Starlink: Battle for Atlas - Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acjSDWTIXnw

Starlink's integration of the Starfox franchise might seem like as cheap of a gimmick, but does the collaboration between Ubisoft and Nintendo for the Swtich version pay off?

Many thanks to Brandon for staying up incredibly late to get this out just a few mins after embargo.

Starlink: Battle for Atlas - Review

Comments

Hey Damiani, I saw you getting some flack in the YT comments about the focus on Star Fox. As a huge Star Fox fan and as a person excited to pick up this game, I actually really appreciate your common perspective in this review. From one Star Fox fan to another, Thanks! Great review!

But would I like some Starlink with my Star Fox_

Gonzalo Ruiz

Jones said his big hands were hitting the bottom of the ship on the PS4 controller and annoying him, so he stopped playing with the ship on the controller after about an hour. Damiani also said he played physically with it for about an hour on Switch before doing the same. Luckily, you can play the whole thing digitally on both platforms without dealing with that aspect of the game at all.

Fantastic

Life is Strange 2?

Does anyone know what the game's like on PS4? even at EGX in UK i only managed to play the demo on switch and the JoyCon is a terrible controller lol

Worst than Star Fox Zero :P

I get a kick out of watching the allies generally shooting weapons and this video doesn't disappoint <3

Team Star Fox basically are the main characters of the Switch version. They're worked into all the cutscenes and the main story of the game, as well as having their own missions. It isn't some little side content. I agree the splitscreen coop could've used a mention, but I imagine it didn't get one, either because Damiani never played that way or had anything important to say about it other than that it exists. Likewise, the physical ships / toys are 100% optional, and Damiani mentioned on stream he played with one for about an hour before abandoning it completely to just play with everything digitally. Damiani's review reflects the way he chose to play Starlink as well as his experience with the Switch version of the game he played, but there are other outlets with other perspectives on the game if Damani's review didn't satisfy everything you wanted to know or you plan to get a different version of the game. That said, there's definitely a place for Damiani's review of the Switch version of Starlink, and there's for sure people who were interested to learn the depth of the Star Fox content in that particular version of the game.

Usually your reviews are pretty on point. Not too long, not too short and touching on all major points. This one though... I've got the feeling that I was watching a Star Fox review. It's okay to touch on the Switch exclusive content but this review consisted almost entirely of that exclusive content. Almost nothing about the main characters, nothing about the multiplayer, nothing about the physical ships/toys. It's 75% Star Fox and only 25% Starlink. Should be the other way around.

So I wasn't going to buy this game, but if you can play Star Fox throughout the whole game and I think of it as a Side-Star Fox game then im going to pick this up!

Was looking for this =) thanks for working so hard !

You can buy it physically or digitally. They mention it at the start of the review.

If argue if anything he's functioning properly critical for this game, whereas his love for Ghibli seemed to skew the Ni No Kuni 2 review to score way higher than it deserved given the wealth of universally agreed problems the game had such as inconsistent voiced dialogue and laughably, distractingly easy difficulty throughout.

MBUN

Yes, for the majority of our reviews, the background music is directly from the game. -Bloodworth

Is the music in the review from the game? Sounds good :)

Damiani can really frustrate me when he reviews Nintendo games- Is this a review of the game or a review on how well Starfox is implemented? He seems really fair and positive on non-Nintendo games (like Ni No Kuni 2) but then either overly harsh or super focused on one aspect of a game for Nintendo games. Love him so so much and I love friend code but I can kind of get a bit let-down when he's got a Nintendo game in his hands cos I just can't trust it anymore.

See You When I Get There

The thumbnail is Star Fox and the beginning of the review lists that it was reviewed for the Nintendo Switch, so it is indicated to the viewer what they're getting themselves into. Star Fox's inclusion was the big selling point for this game for many, given that Toys to Life genre is burning down and Nintendo's previous collab with Ubisoft worked out so well. Damiani simply reviewed the game for what attracted his interest to it in the first place, which is a valid perspective.

MBUN

There's other reviews from other outlets that will focus on that. Damiani decided to review the Switch version, which includes that content and is a big selling point to many people who otherwise wouldn't care about the game. It is fine for him to choose to review this way as the beginning of the review indicates he is reviewing the Nintendo Switch version and even the thumbnail implies the review will be heavily about Star Fox in Battle for Atlas.

MBUN

If this review was relabeled 'Starlink: Battle for Atlas Switch Review,' I think it's pretty solid. But it doesn't and reviewing this game from a perspective AS IF this was some sort of spiritual successor or evolution of Starfox is an injustice to the title. At the end of the review there's a wish for a dedicated Starfox game from the team and that's good and fine... but for THIS game it IS just side content and this reviews puts the Starfox stuff pretty much front and center.

Yes, you can. The game is available physically and digitally and you can earn all of the ships and weapons in the game itself. Buying the toys unlock them faster

Ruffum

I didnt catch if the review covered this but CAN YOU PLAY THROUGH THIS GAME WITHOUT BUYING ANY TOYS?

Danni-H4

This review shouldn't have focused heavily on the Star Fox content. It's optional content that's not available on the other platforms. How was the experience of vanilla Starlink?

Ruffum

Not terribly interested in the game but I appreciate both Damiani's perspective and the fact that the UI makes it look like you're watching Fox host a Twitch stream

What's a Swtich?
