Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Easy Allies Preview

I dearly love the Tomb Raider from 2013, and then didn’t check out Rise of the Tomb Raider at all. So I jumped at the opportunity to play more of Shadow of the Tomb Raider before launch to get an idea how how this series has evolved since the reboot. I don’t know where this game is going to fit into my schedule considering the crazy Fall lineup that’s almost upon us, but I’m definitely impressed with the level of complexity on display here. The jungle is dense, civilization is booming, and the contraptions you have to manipulate and survive (that I sadly can’t show you), all have fine layers of detail. I wanted to do more side objectives than the preview time allowed, and I totally forgot to visit the store in Kuwaq Yaku, so there are still elements I haven’t explored. Hopefully this glimpse into the beginning of Shadow of the Tomb Raider helps you if you need more convincing to spend time with it, but doesn’t get to close to the early-game spoilers.

If you like Tomb Raider games you are going to love this one

I still need to play Rise of the Tomb Raider. So many good games so little time.

Well said! I agree completely.

I am soooo ready for this game

This is the only game I’m excited for this year

Sorry to hear you slept on Rise of the Tomb Raider. It was fantastic. Better than the reboot. If this is as big a jump in quality as Rise was, I'll definitely find time for it

I played the first two Day One of release but I'm sorry I will still be playing Spider-Man when this comes out most likely.

Already purchased. Was so-so on 2013 but Rise really hit the spot for me - wide maps, Metroid-style exploration and backtracking, cool Tombs and traversal mechanics, and satisfying skill progression. Rise had some cooler environments and openness than people probably give it credit for, and it doesn't dump the same level of miscellaneous junk on you like in the Ubisoft style of open world games. Closest comparison I can make is God of War, which structurally feels like it borrowed quite a lot from the Tomb Raider reboots. Not that surprising given that Cory used to be with Crystal Dynamics. I find the Uncharted comparisons unfair in a lot of ways as well, since clearly they borrow from each other and it's not some one-way street. There are many differences that make Tomb Raider distinct and unique in its own right, the focus on exploration being one of them, and even where they're similar it's odd to use the term negatively when Uncharted has some of the best 3d traversal, platforming, and setpieces in the business. It's like how people were negatively talking about God of War for being too close to The Last of Us, one of the greatest games of last generation. Looking forward to seeing what the different team can do with Tomb Raider for this entry

Sorry Brandon I trust you completely and I have no doubt this game will be great. But no amount of praise is going to convince me to buy this my fall is so jammed packed with games and 10 hour work shifts. I don’t care enough about this franchise and I never have. I’m so happy for the fans of this franchise and that this game is promising.
