Top 10 Unlikable Protagonists

Couldn't disagree more. I found her rebellious attitude and confused teenage emotions to be very endearing. Seemed like an interesting, refreshing personality not often seen in video game protagonists.

Well I guess you’re a thing of the past then. Duke nukem used sexist humor and that’s just not funny anymore. It’s jarring and uncomfortable.

Sorry, but if Duke Nukem is a thing from the past, so am I... People always say Duke Nukem and Leisure Suit Larry don’t belong in our time, but I still love those games and the humor.

Generally a pretty good list, and I'm glad to see Vaan on there. I'm playing through Zodiac age and...man he's super grating. I can see why some folks are confused about Welch being included. I wouldn't count her as a protagonist. More of a friendly/allied NPC.

I absolutely cannot stand the Far Cry series. I hated FC2, but friends assured me FC3 was improved and I played 5 minutes and I hated the protagonist so much. It made an already tasteless series so much more tasteless by turning some white frat bro into a mass murderer. Glad it made the list.

This list feels stuck somewhere between Top 10 Bad Role Models and Top 10 Unlikeable Characters. Some entries are definitely characters who aren't remotely likeable for how boring and bland they are or how grating everything they do is, but then you have characters you basically admit in the video are somehow charismatically likeable, despite the terrible people they are, who don't really belong on the list but could for sure work perfectly on a Top 10 Bad Role Models list. I'd say Jones isn't cracking down hard enough on strict definitions, but then I also wonder if he's responsible for Trevor's entry, which would be a direct example of this lax definition harming the overall quality of the list. All that aside, this list does feel like it had a good amount of thought poured into choosing interesting entries, so I commend yall for that, even if I don't think you can force people to stop liking Duke Nukem by simply declaring him unlikeable and showing Duke being the laughable, deep-voiced, macho one-liner spewing stereotype he is. I'm sure I'm not the only person who remembers "Huber Plays Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition - Duke Nukem Lives!", and he clearly wouldn't have gone out of his way to play that if he really found the character truly unlikeable. You can still find ways to discourage that kind of behavior in your audience without lying to yourselves and the viewers about how entertaining the characters exhibiting it can be.

Good list but I do really disagree with Vaan being 4th he gives the duke a run for his money. I know some people got a chuckle from the duke back in the day. I can’t think of anyone that wanted vaan around.

Does Welch really qualify as a protagonist? Isn't she more like an NPC? All the other characters on the list seemed to be the main character (or one of the main characters) in the game, but Welch isn't even playable, right?

This feels like it should have been a Top 10 Worst Protagonist list. There is an odd mix of badly written, unlikeable characters, and well written, unlikeable characters.

Again with the Zelda BS... haha; no; this is a great top 10 ! This is why i love you guys ! I found the NPC from Star Ocean a bit out of left field (because it's a NPC) but i get it ! I would have put The Big Bad Wolf from Wolf Among Us in there somewhere :)

Glad for the clarification of Welch in just The Last Hope. Welch is generally one of the more charming NPCs in Star Ocean, but they definitely didn't do her any favors in The Last Hope.
