September Box Peek Update

Happy October! Awooo! First off, I can finally announce the Box Peek Season 1 premiere dates.

Episode 1 - Friday, October 26th at 1pm ET/10am PT
Episode 2 - Monday, October 29th at 1pm ET/10am PT
Episode 3 - Monday, November 5th at 1pm ET/10am PT
Episode 4 - Monday, November 12th at 1pm ET/10am PT
Episode 5 - Monday, November 19th at 1pm ET/10am PT

At the same time these videos go live on YouTube, each episode will also premiere on Twitch, followed by a live Q&A with yours truly. At this time I can't imagine cutting together a highly-narrated Behind the Scenes video once this is all done, so this might be the best I can offer. I'll bring props and drawings.

I'm planning to cut a trailer that will premiere on Tuesday, October 23rd during our group stream. Hopefully it will communicate the information above simply. I've actually done an audio cut of this already because I have a song I really like, but I think I might trash it for something tonally closer to Box Peek. I got a few weeks.

Production Update:
Episode 5's edit isn't done yet but should be by the week's end. From there I have a lot of tinkering I'll be doing to the rest of the episodes. For instance, I still haven't settled on what the Peekref voice should sound like and I've been trying different audio effects out between episodes. It's time to commit. Another thing I've been putting off for a long time is shooting the episode title cards, and like much of Box Peek I'm not sure the idea I have will actually work.
Editing a trailer is tough because there's so much I don't want to show yet but it would also be very boring if it's just scenes from the episode that's already available online today. Part of me wants to shoot original scenes but that could easily turn into another month of work. I have a couple of ideas, but really I want this to come last after I have 5 solid episode edits that I'm proud of.

Behind the Scenes Thoughts:
I'm nervous! An annoying part of this series' long run of delays is that maybe it inherently builds up a level of anticipation that this small-scale project was never meant to reach. I spend a lot of time thinking about what the audience will think. I mean part of that is important. It's like when you're telling jokes, there's this balance of not being so obvious that your audience sees the punchline coming (or worse--is just bored) but also not thinking too many steps ahead/sideways to humor that nobody gets. You want to have these check-ins to make sure everyone is with you at every point along the way. It's also like in game design, when you don't want to give players all the cool special moves at once since it could be intimidating, but you also have to roll them out quickly and consistently enough to keep from becoming boring.
But also I think a lot about the criticisms the audience will have. It's like reading the comments before they're written. Beyond "the audio sucks", "he clearly shook the table there", and "whoa that edit is so amateur bro" I'm mostly concerned about people getting bored.
Throughout this year I've shifted around on how big of an event I want Box Peek's launch to be. For a time I figured that since I'm putting so much time into this that it should be a huge freakin' deal when the show rolls out. Right now I'd almost prefer to keep it low-key. I think of how Concrete Genie was the only new game announced at last year's PSX and this poor game was thrust onto a live stage with larger expectations than it was ever designed to fulfill. That might be Box Peek.
The Behind the Scenes part of these posts are usually technical, so I'll try to come back around to it: I think all of these thoughts tie directly into the trailer. When I sit down to plan it out, I'll have to keep the following things in mind:
- Does it communicate the premiere information clearly?
- Is it entertaining?
- Does it disrupt my intended flow? (I guess Spoiling Stuff goes here too)
- Is it making Box Peek a bigger deal than it needs to be?
- Is the song cool?
It's nuts. It's a lot to think about, and honestly I think I think too much about it. Podcasts, live streams, and reactions can be so freeing because I'm never locked into this over-consideration, but at the same time I find Box Peek, sloppy and silly as it is, more gratifying to produce than anything else.

Alright it's about 7am and it's clear I'm losing the plot here. (Lately I've been trying to harness my nocturnal powers, to mixed results) I will make another post for the Season 1 trailer and keep you up on any forthcoming details, and then of course we'll have an eventful monthly update at the end of this month.

Thank you again for your patience and support.

Love & Respect,
Kyle

Can't wait to see it Kyle, I loved the sneak peek first episode.

James Bennett

This is awesome.

It's happening

Really happy these are coming out on Mondays...it's going to be one of my days off for the next three months. Also the season finale will be the day before my birthday. Pretty nice present! Thanks for continuing to work on the series Kyle, I really love everything about what I've seen so far, and I hope getting it out there will feel wonderful for you and bring you a lot of success.

Gaming Groove

Congratulations Kyle! I'm happy you've reached this point and can finally begin to see the finish line. When it premiers people will love it, don't worry.

Episode 2 on my birthday?! Perfection.

ToiletDrummer

So excited Kyle!!! Thanks for the update!!!

If the other episodes are as interesting at the first, I can at least say that *I* won't be bored. :-) As for the trailer, may I suggest only using a small amount of footage, with an emphasis on brief glimpses, and filling the rest up with text and voices over a black screen?

TurboChickenMan

I have no tips and could use them myself. I have gotten better at recognizing when I'm out of juice and going to bed but I still have terrible sleeping patterns

Easy Allies

From my understand that's in beta for a select group of channels that we are not a part of, but that might change!

Easy Allies

The filming process of Box Peek is a very personal affair. There's lots of sweating and swearing, experimentation and making mistakes and making messes. Having someone film me as I'm filming is my nightmare

Easy Allies

Can't wait to watch it. Don't worry about expectations too much. Any tips for working through tiredness, waking up early or staying up later for this project? I can use them if you have them. Good luck on the final month before launch ep.

You asked for $2000 for this very experimental project. If people complain about any of these episodes not being Aardman level they need to check themselves. Everyone is here because we want to here the 'Final Bosman' express himself artistically and enthusiastically, the premise of Final Bosman was to be janky and absurd and that is what people gravitate towards. Just keep doing you and the real allies will appreciate it.

Steven Beaumont

The song is very cool. I cant wait to hear Walter white thanks to amanda

Daniel Mogo Sanchez

However it turns out, as long as it has that Bosman charm (which I'm sure it does) we will love it.

About the launch: A fun little story about how I personally handled two movie launches, and how you may look back on your launch in hindsight. I created two feature length films after college. I was a producer/actor/cinematographer on the beer budget productions. I worked with one of my closest friends (who is way too much like you and the similarities are reason I got into The Final Bosman) that wrote and directed. We had the premiere for the first film, a ridiculous comedy, that we were sure everyone would at least have some fun with. We pushed the premiere very hard over MySpace (yeah, it was a while ago), and had about 200 people show up to the premiere at the Hollywood Theater in Portland. It was honestly one of the greatest nights I've had and everyone had an incredible time. The second premiere we had was a Lynchian puzzle movie that we weren't sure people would enjoy. Because of that, we wanted to temper expectations and have a low-key launch. We premiered it again at the Hollywood, but didn't push it and didn't try to get many people out. We ended up with only about 60 people in the theater. Even if those people did like the movie, the launch was a bit of a letdown for everyone. Looking back, we would have much rather had a huge launch with people being disappointed rather than a minor launch. It honestly kind of killed our drive to do it again. Moral of the story, go big, you'll regret it otherwise.

Tyler Travis

I won’t be disappointed. I don’t have any expectations more then it coming from Kyle, it will be cool and entertaining.

Sonny Laguna

I think it's important to remember to take criticism and praise in nearly equal measures. If you're anything like me, you tend to take criticism as a stronger influence than what could potentially be a drowning amount of praise. Just remember that there are people who love the work that you do and are genuinely good at looking things over with a critical eye. In short: try not to allow yourself to be beaten down by negativity. Not many could put forth the amount of effort that you put into this project. L&R and all that.

Daniel Askew

Ohmugurd I'm so excited!

Olf Himself

Not to throw more pressure on, but if possible, you should use the Premiere feature on Youtube when they release.

Deppy! Kyle, one thing i really don't understand... why oh why don't you let Ian do a 'Behind The Scenes' for Box Peek. He could film you a couple of days when you work on it and then he does his own montage for it. No work for you and we'll get to see the process behind it. This seemed like a real no-brainer. I can't believe neither you or Ian thought about this. Thanks, L&R

Sven Van Lathem

Thanks for all your hard work Kyle, can't wait to watch the series

Kyle, ep 1 was awesome and I’m sure the rest will be too. Don’t get so stressed out over it. Hope you’re having fun making the show. Looking forward to it. L&R

Ssup kyle !! Thank you for the full fledged production update and moreover the release dates !! I was very happy when you said end of october might be a reality on one of your streams, but if you feel confident giving us the release schedule you must be so close from your goal now !! I totally understand your fear of how BoxPeek will be received, it's totally normal for any artist to be a little scared about how the public is gonna react to your piece of art. If it can comfort you, it's the same for every artist out there, from graphic design to painting to music production or video producing. Everybody doubts his own abilities / talent, and in your situation; it's even more natural since it's the first time you work on this kind of project. As you said, you feel laid back on podcasts or streams cause you know that stuff by heart, it's the comfort zone, you know what your worth in that area of expertise. With boxpeek, it's brand new, it's not your #1 talent so once again, don't put too much pressure on yourself as of the public and patrons expectations. I think most of us are amazed you took the opportunity to try new things and you got our full support. Yes there will be people not liking your stuff, but hey, art is subjective buddy !!! Think about all the people who are gonna like it for what it is; and also for the respect of all the work you put in. Sorry for the long post and sentences, but wanted to make sure I give you my full support for your last push Mr Bosman !!!!!! SENDING A LOT OF L&R FROM FRANCE !!!!!!!!!!!

tahitianwarrior

My idea for the trailer, do a final Bosman bit showing you working on Box Peek with one of the allies asking what is it, then when they walk off non chalunt, it zooms into your eyes and you say something like, This will be the greatest show someone has ever seen, then zoom into the characters we have seen with a shadow on those we haven't seen and the BOOM box peek logo!. Can't wait to see how you do!

Jonathan C. George

This is great! I want you to know you have inspired me to try to do the same, but whatever comes from it, no matter how good or how bad it is, you made it!! and I think overall is what you should focus on, most of us love your humor and bits so that we will like it, because we love you. Keep at it, and let us know if it needs to be cooking some more! Love and respect!

Jonathan C. George

If the quality of the show is consistent with everything showcased in the first episode, I know I won’t be bored. Narrative, editing, music/sound aside, just the novelty of hearing my favorite YouTubers voice-acting is enough to keep me enthralled, and as a sculpture major, I appreciate the craft that goes into every shot. Either way, it’s a yes from me, dawg.

Eric Jackson

I'm really excited about the idea of a Q&A after the live premiere. It's one thing you can offer that most 'regular' shows can't, access to the creator of the thing you've just watched. It will be also very exciting to see you react to chat's reaction. Thanks for writing these updates Kyle, keep up the good work.

Mark van Dijken

so excited Kyle!

navyblueprince

I'm so proud of all you've achieved (overcoming both mental and artistic hurdles) to come this far. However Box Peek turns out, you're my biggest professional inspiration, Kyle. Be good to yourself, and if you're in doubt, trust the other Allies opinions - that's what they're there for!

James McCoy

So hyped. Keep up the great work, Kyle :)

Jeremy Pick

Can’t wait for that shonen goodness. Tournament incoming :)

YawnSong

Kyle, you should be extremely proud no matter the outcome. You set out to create something new, and you put an insane amount of work in to make it happen. Following through on something of this scale is half the battle, and you've done it. Not that I speak for the EZA Community as a whole, but I suspect everyone here is very excited for you and can't wait to see a stop-motion series from the zany mind of Kyle Bosman. Max L and max R.

Jon White

Honestly Kyle, I thank you so much for all the work you’re putting into Box Peek! It sounds amazing! It’s only natural that such project would get more anticipation than it was meant to give, don’t be so hard on yourself.... its a big deal for you and us the community. Nonetheless, from episode 1 of Box Peek, I could see the potential! I’m sure it will be great! L&R -DENNIS

Put the final scene in the trailer as punishment. True fans are complete media blackout

Great job Kyle. It's gonna be great, and, if for any reason it isn't, at the very least we had fun waiting for it and it was a learning experience for you to make it. Don't worry, no matter what, we're gonna love it :)

Marcel "Giru017" Frohlich

Congrats, Kyle. I don't think you need to worry about us being unimpressed or over-hyped. The very early test footage looked better than I imagined. The trailer was way better than I imagined. And the first episode was somehow, once again, better than I imagined. It's a dork making an anime with paper cut-outs. Our expectations are in check and yet you always blow us away. I'm sure some will be able to nit-pick, but like with anything good, the audience will probably be too distracted by your fantastic art and writing, and the familiar VO and great music, to notice any little editing issues that may be plain as day to you.

Joseph Caruso

Don't worry, my expectations are firmly in check

VGJunky

I was going to suggest this as well. In an almost kickstarter-esque fashion, which is kinda what Box Peek was in a way, this would greatly humanize the show and temper expectations. In spite of how you may see yourself, you're amazingly expressive and very easy to empathize with, at least on a surface level. I'm sure Keighley also sees this. A quick feel-good intro describing the project and how it came to be would earn you valuable trailer time and allow you to use less Box Peek footage, thus, less spoilers, as well as giving the wider audience the very necessary information of what kind of project this was.

Marcel "Giru017" Frohlich

This is amazing, Kyle. Even if the rest of the season is just 1/10 of what the first episode was, its going to be great! We are already proud of you with what you have achieved thus far. Try to not over think it, we love you!

Sebastian Hall

Just an idea: for the trailer you can shoot yourself talking about Box Peek. I think this will be relatively easy to produce, it will not set very high expectations, but it will still satisfy the fans.

Alexander Zyryanov

I was just about to ask this! 10am/1pm I would imagine a lot of people might be at work like me!

Matt Brookbank

No second thoughts, when opportunity knocks!

Correction: PSX game is called Concrete Genie

Alexander Zyryanov

Excited to see this!

Oliver Higgins

Let the hype train begin! Will the Q&A be archived on YouTube?

Andreas Kleanthous

Thanks so much Kyle I can’t wait!
