Friend Code: August 2018 Smash Direct Reactions

Now I think we should all agree as a planet to call the Super Nintendo "el Super"

Easy Allies

Wait, wasn't there a timeline released a little while ago that made Zelda MM a dream of Skull Kid?

Who at Nintendo of America circa 1985 came up with the name Nintendo Entertainment System ? Wouldn't they be the authority on how to pronounce the abbreviated form? Maybe somebody with the journalistic skills to track that person down and get their hot take.

Gerred Evatt

This conversation about the pronunciation of NES is so funny. Here in México, We just called the NES a "Nintendo", the SNES was "el Super" and we called the N64 the "ultra", even so the name had to be changed prior to release, either that or "el sesenta y cuatro" (literally the 64). Still there are people around that refer to any console or videogame as a "Nintendo".

César Villa

FamiCom. That's the name we used when I was growing up. We also say "essness" for SNES. 2 syllables. Easier to pronounce. I am so out of the loop on Nintendo stuff that I didn't even know that this is a issue until this episode. haha

What if Majora's Mask was a microcosm of the Zelda Universe and each new generation is bound to repeat the same destiny over and over again. Seriously I like when the games have a direct connection, but also like that it is contained to just three games (Oot, MM, WW) (WW, PH, ST), (Zelda 1, Zelda 2), (MC, Four Swords), (ALttP, LA). I just think lore can get out of control when intended, just look at Kingdom Hearts, Assassins' Creed, or Halo. Zelda is kinda like self contained arcs.

Good podcast Damiani and crew.

Bizarre and criminal.

Just because iwata say N.E.S doesn't invalidate the other way. He might say it the other way in other conversations (e.g. privately). It's not like he can say both ways at the same time live on stage. The only way you can use this argument is to specifically ask the CEO if the other way is wrong. Otherwise, it remains possible to pronounce it as nes, snes, etc.

Andrew Chalmers

I 100% agree that the selection of FF music is criminal. This is one of the most prolific franchises for music in gaming history and only having two tracks is lame. I find myself thinking back to FFXV and how many awesome tracks I was able to unlock there and it just makes me more disappointed in the Smash selection. You guys probably have the right of it in that it’s a Square Enix thing, because I can’t imagine Nintendo simply making such an easily noticeable oversight.

I was honored to be included into discussion with my question in regards the TLoZ timeline :). Thanks a lot Damiani and to all you guys for giving your opinions. Kyle and Simmons really give some insightful info. And btw, I really enjoy the stories on most TLoZ games on their own, and you guys are right, Wind Waker did payed respects to Ocarina of Time with a great plot. In my case I prefer to enjoy them with their own story, and I'll cheer for any kameo or hints to other Zelda games as well, but I'd rather not dig too much or I'll end up dissapointed again!! PS: The meaning of Pura Vida is a very common phrase we use in Costa Rica in order express optimism against anything. We say it everyday for cheering up someone or something It's just fine for us. Think of it as Hakuna Matata or your beautiful phrase "Love & Respect". You can find more to that on googling "Pura Vida meaning" :).

First time commenting but I just don't get the outright refusal to see how the Wind Waker timeline would lead to BOTW. To me it's the one that makes the most sense. You can say theres a new Hyrule discovered in PH, but what about the flooded Hyrule having the waters receed overtime, and settlers returning to the land in which they originated? It would explain why landmarks from games before WW were so well preserved, why theres topography in the map that can match a few of the islands of WW, afterall they were mountains to begin with. Rito existing wouldnt rule out the Zora either, as games that take place outside of hyrule also shows Zora existing. It was only the ones who remained in the original Hyrule that were forced such evolution.

Great to see Simmons back as a guest, and he definitely added a ton to the discussion.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Timelines Adventures

Knuckles just doesn't make sense as a Sonic echo anymore with how he's been distanced from Sonic over the years, and even going solely with Sonic 3 & Knuckles version of the character, you still have to make him glide instead of the way Sonic moves through the air and change a couple other properties that probably go beyond what an Echo character is. Don't worry though. Just wait for Shadow Echo to be revealed.

MBUN

I really enjoyed hearing about all of his contributions to Nintendo. It became apparent that he's responsible for a lot of the individual little things that I enjoy about the characters and lore of each thing he's got his hands on. Majora's Mask sidequests? Rosalina's story? Best parts of those games

VGJunky

I got a kick out of the Wii Fit Trainer's face bit. I like details like that

VGJunky

They just need to make Hyrule Warriors canon as it involves the timelines melding into one universe. Breath of the Wild takes place after the ruined world of Hyrule Warriors. Easy.

Phazonmasher

Simmons really classes up the joint.

Sad I missed submitting for the Zelda Timeline discussion, but I'm totally down for a "Super Sentai"-level, multi-generational, and multi-dimensional crossover wherein all the Links from the games before BotW work together to collapse and converge the timeline. Aonuma said he wanted the next Zelda to be BotW + Multiplayer and what cooler way to do it than, instead of all the Links just looking the same, they each have their respect unique skills and items allowing for different solutions based on the team ups the players bring.

Pie in the sky wish is Crono for Smash, with final smash being a different 3 person tech with 2 random CT party members every time

VGJunky

I, too, think that Lyn should be playable in Smash over Chrom. But that would require effort and a new moveset to do her justice, so nevermind. With the roster of Fire Emblem as saturated as it is, plus the assist trophy still in, probably 0% chance now. Knuckles would have been cool as a Sonic echo It makes sense that Konami is more free with their Castlevania stuff, because they don't try to make any use of it at all.

VGJunky

Yeah, time for the SMASH TALK!

Correction: Matt's perception of the RE team being a skeleton crew of the past talent of Capcom is quite common, but not actually true. Most people get too attached to Shinji Mimaki's and Kamiya's roles inside the franchise, however, there's still plenty of employees that started with the first Resident Evil title while working on the series, and as a matter of fact, within high positions inside the RE team. Masachika Kawata was known for a long time (and could still be) as the franchise's producer, having his first experience as a "stage CG lead designer" on the original Resi 1. Jun Takeuchi (who was recently the executive producer behind 7) worked with "character models/motion" on Resident Evil 1 as well. Yasuhiro Anpo (one of the two directors currently working on REmake 2) was a "software system engineer" on RE1. And last but not least, Kazunori Kadoi (the other director behind Resident Evil 2 Remake) was assigned as both "system planner" and member of the "camera team" within the OG Biohazard staff. He even worked as a "designer" on Mega Man Legends later.

Loved the Zelda talk. Matt was blowing my mind with the insights about Koizumi's input to the series.

Hey my question was asked :), but figured I'd clarify a few things. As you guessed my question was asked before the direct and after watching it I was very impressed and considered it far better than the boring E3 presentation (I saw that look Kyle. 13 minutes going through each character pointing out details such as how Wii fit trainers face is slightly different is boring!). However it slightly enhances the point I was trying, but failed to to convey, that they could have taken some of the content from this direct, added it to the E3 presentation to make it less tedious and taken the rest and put it in the next direct that is surely going to come before release. Admittedly Nintendo know far better than me about marketing their own products, and no doubt the next direct will be incredibly impressive and make me eat my words again.

Great guest this time, and I also thought the RE 2 discussion was weird last time, so thanks for the explaination Damiani. I'd really rather have guests like this than when you do Skype/audio guest, which were a bit poorly recorded.

I'd argue Dark Samus is american made too and Diddy Kong and King K. Rool are from the UK. Also Dark Samus was in every Metroid Prime game and the main villain in MP3.

Also as a kid in France, we did say Nes rather than N.E.S. having no notion of acronyms or official way to pronounce it as ads were scarce, and maybe overlooked by PRs in france. The only somewhat official source, if Nintendo of America mattters, was the Nintendo Power magazine. So I guess the first time I heard french people say Nes or rather Super Nes, was for the DKC vcr making of tape in 1994.

They need to bring Captain N to Smash, creating a meta-chronology to Smash. Making the Nesu occidental mascot's world the official world in which it all happens.

Why did no one say Convergence theory when discussing Breath of the Wild. Just like Dark Souls 3 all time lines converge like the river theory. Time can break away but comes back together thus all races came with their current looks to the end of times. Convergence
