Frame Trap - Episode 68 "Guns and Glory"

I’m in the epilogue now and i agree completely with Kyle. The gameplay is boring and it is a slog to me. It doesn’t help that all the missions feel on rails with very little player agency. You have to do everything exactly the way rockstar wants. Every now and then you hit a button to make a choice, but that’s not real agency. That said, the story is so fantastic. It’s worth it for me to push through....until the epilogue. There’s a ton to like about the game but the most important part, gameplay, falls short. You’re not alone Bossman.

About RDR2... I strongly disagree with the opinion the the gameplay sucks. I can agree that it requires some learning but I'm playing it with all assists off and I love it. The thing is that when a game doesn't respect some popular templates some people have trouble getting out of that frame of expectations. Similar thing happened to The Witcher 3 combat. As for Kyle's attitude towards the game is not that surprising that he is going against basically everything he stands for to "attack" the game. He was negative about it even before he played it.

Ben, Kyle, and Huber must not follow the scene. Sakurai went out of his way to make Smash "for everybody". In fact, he openly said he doesn't like the competitive crowd because it's a small subset of the playerbase at large. If Smash was "for hardcore", they would have made a successor to Melee a long time ago. Sakurai made it pretty clear that he's catering the series to casual gamers.

Tabata said he wanted his new IP to be a multi-media production. In the report of their write-off, Square said that Luminous Productions was being steered exclusively towards AAA game production. This is directly against what Tabata wanted so he left because he felt strong enough in his multi-media ambitions.

I hope Blood shows up at the smash tourney and wins it lol.

It's a real shame you're not experiencing more of what RDR2's story and writing have to offer Kyle.

Really interesting takes on RDR2. I’m having the issue I have in every single open world game. If there’s a dot on the map I need to make that dot go away. All the fog of war, all the random quests. Like it takes me longer than I want because I have this internal need to make all those blips go away. Don’t really find myself getting lost in the world because I’m always making one of blips go away. That said some of the side quests do have some really cool little stories. I never find myself randomly wandering around with no aim though.

Ben, I want to share a fun made up game within a game that my friend made up for SmashBros. It's called the RACE. Everyone starts on random, that picks the character you start with. The only way to change characters is to win with the current character you are using. Only the winner of the match can progress. You must choose a character to the left or right of the one you win as. When you reach the edge of a row you have the option of jumping to the other side of the row or jumping to any other edge character. The goal is to play as every character and win as every character. First person who wins as every character wins the race. As you can imagine this race can go on for HOURS since the roster has grown SO MUCH. An abridged version can be a set number of characters... (First to 10, first to 20 that sort of thing.) I love this mode so much and it gets you familiar with all the characters. I was once stuck on pit for 3 hours... it was horrible but I really got to know his moves and how he works on a new level. Maybe the allies could try this out one day... I think it would be pretty fun.

Really interesting RDR2 conversation. I equate Kyle's view that the game is overwritten to Game of Thrones in that I found the books a slog and felt Martin needed a stronger Editor and I much preferred to watch the TV show. Then again I know lots of people who loved the books and the level of detail. Of course with books you only have the text and your imagination and with games there is a much greater active level of immersion. Full disclosure, I've just started the game but maybe because of the nature of the controls and being constantly aware of them and the prescriptive nature of the activities in terms of the controls, our awareness of both of these things could break the immersion for some and affects enjoyment of the story elements?

Thanks for the tip Huber. Immediately bought the shotgun and heads are exploding.

Just wanted to comment on a question they had here. I get that they used Smash Bros Ultimate as an example of how new players to an existing franchise can be left out of the marketing/hype because devs often don't explain the basics of their game. However(!!), it was a bad example because the Smash Ultimate announcement detailed the rules of the game right at the offset, explaining that you have to hit opponents to increase their percentage to knock them off the stage.

Well said Huber (about the budgets)

There's a three-hour stream for all of your Quiet Man needs. Not much else to cover. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/333408523

If you told me at the beginning of the year that the next Tetris game would make me cry and be my GOTY I would have laughed at you but here we are.

Megan Linart

Huber is right. The pump action shotgun is great. Especially with slug and explosive rounds.

Shoulderguy

How do you have Huber and Kyle on and not talk about the Quiet Man??

Chris Park

Sweetens the Sunday blues!
