Detectives - Reaction Shots Discussion Prompt Sept 2018

Hello film lovers!

Let's talk about detectives!  Detectives, both police and private eyes, are some of Huber and my favorite characters in film, so let's talk about em!

Some faves include: Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Searching, BlackkKlansman, Chinatown, Brick, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Rear Window, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Big Lebowski, Out of the Past, Vertigo, Memento, Mulholland Drive, Seven, The Silence of the Lambs, L.A. Confidential, Zodiac, The Conversation

Detectives are such an effective narrative tool because they are an audience analogue who's job is actually to find out more, they often learn things along with the audience which makes these types of films very engaging and intense.

What is your favorite detective film?

Who is your favorite detective, are they from your favorite film?

What cinematic tools do detective films often employ?  For example, Chinatown has many shots over Gittes' shoulder, so we feel like we're discovering things along with him or even a step behind him.

Often times detectives run afoul of dirty cops, often within their own station, what's your favorite dirty cop example, and what do you think dirty cops signify in stories like these?

What's your favorite zinger or one liner a detective has said in a film?

Detective films are often Noir films, and as such have the classic tropes like Femme Fatales, let's talk about when those tropes are reversed, what are your favorite female detectives?

Detective stories often have that "AH HA!" moment where Take On Me starts playing and they remember a clue from earlier in the film, what's the best Ah Ha moment?

I really like active films that encourage and reward you for looking for tiny details (Searching is great about this) what other films reward the attentive eye?  What films are almost like puzzles in their own right?
