fighting for that goat. It will be bloody. Great review Jones, I am very impressed with the professionalism. As much as I truly do not care for Red Dead games, I see no reason why this game didn't deserve a 10 according to your review. Glad people are enjoying this game.

Jeffrey Tessar

I'm not even playing this game and I'm hyped FOR Jones and the allies. lol

Raven Perez

Sorry God of War, but Red Dead just rolled into town and shot up the saloon. They rode off into the sunset with your Game of the Year 2018 award.

Gump The Great

That montage introducing the graphics/art direction segment . . .

Cloisterance

Characters might be what make or break this game for me, too. Despite the honor system, violence seems to be the catch-all solution to problems. Hard to RP if your only options are to shoot someone in the front or back. That said, I'm looking forward to checking it out, maybe in a few weeks when the conversation around the game stabilizes.

Cloisterance

I'm seeing a smidge of negativity about some of RDR2's mechanics. It's not everyone's cuppa jones. GoW's focus and polish might win out in the end. But man, RDR2 looks deep.

Cloisterance

So glad you liked it Jones :)

Fogtober

Great review.

Novus Operandi

They tried to play it off in the group stream when Kyle asked. Ian also said he wasn’t editing any reviews but we knew jones was editing it himself. There was always the off chance I guess since he seemed to be getting the code close to launch.

Soul

Yeah it’s optional really which is nice. I didn’t like the ranch n hunting stuff in rdr1. The camp duties screamed ranch duties to me so it’s good to hear.

Soul

I really wish I was more excited about this. I may just get it in the end for the heck of it. I’ve also seen other videos saying the immersive stuff is somewhat optional and you can still have a good time focusing on the story. Obviously others will like this more than I do just like with rdr1. All I can really hope for is that I care about more characters this time around.

Soul

Glad to hear that managing the camp, hunger, etc isn't too overwhelming. that was my biggest fear with this game. Im stoked to see what the online portion has to offer!

Danni-H4

I'm excited about jumping into this one, though it also makes me a little sad that GoW might hit the same wall as Horizon did where it wins no awards and gets blind-sided by this single game. Looking forward to this either way!

Vin Hill

I may actually play this after all. Great review Jones!

Auri

I got chills. Brandon you are a master of the craft of reviews!

Jones gave Red Dead 2 a 10/10? I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you!

A game this beautiful is just begging to be on PC. But I'm getting it on the X for now. Probably worth double dipping on PC once it's available and half off.

Joseph Caruso

Maaaan, so many things this year tempting me to get a PS4. Even if this comes to PC I fear my machine won't be able to do it justice! RDR1 is one of my favourite games of all time and this looks immense.

Samuel Cardwell

So glad to hear you enjoyed this one! Such a great review. Some good copy here--and a much better read than other reviews I saw this morning.

Cloisterance

My EB Games is letting me pickup tonight at 9pm EST, I can't wait

I assume it's30fps

Michael James Hudson-kohlmeyer

So since you didnt mention it (if I missed it, please accept my apology), I assume the frame rate is always at a steady 60 and there are no micro transactions in the game?

erni

It's funny how this game is pushed away from me. I was planning to play it on release, but I'm playing The Shadow of Tomb Raider now and it's too good to stop. I also planned to make subtitles on the same day, but my today's evening is busy and Ben wrote a massive review for CoD.

#Bloodwasright Only Jones

Wow I really didn’t think this would be up today! Awesome stuff! I still don’t know how I feel about some of the simulation stuff I’m glad it’s there and I understand its purpose, it’s just not something I’d think I’d love actually playing, But I’m sure it won’t overly bother me too much. I’m also interested in the campaign because Rockstar Games campaigns have trouble grabbing me emotionally so I hope I can feel some attachment to the main character. Very excited to play this I have really high expectations!
