Box Peek November Update
Added 2018-12-02 08:57:26 +0000 UTCHi everybody--I'll make this entry pretty quick since it hasn't been too long since you've last heard about Box Peek. Episode 6 is coming along super slowly, still in the drawing phase. We don't have to panic about til the December update.
For this month's Production Stuff notes, I'd like to talk about another aspect of Box Peek that was unexpectedly time-consuming: Sunday nights. In previous monthly updates, every time you heard me say an episode is done, that meant it was Pretty Much done. Every Sunday before a premiere I'd pop the project file open, give it a watch, and then disappointedly shake my head for twenty minutes straight. This was the start of the hours-long process of getting the episode into something I feel safe uploading to YouTube. (Jones helped set up the Ep 5 Q&A. He dragged the video file into XSplit and just said "dude--version EIGHT?") A good chunk of this process was applying audio techniques and sound effects I established in later episodes or just trying to keep everything visually unified. A couple of times the constant tinkering led to sleepy last-minute errors popping up (a typo in Ep 1 and Don's missed credit in Ep 2) but other times, it would be 4:30am, and for the first time in 40 viewings I realized that there's no indication Yinzer Poff's match began in the cold open, so like I gotta find an unused audio clip of Peekref 12 doing a countdown and just make it faintly audible in the distance. That kind of change is so stupid but also I would have hated the episode if I didn't catch that before it got out.
This post got long anyway. What I mean to extract from the editing-til-4am nights is that I'm probably never going to stop doing that, like I'll always want to make edits until the last possible moment, and so I'm just planning to account for that when wrapping an episode the first time though. Going forward, when an episode is Pretty Much done, that can mean Kind Of Done, since I know I'm going to put in hours the night before no matter what I do.
To everyone who's watched the show recently and encouraged me over the last year with every sad new post, thank you. Box Peek has been a grueling process for sure, and I'm well aware we're only halfway done, but it feels good to have gotten this far.
Thanks for your patience and support.
Love & Respect,
Kyle

2018-12-02 20:42:28 +0000 UTCKyle, I want you to stop hating on yourself so much for this project. You are creating something we all love and while you might not be able to meet some personal standards, we are all very happy with your work. I wish you would just take our word for it and be happy with yourself. Nothing about your posts are sad except the fact that you are way too hard on yourself. None of us want that man, please apply a little of that love and respect to yourself. Thanks for all the hard work Kyle and just know that as long as you are always open and honest with us, we will totally understand any adjustments of time or editing you have to do. Good luck man, enjoy your holidays and please stay positive. Much love and respect.

2018-12-02 20:27:48 +0000 UTCKyle I think you've got something real magical with this show so whatever you feel you gotta do to make it as perfect as possible , well you gotta do it right ? Anytime artwork is involved , personal satisfaction takes a front row seat. Don't feel bad about doing a special directors cut video down the road either if you still miss something along the way. You're mostly a one man army making this show. Looking forward to seeing the next season of episodes down the road , take your time with it and stay healthy !

2018-12-02 14:28:48 +0000 UTCAn artist is never finished. It's important to have someone you trust tell you it's done and good, don't be afraid to outsource work or supervision to others. Don't stress yourself over this no one in this community wants you to hurt yourself for us. Boxpeek is great but it doesn't need to be flawless.
2018-12-02 14:10:54 +0000 UTCVery proud of your hard work. This show has flipped ma lid like crazy.

2018-12-02 09:56:35 +0000 UTCAs I understand it George R.R. Martin goes through something similar, hence the years between books. I'm happy being patient for him, I'm more than happy being patient for you and something as amazing and uplifting as Box Peak. Thank you for creating it! L&R

2018-12-02 09:52:52 +0000 UTCBox Peek is really something special. I absolutely adored Season 1, and I’ll wait as long as it takes for Season 2. Keep up the excellent work!
2018-12-02 09:43:28 +0000 UTCI think the first half of Box Peek season 1 proved that it's well worth the wait, the last thing anyone wants is for it to be rushed, forced or for you to release anything you're not happy with! I hope I speak for all the allies when I say we don't want to watch something you've had to churn out; we love to watch things that you love too, which I think sums up the whole channel to me.

2018-12-02 09:29:16 +0000 UTCYou’re doing it man. As an audio engineer working in film, and a music producer and songwriter on the side, I can totally relate. This is how creative stuff seems to work sadly. It’s just part of it. What matters is you are finishing things! That’s the most important part. You aren’t letting your projects get stuck in an infinite loop of, “oh man... this isn’t perfect yet. I’ll just keep tweaking it till it is.” That’s how art never gets shown to the public. Things are never perfect. Think of your favorite artist... You already know there are things that person hates and wishes they could change about even their most successful piece of work. You know you’re in good shape when, even though a couple tiny things inevitably slipped through the cracks in the rush to release, your art still turned out great. Box Peek is just that... Great. I’m sure you already know there will always be things you’ll look back on and wish you could change. Even in Box Peek, Episode 36. But as a fellow creative, sometimes I just need to be reminded to not only try and be more comfortable letting things go when it’s time, but to also understand that perfection doesn’t exist. You’re doing your best and it’s paying off. Keep focusing on that. Just popped Box Peek on during a break in the room with another member of my post-production team: he was laughing his ass off. Keep up the great work! And now... back to also staying up till 4am trying to desperately make projects as good as they can be before ‘shipping.’ Keep burning that midnight oil, dude.
2018-12-02 09:25:14 +0000 UTCThank for all of this Kyle. We appreciate all of your blood, sweat and tears that have gone into this.
2018-12-02 09:03:47 +0000 UTCYou’re always you’re own harshest critic! We absolutely love the series. It’s far beyond what I expected; you are incredibly creative and talented. Love and Respect!
