Friend Code: What if Nintendo Games Had Achievements?

Kyle and Brad join the panel to judge Patron submitted ideas for achievements for Nintendo games. We rate whether we like them or not, whether or not Nintendo would actually implement them, and how rare would they be.

Friend Code: What if Nintendo Games Had Achievements?

Comments

I know this is like weeks old by now... but I was just watching this episode and I have a buddy who beat Pikmin 3 without losing a single Pikmin the whole game. He restarted the levels many times... but he managed to do it... We both wish there was an achievement or reward for that.

i can't believe no one submitted "Beat Super Mario Bros without warp zone"

Sean Dupree

I LOVE the bringing in clips of live gameplay to settle stuff. That's fantastic and really helps break up the podcast. If this could stay in some form or another that would be great.

This topic was so fun. Even if there wasn't another whole episode dedicated to it, would be such an enjoyable section. Great idea Damiani <3 That Patron achievement show idea though, so much yes.

sirvorn

That was fun lol

Michael Miller

Yea like a monthly show where a group of allies try achievements sent in by patrons or by other allies would be a fun.

John Wingate

That happened to me with Earthbound, and when I finally finished it. I still didn't get the appeal. I also played the NES and Mother 3 games and I enjoyed them more.

"he saw the Pikachu, and he smelled the cash" hahahahaha Brad is so awesome lol

Really liked this Friend Code, a really fun format Damiani. Consider bringing this back for a part 2 in another dry spell!

I've never beaten Super Metroid, despite playing it multiple times on different platforms. I remember I watched a relative go through the ending at a party as a kid so maybe that killed my curiousity.

So I was the one saying this episode would be uninteresting... but credit where credit is due; while I would still describe it as fluff and I maintain that an in-depth discussion about a game would carry more value, I'll admit it was fun for what it was and the idea of trying to do some of these Patron submitted achievements could certainly be a laugh. Good job Damiani, L&R, Bynoe

This could easily be a standalone show! BTW I love the idea of winning a title to show on your Name. Like imagine to have those weird title on games not everyone plays, i dunno like Magician Lord or Minit.

Absolutely my fav episode of friend code. So good!

Ha, his heart remembered it but his mind didn't. His kidneys have it on the tip of their... tongues...

Samuel Cardwell

This was a fun episode good idea Damiani!

Damiani saying "My mind can't remember it exactly" is very funny to me. I feel like a monthly show where patrons submit some kind of challenges for the Allies to try each month would be kinda fun. Not sure how feasible it is though.

That thumbnail is bound to confuse some people on Youtube when they see it into thinking Nintendo has implemented achievements overnight. Anyways, I liked the user title idea for 100% achievements in a game, and I liked that show concept for coming up with achievements for each other to try and beat. Still not generally interested in achievements in games, unless the game progression is designed to dish out fun rewards for getting them like Into the Breach, where they count as points you spend to unlock new teams to play as. Agree with lots of stuff Kyle said about achievements usually forcing you to play a game a certain way or often spoiling the fun moments that do exist ahead of time. Like no matter how much of a clever joke or general fun thing an achievement is centered around, it'll never be as entertaining as just doing a cool thing or witnessing a fun moment in a game, then holding the screenshot button to save a video of it and showing that to your friends. The majority of the magical moments in Breath of the Wild can't be boiled down to an achievement, and that game would be actively worse if it funneled people to all play it certain same ways. Toadette's checklist in Odyssey wasn't fun, and it would've been even worse if every time you did something on it a box appeared to obscure the game with an accompanying sound to break your immersion. Is that nonsense really worth bragging rights to your friends? I get wanting to play games you already enjoy longer or accomplish the feeling of having seen everything there is worth seeing in a game, but I don't think a checklist of rewardless tasks triggering an overlay effect is the way to go about it.

Damn all my achievements either got eaten or snubbed

Steven Beaumont

I always thought that if Nintendo ever added an achievements-equivalent, they'd probably be called Missions (or maaaaaybe Medals). Also for those wondering what the story behind the "Darkest Timeline" Smash achievement was, it's based on the story for Fire Emblem Awakening, but don't look into it if you don't want spoilers!

Please more Xenoblade Chronicles. Loved 2! Less RNG and it's up there as one of my favorites.
